Awesome food and service. We have gone for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. As well as other times of the day.

I found myself up in Sioux Center for work yesterday and as a group we were going to the fruited plain. I had never heard of this location, but they assured me that I was going to enjoy it. From the outside, it just looks like an older brick storefront on their main street, but once inside, it has such a cute eclectic coffee shop vibe that is putting out really good food in addition to coffee. There were a number of different nooks to enjoy coffee and conversation in private, a fairly large dining area, and a separate room that I imagine could be used for a large group or just spill over for the lunch service. I opted for their Panini that had ham, brie, and apple with a cup of tomato bisque. My colleague got the curried chicken salad on croissant (both our sandwiches were the half size!) with a cup of potato and carrot soup. A couple of the people we were with got their flatbread pizzas, which also sounded and looked delicious. Excellent coffee shop with good food offerings. The feeling and ambiance of the place is chill and cozy. They have a kids corner and dart board with a small bar area as well. Great coffee, homemade bagels, pastries, flatbreads, soups and paninis. Prices are very reasonable and staff is great! They also have a small beer and wine selection as well as selling local cream, milk and cheeses. Definitely worth a visit! read more

We were in town to visit our nephew at Dordt. So glad we decided on lunch at The Fruited Plain Cafe. My husband had the soup and croissant special and a coffee. My nephew had the pepperoni flatbread and I had the artichoke flatbread. Everything was delicious! We will definitely be back when in Sioux Center! read more

It was a cold, dark, chilly November evening in the city of Sioux Center, Iowa (Pop of at least 300). My good friend, a person I would consider a brother, inquired at around 9 PM (Central Time of course) about a possible location to lock in on his rigorous academic obligations. After pondering for a quality seven minutes, an answer, no...a revelation, came to me. The Fruited Plain Cafe. Despite its title, the Fruited Plain Cafe is anything but plain. As is tradition, we arrived at the Fruited Plain Cafe around 8:00 pm in the evening (Eastern Time of course). At approximately 9:45 in the evening (Central Time), I ordered a glass of wine. It was delivered promptly by Ms. Morgan and her contemporary was very supportive of the late hour transaction. You see, Apple Maps displayed the Fruited Plain Cafe®, as closing at 10 pm (central time). Ms. Morgan went above and beyond in her workplace endeavors by providing service despite our misunderstanding that this accredited establishment had actually closed forty-three minutes prior. Folks...you simply will not come across the service Ms. Morgan provided this evening anywhere. Ms. Morgan most definitely brought "Midwestern Hospitality" to fruition and I will most definitely be informing my extended family about this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I am very critical of establishments and my only complaint towards the Fruited Plain Cafe was that one of the chairs was tilted at an acute angle and I am much more of an obtuse angle kind of individual. read more

Wow. Just wow. Where did this place come from? Disclaimer: I am a Chicago resident now, but I spent 5 years in Sioux Center. On a visit, I dropped by a few times, and was blown away. It's a coffee shop, cafe, wine bar, and bakery/bistro. Wine from all corners of the planet, great beer you won't find at Hy-Vee, delicious fair-trade coffee, lovely wood tones, rugs, and artwork, AND genuinely delicious, lovingly-prepared food. I sampled everything I could, I and don't say this lightly: I enjoyed everything I had. Sound pretentious? Nope. There's a little play area for the kids, all your cafe favorites, and an unassuming, laid-back staff. read more

I did not expect a place like this in a town that smells like...let's just say it smells like "fertilizer." Unfortunately, we arrived too late to get a real lunch here, but they did have flatbread pizzas and soups still available. On the suggestion of the waitress/chick behind the bar, we ordered a big bowl of the tomato bisque (served with their homemade sourdough bread) and a deluxe flat bread pizza. The tomato bisque was A-MA-ZING. And the bread was spectacular. I could have eaten two bowls of the stuff. It was filling, creamy, thick, tasty, not too salty...I would make the trip back to Sioux Center just for this soup and bread. The bread had a nice crust, but not too thick, and the inside was light and spongy. It really rocked my world. The pizza was a bit of a dissapointment after the soup. My SO really liked the dough of the flatbread, and he said it tasted homemade. It wasn't that big for the price, and had hardly any tomato sauce on it. I think there might have been fresh tomatoes, but I'm a bit of a sucker for a traditional-type pizza. The cheese was nice (I remember it being big slices of fresh mozzarella), but the toppings weren't spread out enough for you to get all the toppings on one piece. I think I felt particularly picky that day, so perhaps I'm ragging on their pizza too much. I didn't look around at anything else they had, but they did seem to have quite a few bottles of wine and other "fair-tradey" coffee/cafe type things - reusable this, and reusable that. If their paninis are served on their homemade bread, then I would not hesitate to come back here again! read more

I visit the Fruited Plain quite often and love everything from a plain latte to muffins to pizza. You can't go wrong! Super good!

I came here while visiting my brother who goes to college nearby. Being a born and raised California girl, this small-town had some special things I was not expecting to see or find and this restaurant was one of them. Their assortment of wines looked impressive (I tried a Riesling that was pretty good). It seemed like they don't keep all of the whites chilled, so there was a wait for the wine I selected--not too long though. They had beer too--duh, it's Iowa. Pizza was GREAT! I love me some thin crust (doesn't make me feel so guilty for eating several pieces at a time :)). The margarita was my fave. Garlic, tomato, cheese, a little spice of this and a little shake of that---mmmmm so good! It's atmosphere has a rustic, hip feel to it. Rather than being a sit down, you order like you would at a coffee shop and they bring your food out when it's completed. I liked seeing all the families eating and praying together, it made it feel like a wholesome, hearty place to be. I definitely plan to come back here when I visit again. read more

I really enjoyed this place! My parents recently moved to Sioux Center and when we went and visited I was in every day! Coffee is delicious and decently priced. They have plenty of flavors and use local coffee (and milk?). They also have wine and beer to enjoy in their rustic atmosphere- or to pack up and take home. I loooved my lunch shared with my family: house salad, baguette with balsamic, and an avocado bacon egg salad sandwich. The house salad has goat cheese, yum!! We also tried the artichoke flatbread, delicious. The service was good! They have a drive up window also. Such a great place to meet up with some friends or have a peaceful study sesh. read more

To start out, their customer service is okay. I'm not too worried about that, I come for the food. The food was pretty good-- I had the tomato bisque. GREAT flavor, however, it was warm at best. I loved my panini that came with it though. It was fantastic. However, for a cafe that was not too busy, it took an excessively long time to get the food. Stayed in town for two weeks and could not get enough of this place. The sandwich specials were always on point and the hummus plate was a pleasant surprise with a nice array of fresh vegetables. But where this place really stands out is their tomato bisque. Being totally honest here, I have considered flying across the country again just for that bisque. The Fruited Plain has a cute, semi-hipster interior, decorated with church pews and couches. And the wifi is free and quick. However, those are the only good things about this cafe. The bathroom is buzzing with mosquitoes and the cafe has flies buzzing around the food. The chai latte I got was watery/not flavorful, and the small mug it came in was absolutely not worth the $3+. My water also had questionable, little black specks in it. Disappointed - I think the place has great potential but falls short. read more

So I'm good friends with the owners...so take my word or leave it. But if you are looking for a wonderful spot in this part of the country to eat, drink, hear music, and just generally be happy. THIS IS IT! Laremy and Becca are amazing people and will treat you well. Not too mention they are amazing cooks and I hear their chef on the weekend is not to be missed. Check this place out. I'm really not sure what the rave is about this place. The first time I went in there, the place was filled with flies. I couldn't sit in peace because I was too busy swatting the flies away. A friend and I placed an order and waited about 30 minutes. People who ordered after us were getting their food so I went and politely asked if ours would be ready soon. Turns out, they forgot to put our order in. We told them our order again and waited 15-20 minutes. Then they came back and said they don't have what we ordered. What a pain! We chose something else and it finally came out after 10 minutes but we were so frustrated at that point. I gave them another chance months later and although my second experience wasn't nearly as bad, I still wasn't impressed with the quality of the food. It tasted and appeared pre packaged and like they just popped it in the microwave. It's not worth my time or money to go back. read more

I live & die for the tomato bisque. The menu overall is a good mix & everything I've tried (& I've tried my share of menu items) has been amazing! The employees are really nice & accomodating, especially the owner(?) The cheese plate could use some more bread, lol. Good wine & beer selection, great atmosphere. I seriously love this place! I stop by anytime that I'm in Sioux Center. It's a great place to work quietly or sit and chat with friends.

Best around here, especially for those that don't want to eat burgers and steaks at every meal. Hummus plate is pretty big. And the squash soup was so good. There is a large wine and beer selection. Service is so so and menu is very limited in the evening. read more

This place appeared to be a refuge from fast foodland. We passed it by(even though we were actually searching for it), thinking it was closed. We arrived around 6, super hungry and looking forward to soups, salads and flatbreads that the other reviews raved about. But alas, no soups or salads were being served on a Tuesday evening. There wasn't an explanation as to why. Disappointed with our choices reduced, we ordered flatbread and artichoke dip. It is a very eclectic place, almost not knowing what it wants to be when it grows up. Lots of wine choices and a few beers, but the place was very coffeeshopish with clutches of students from Dordt on laptaps drinking from mugs. There was a kiddie corner with toys thrown around. We were the only non-student looking people in the place. Bottom line: flatbread and artichoke dip were good, still glad I ate there instead of Carls Jr, but maybe phone ahead to see when all the food items are available. read more

This is my favorite place to go. My daughter and I go every Saturday after violin class! She love the smoothies, I love the hot drinks. We have eaten meals here and have never been disappointed.
