My main experience of the Fruitmarket Gallery is the cafe. My Granny loves this place and often takes me out for lunch here when she is visiting. There was one time I was horrendously hungover and I still managed to eat here, so there is a plus point- the food is edible while hungover! Aside from that, the food is delicious when you are feeling 100% also. You will generally find at lunch time that this place is packed, I think due to the fact that it is a reasonably priced cafe in the city centre which is 1. Not a chain 2. Has an interesting menu 3. Serves delicious food. Also it has the added bonus of the gallery, but more about that later. The food here is so fresh and you can tell there is a huge amount of effort put into producing and serving it. The menu has a range of soups, salads and rolls as well as the specials on the board. I had a superb squash curry in here, and it seemed like everyone around me had gone for the same idea. The soup is also scrumptious and the rolls are a far cry from ham and cheese or tuna, instead fillings include smoked trout and lemon chicken. The gallery is wonderfully light and airy with some interesting exhibitions which are free to get into. They also have a lovely shop which has a huge variety of books which will interest young and old. The Fruitmarket Gallery is great for a nice lunch, then an hour or so wandering around the gallery and the shop.

The Fruitmarket Gallery is a shiny, salmon coloured contemporary exhibition space in the heart of Edinburgh. Showcasing the work of modern artists from all corners of the globe, the Fruitmarket is very much for art enthusiasts. It's free though, so people passively interested in art have the opportunity to gander and possibly discover new art they enjoy. There is normally only one exhibition on in the Fruitmarket Gallery at a time. This is great for avid fans of the showcased artist, but it means there's no room for variation. Saying that, since the Fruitmarket Gallery only exhibits these artists for a short period of time, it's not long before another extensive exhibition appears. Every visit will be different from the next, and usually the kind of art broadcast in here is interactive, intelligent and thought provoking. Not one for the kids but there is a fair amount of space for adults to enjoy. I have yet to sample what sounds like a lovely little cafe, but I noticed it was spacious and a good place to pop into if you're wanting to get a bit of downtime (I can imagine students may come here to study since it's a peaceful environment.) The Fruitmarket Gallery also plays host to a fantastic bookshop, full of books concerned with visual imagery and anthologies on contemporary art (handy for arts students!) From photography to film, the Fruitmarket is a great space to discover and appreciate highly acclaimed modern art.

Loved the Tania Kovats exhibition, is an excellent space. I was expecting it to be a significantly larger venue but was nice little gallery. Perfect for a quick modern art fix.

This art gallery is a nice tourist attraction, and a refreshing wee change if you have shopped your face off all day. I had a coffee in the lovely cafe which was nice and very reasonably priced, not to mention packed! I have heard that the peak time in here is lunch which isn't surprising as it is homecooked food at great prices. The art gallery itself is very modern, and although I don't know much about art, I know what I like. No dusty old paintings in here, and the exhibits change often which keeps it fresh. Another great gallery which is often overlooked because of its location.

It…read moreseems that these retro sweet shops are becoming a growing trend and seem to be popping up all over the place. Lickety Splits definitely has a lot more character than most and if it's wedding favours, gifts, childrens party bags or just some sweets for yourself you don't have to look any further. It's a really nice idea for wedding favours and all you need to do is choose what kind of sweets it is you're after and Lickety Splits will gift wrap everything into little favours, very cute. The decor is gorgeous with wooden flooring, quirky tables and polka dot patterns, it's very bright and airy and all the sweets are organised in glass tubs on fresh white painted shelves. My favourite sweeties have to be the little chocolate cups they're so addictive and moreish. I only found out about this place last week but I think I'll be popping in quite a bit now I know it's there, I could go for some fried eggs just now actually.

Stopped at this shop as part of the Chocolate Tour of Edinburgh. It's a fab mix between an…read moreauthentic wee sweetie shop, a gallery and a gift shop. The lady in the shop was very knowledgable about her stock. She was able to match people with their local sweets and talk a lot about the changes sweets have gone through over the years (no more cocaine on our sweeties!!). The gallery/gift shop area was a nice little browse too. The shop is very small so our group of 10 was a bit squashed when some other shoppers arrived. The shop is dog friendly and had some water and food outside for any visiting pooches!

I'm a huge museum geek. I go to the museum as often as possible in whatever city I'm in. This visit…read morewas many years ago (should have written a review a long time ago). I spent almost a month in Scotland for a milestone birthday and it was a truly wonderful experience. Most of the museums are free which I definitely wasn't used to being from San Diego; none of ours are. We walked through the national mall and I was in awe. The history of the buildings in the mall were older than the United States which is crazy. As we entered we were greeted by several extremely friendly employees including the security guard. I stopped at the information desk to ask questions and get a map. Then we set off through the rooms and floors. Most art was centuries ago was religious themed which I had forgotten, walking through the museum I was floored at the detail and the preservation of the pieces. My friend who accompanied me was not a museum person but he too got caught up in the sheer beauty of it all. I'm excited to return to Edinburgh in 2026 and I will absolutely be spending another full day here.

The building we walked into was impressive itself but they were in the middle of changing exhibits upstairs so we were limited to the main floor. After being a little disappointed at the lack of art on display, we learned we were in Modern Two and there was a whole other building across the street - Modern One! It was nearly closing time so we quickly made our way over there. We were very happy to see the variety and quantity of works on display! I loved seeing an Edvard Munch lithograph, a colorful David Hockney acrylic, a Picasso - and many more interesting works by new-to-me artists! I hope to get back here again when I have more time to explore!
