Bakers & Larners is a huge (for a town, anyway) upmarket department store with a great range of…read moregoods. It is located in the town centre of Holt in an impressive building dating back to the 1630's. I love the food hall because it has so much to offer - it has your typical range of staple foods from great brands but also offers fancier and more specialist foods. There is a dedicated section for health foods; vitamins, specialist diet foods (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, etc.), a wonderful deli counter with a wide selection of fresh foods, a good range of teas, wines, coffees, organic food, baking produce. The list is huge! They're also very competitively priced. Other sections of the store include; homewares (a very large selection of kitchen goods, electrical appliances, lighting & decorative items), household goods (which stocks bulk products such as Ecover!), perfumes, make up & beauty, womenswear, underwear, menswear, a book store and a cafe. I believe they also stock building supplies (as Bakers is a builders merchants) but I have never had to use that so I cannot really comment! It is well laid out with two main front entrances - one dedicated to the groceries and the other in the homeware. I believe there is also a back entrance for the building department with access to a car park but we are usually on foot! Each department has it's own section with it's own counter & staff so most of the time you don't have to queue, and when you do it is not for long (unless it is the height of tourist season, when naturally most shops become a bit overwhelmed!) It is much nicer than visiting department stores in the city, and Holt is such a beautiful town!

It's ponsy and snobby, but you just have to love it. A real quality act, the range cookers are to…read moredie for. Great furniture department (further down the road) real old fashioned service. Foodhall as other reviewers have said is a mini Harrods ...go

It's not made here, it's par-baked and frozen, shipped to this shop, where they bake it and sell it as needed. Sort of like that Frenchy fancy shop around the corner from the Church. I guess fancy cheese needs fancy bread. The white one was pretty good. Excellent crunch, crusty exterior, uniform though chewy and pliable holes. I also bought cheese here on 2 occasions. The first time, I didn't get to eat any of it since Papa Smurf ate it all while I was out. It was some really lovely looking gorgonzola dolce, blue, runny, delicious. But, the lad helping me cut a slice from the wheel, then let the delicious center portion FALL OUT. Obviously, these people are NOT french. Oh, and Papa Smurf cuts the nose off the cheese. Always. Cuts the nose off the frakking cheese. The second time I bought cheese here, there were 3 types. Again, some gorgonzola dolce, and a bigger portion! I asked the shopgirl to scoop up the runny tasty lovely middle portion. Maybe the English don't like the middle runny portion? Maybe they can't taste the difference? Could I have asked to have 250 grams, JUST FROM THE CENTER? Cheese was very good. The shop is quite famous in England because of television attention and celebrity chefs. They don't carry Lincolnshire Poacher unless it's actually made in Lincolnshire. Such staunch Geographic Protection of Origin. Single tear. Sigh.

There are a fantastic range of cheeses of all types in this traditional market town shop. Organic, soft, hard, smelly, flavoured, smoked just about anything you can think of and more! The prices are also very good for what they are selling and compare well with supermarket prices - especially considering that there are a lot of cheeses that you won't find in any supermarkets. The service is superb and again its an independent business!!
