I've got a smile on my face just writing about it! The selection of ales was a relatively familiar one, with a tasty exception in Golden Pippen, delicious. They had 5 others, including a couple that have to be brought up from the cellar in a jug (a few places locally do this and boast of doing this..not quite sure why it is such a big deal). Was surprised and happy to see Dark Star Hophead so far from home too. Quite a bit of food choice, including a selection of pies. I braved the game pie as it contained venison and pheasant, neither of which I had previously sampled. This was nice too. The pub really can do no wrong! It was seriously difficult tearing myself away from the Hollybush, to try some other local pubs.

The fairly cluttered layout identifies it as a historic pub, there are several designated areas so it won't get *too* loud even when busy [which it mostly is in the evenings]. Good food, wide variety of real ales and ciders on tap (large rather than particularly distinguished on my visit), good atmosphere. It's a 10 minute walk from the nearest bus station in Milford, a little remote and easy to miss (God bless Google Maps!). Very popular with the locals. There are several good pubs within a short radius (this one, the Strutt-on-Arms & the King Williams IV). Get a zig-zag ticket on the Sixes buses from Derby so you can hop on and off at the various stops of your crawl.

It is friendly and spacious with good seating set ups. I been several times in a group of ten or more people, and the food has always been excellent. The service is bordering on slow, but I believe this is due to the number of people in the group. The prices are very reasonable, and gives excellent value for money. There is a large outdoor area with a play area for the children. There is also outdoor seating. The staff are friendly and helpful. I think the only downside is the ordering system, you have to order at the bar, and this is difficult when in a large party.

On Boxing Day lunch time I had the special which was roast beef with mash and veg. I want it all over again as I type this. The meat was just outstanding. I also had parsnip soup to start. The soup was so good that I had it again when I returned later in the week. At lunch time again that week I had the traditional favourite sausage and mash. Wow. Just wow. Yummy sausages, creamy mash and crisp green peas. It doesn't get any more home cooked than that. A good selection of beer on tap including my favourite Peroni. There's plenty of parking, an outdoor play area for kids and the staff are always pleasant. This is a place I would return to again and again.

It was humiliating and made us feel like criminal scammers. Completely shocked by this we immediately paid for them. Fortune later we were able to prove with internet banking that we had in fact already paid for them the e yea payment was refunded . There was no apology, explanation or complimentary drink. If you order food here get a receipt and keep it. Nice pub, nice customers, shame about the unprofessional snap wrong decision of those running it. CUSTOMERS BEWARE, we didn't see this coming.

They really have two menu offerings. The first is your standard chain pub grub, all pies, burgers and pasta. The second, and what probably draws the majority of visitors is the buffet. Each night of the week has a different theme, in no particular order, Mexican, Italian, Burgers, Indian, Chip Shop, Chicken and Carvery. The prices vary depending on the night, but are generally less than a tenner for person. We were in on a Friday, so got the Chip Shop night. The buffet has a reasonable variety of food, at a reasonable level. Don't go expecting anything brilliant, but what they do have is good and you get plenty of it. On offer the night we went was; Fish, Chips, Battered Sausage, Fish Cakes, Pies, Cod Bites, Chicken and Mushy Peas, all served with gravy, curry sauce and Bread and Butter. Great for a chip sandwich. Soft drinks are on an all you can drink whichever menu you go for. All in all, if you're looking for a quick, filling and well priced meal, then pop on in.

To have to stand and wait in a que for a carvery for 50 minutes to then be watched like a hawk because they needed the table. The whole time we waited and ate the manager kept barking orders to the wait staff to make sure our table didn't over run on time and to clear the table the second "IT" was done. It took 8 seconds (yes, I counted) from the last fork of food to go in my mouth, not even swallowed and the plates being taken away. When we complained we was spoken to like children, and the manager tried to make out we was imaging it. The condescending tone and fake smile with too much teeth made my skin crawl. Just an apology and recognition that they had made the meal unbearable is all that was needed. Been going here for years but never again, keep up the terrible service and hopefully it will change hands again soon then I can go back.
