Specialties
The Game Academy empowers learners to achieve social, emotional and academic success through our use of role-playing games in educational contexts.
We engage imaginations with interactive games wherein communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking are the keys to unlocking adventures in learning. Our curriculum is designed to help them make enduring connections between what they know, what they are learning, and what is possible.
Most importantly, our games are designed to be FUN!
The Game Academy provides an engaging and enriching way for children to play in a structured, creative environment. We craft inspiring, immersive game-experiences that translate into powerful tools of reflection for understanding the world and the self.
History
Established in 2016.
We began our work as a for-profit named Iocari Games, educating children through role-playing games since 2011. This year, we launched as a 501(c)3 in order to reach a broader audience of children, including at-risk and disadvantaged youth.
Meet the Business Owner: Joshua A.
Joshua Archer is the Executive Director of The Game Academy, and is following his dream of expanding the horizons of interactive storytelling experiences which engage, educate and motivate. Initially studying math and physics, he received his BA in Philosophy from UC Berkeley in 1994. He has been a Software Engineer, an Educator, ran a Web Design company, and is the founder of Iocari Games, which designs Educational Role Playing Games.
Joshua has been involved with many children's educational enrichment programs over the past dozen years using integrative learning opportunities that engage both sides of the brain. When Joshua isn't improving and extending the work of Iocari and The Game Academy, he can be found working on his Master of Arts degree in Education at Sonoma State University, beekeeping, making cheese, playing music, practicing stage combat, and, of course, gaming across the Bay Area.
