All home cooked food, quickly prepared and brought to your table. There is a menu of light meals but more substantial offerings are on a blackboard above the bar, such as: roast pork with vegetables, Boeuf Bourguignon with vegetables or cauli/broccoli cheese crumble with/without new potatoes to name a few. There's also a special puddings menu. Delicious coffee is served with Pringle type mint chocolates. Prices are very reasonable. Upstairs is a complete surprise, with lots of comfy chairs and books to browse. This floor leads onto a large decked, roofed area which would be ideal in the summer of a leisurely evening drink. The loos are great too! Well behaved dogs allowed and are even given a few chews as a reward. Highly recommended.

We had a carvery which was £8.95 a head but plenty of it. Plenty of other choices all in a similar price bracket but also jacket potatoes and baguettes. It had a good choice of wine by the glass. The toilets were spotless and had a beautiful orchid in them. There is a large car park and also some tables outside. After lunch we walked a circular route for about 50mins, partly along the river to help our food go down. Staff were very friendly.

This is a typical member of the Yates chain and offers nothing unexpected. Quite a pleasant bar when the town is quiet, it offers drinks at average prices and food which is of average quality. It can offer quite a pleasant adult evening out. However at weekends and in the holiday season, it gets very crowded and is one of the main stops on the stag and hen pub crawls and therefore you can imagine how it gets - with drunks staggering around and people falling over. Best avoided on those occasions, but if you time it well, worth a visit.

We ate as a large group on a Friday evening when the pub was generally full of people on nights out. As a place to eat I would suggest that the cow is better placed as somewhere for lunch, not dinner and especially not dinner on a Friday night. My starter of black pudding with bubble and squeak bacon and a poached egg was delicious. However my main course of fish pie was poorly presented and the accompanying vegetables were soft and the portion was small. The pie itself was tasty but the whole experience was let down by the poor presentation. The meals of others in my party looked good, especially burgers and steaks - if I go back I'll be sticking to those.

I was taken there by a customer of mine for a quick lunch , but there is clearly a full restaurant menu as well as lunchtime bar food. I had (on his recommendation) a Peking duck tortilla wrap with spring onions and hoisin sauce, came with chips and salad. Delicious. A good pint of Ringwood bitter washed it down. Staff were polite and attentive, nothing too much trouble. The pub is tastefully fitted out, if rather a mixture of old and new. It was fairly quiet when we called, but it really does deserve more custom. Highly recommended. Edit 5/10/11 Had another lunch here, still excellent and very recommendable

It was a very busy Thursday night, with a pub quiz going on, some of the locals were pleasant enough, but we did experience some hostility from what appeared to be a few very inebriated fold. In fairness, partner's lasagne was described as "best pub lasagne I've ever had". The steak, chips & trimmings all tasted tainted/slightly ? metallic so perhaps they were using stale old oil/dont ever clean the equipment: who knows. I didnt finish the meal as I was worried (justifably as it turned out) about consequences.
