Officially known as the Brisbane Cricket Ground, I find The Gabba a bit underwhelming. It serves a great purpose, being the home ground of the Brisbane Lions and Queensland Cricket, as well as hosting many other sporting and business events. It's even been upgraded in the last decade, making the stadium an enclosed ring (cricket purists complain that this has stopped the afternoon breeze, that came through the old members stand, assisting bowlers). But in comparison to the other major stadiums in Queensland, I find The Gabba older, dirtier, and possibly the worst venue for viewing for the crowd.
The Gabba trails venues such as Suncorp Stadium, Skilled Park and Metricon Stadium in most categories. Whilst I won't compare any of the food or drinks (all awful, in all stadiums), I do find the Gabba much harder to access by public transport. Attendees of any game at the Gabba know how annoying it is trying to cross any of Stanley, Vulture or Main Streets in order to get to the ground. The other stadiums in comparison have public transport that will almost drop you at the front door.
Those unfortunate enough to have a ticket for the rows right at the back of the top tier of stands almost need to have a binocular with them constantly. Seeing the small red cricket ball can almost be impossible. Conversely, those who sit at the back rows of the lower tier have no chance of seeing anything that happens at the opposite end of the field in an AFL match.
I do acknowledge that The Gabba is older than the Metricon Stadium, Skilled Park and the newly rebuilt Suncorp Stadium, but I imagine it's only a small amount of time before another stadium is built to house Brisbane's AFL and Cricket associations. read more
