Have you noticed recently all those adverts on TV offering to buy your gold if you send it to them?…read moreApparently the value of gold has soared in the last year or so and everyone is cashing in their sovereigns and hoops. I came to May's to do that, and got a rather reasonable £60 for something I never would have worn again. If you're really desperate, you can pawn something you DO want back on the premise that they'll loan you the amount it's worth. They'll keep the item for up to 7 months, although I don't like the idea of not being able to keep up with the repayments (plus their interest) and losing that cherished heirloom forever... There's loads of great deals on second hand and new jewellery too, with diamond rings starting as little as £50 and continuing upwards of £2,000 but when I look at some pieces I can't help wondering whether the previous owners were unlucky or willing sellers.

So whilst she sorted out the nitty gritty financial details with the proprietor, myself and some old biddies (for these are the customers it seems of The Village Jewellers) browsed the sensible, elegant pieces on display. I overheard one old lady talking about which bracelet she would get for her grand-daughter and hopefully the one she picked out wouldn't be flung to the back of a drawer. Most of the silver and pendants in here are too delicate to be 'fashion' and would get lost in most young outfits. But for ze older lady, as I shall put it, there is much to love here. Nothing extravagant, no giant chokers or anything crazy - just good craftsmanship and the tender loving care of the owners.

We found a beautiful, unique pre-owned gold charm at the oldest jewelers in the UK (Parsons in Bristol) a few years ago. So of course we had to look here too and success! In this lovely old (122 years) store right in the center of Manchester she found another unique piece. I was told the stone was glass and chipped and it would be melted down for the gold. The bracelet was sold for £165. Thinking i was being dealt with fairly and thinking that the company had integrity i sold the items. Imagine how disappointed i was when i looked in the window a couple of weeks later and saw the ring priced at £295 and the bracelet priced at £895. I went into the shop and questioned the extortionate price increase. No reasonable explanation was given. The manager offered to sell me back the two items which i was willing to do but when he pulled the receipt out he hadn't itemised the pieces sold and would only sell for £450. I was unwilling to do this as it would have meant the giving the other items away for nothing. Was the reciept deliberately vague to counter complaints such as mine? Makes me wonder. I feel as if i have been dealt with in a very underhand manner. I'd never really understood the meaning of daylight robbery before. I do now! I would advise anyone from buying or selling from Arthur Kay. They lack integrity and decency and you'd be better going elsewhere. I expected more from an established family company. Shame on you!
