But nothing beats the customer service at Bridgetown. They are worth the extra drive. They don't just take care of your vehicles, they take care of their customers. Our most recent visit was exceptional. During a routine maintenance visit, they discovered a mold problem in our car. Instead of charging us for the extra work, they took care of the problem for free. They were more concerned about our health than making extra money.

Was told the lower control arms would need to be replaced at a cost of $2.2k before they could align it. Said no thanks and took it to another shop who aligned it with no issues. The other shop said the lower control arms were getting worn, but weren't damaged and would not be an issue for alignment. Bridgetown also did an inspection that wasn't requested and listed over a dozen issues they said needed to be done including replacing spark plugs that had been replaced 2 weeks prior along with other parts replaced in the previous year that were perfectly fine. They also said the air filter needed to be replaced, it didn't, and didn't even reinstall it properly. Big gap where it was sucking in dirty air on the side without going through the air filter. I was pretty shocked they couldn't even put an air filter in correctly and they were trying to get me to pay thousands for unneeded work. Still ripping people off after all these years. There are many other better, honest shops. Response: Nice try, but the shop that did the alignment is a reputable shop and said the control arms were worn, but did not need to be replaced for an alignment. I have a picture of the air filter taken out of the air box, so you would have had to put it back in and you recommended replacing it. It seems disingenuous to recommend replacing spark plugs without even checking them. How many people just go with your recommendations that are not validated and pay for unneeded work? I cannot in good faith recommend your shop based on my experience and the other 1 star responses. Focus on providing good, honest, customer service and you will make more money and be able to sleep at night.

Since the Air-cooled era is past, their business is centered on water-cooled engines, primarily the 4-cylinder 2.1 liter "water-boxer", in VW Vanagons. The mechanics in the shop are all VW Professionals and can handle any kind of repair your Vanagon may require. They can do all the usual "upgrades" you may want and at very reasonable costs. Tom is a straight-ahead, no BS, VW owner, who has driven these cars for decades. He knows the proper "fix" and sees that it is done right. They are honest and fair. You will not find a better Vanagon-specific shop in Oregon or Washington. Don't go anywhere else. On this review site there are posts by several unhappy VW owners, who have not received the courtesy and respect they demand. This is very likely possible and unfortunate. Customers are fickle in how they want to be treated by automotive service shop owners and the front-office staff of these businesses. When a person has as much experience as Tom, sometimes patience is thin in dealing with whining customers. Keep in-mind he has earned the right to be a true curmudgeon (70 years of repairing VW's) and couple this with numerous health issues that keep him home-bound make for good days and not-so-good days. The vehicle was kept for over four weeks, the final bill was about 40% higher than the estimate, and it was returned with missing parts.
