A couple of years ago, while visiting family in Alberta, I stopped into a Liquor Depot in Edmonton…read moreto buy some wine. At the checkout, the POS terminal crashed mid-transaction. The clerk apologized and re-entered the transaction. It went through the second time. But I kept both receipts, just in case. Sure enough, when I got my MasterCard statement a few weeks later, I was billed for both transactions. Now back at home in Coquitlam, I sent an email to the manager at the Liquor Depot in Edmonton where I had shopped a few weeks earlier. I scanned and sent a copy of both receipts and my MasterCard statement. He replied within hours, apologizing again, and advising me that if I went to the nearby Coquitlam Liquor Depot location on Barnet Highway, I could get the refund processed on my MasterCard. So I went down there the next day. It was the first time I had ever walked into the place. As was I explaining the situation, the clerk politely interrupted me and said they were already expecting me. She again apologized for the bother, and processed the refund at once. What had just happened? Frankly, this level of customer service completely floored me! That was my "introduction" to the Liquor Depot on Barnet. I've since become a regular. The customer service has consistently been friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful without being pushy. Just one example: this past summer, we bought several bottles of an inexpensive table wine from the Okanagan. Two weeks ago, I had the idea to buy some more, but couldn't remember the name of the wine. Well, all I had to do was give the clerk a rough approximation of what I thought I remembered the name of the vineyard was, and she said, "Oh, yes, you mean this one right here...." Excellent service, but also very good prices, comparable to BC Liquor Store prices, and sometimes even lower when they have a promotion. Definitely better prices overall than other private liquor stores I've shopped. The general selection of wines is good, though not great (I focus on wines only because we don't drink a lot of beer or spirits). A lot of the same labels you see at BC Liquor Stores, but several others you don't, including one of our very favourite Oliver vineyards, Silver Sage (although, regrettably, a very limited selection from this wonderful winery). Parking isn't the greatest at this location, but I don't mind. We shop here regularly--definitely our favourite private liquor store!

I have to say one thing just to get to the point: this place has a really great staff. They were so…read moreincredibly helpful, from needing to recycle boxes of bottles, to needing to location a list of wines and beers, they were just amazing. Also this place is not as busy as other places, so I suppose that's what makes it better.

I was kicked out of this establishment for not wearing the "proper mask" on Saturday December 5th…read more I was wearing a mask, the sign on the door simply said "masks" are required, nothing was specified, frankly a halloween mask would be compliant based on the sign. I have been to numerous establishments including this one wearing my mask over the last few weeks and experienced no harassment because the mask is in compliance. On Saturday the 5th I shopped at a Canadian Tire, a Save on Foods and a Lordco and experienced no harassment whatsoever. However an incredibly rude and downright fascistic employee of this establishment started screaming at me for not wearing the "proper mask" and told me that I had to leave. This employee definitely knows I am a regular weekly customer. When I tried to reason with this person by explaining that my mask is compliant and that I was specifically shopping at this establishment to support local businesses during the pandemic this employee shouted "we don't wan't your business" and informed me he was calling the cops on me. I asked him to please do so as I am certain I was in compliance and that this was a clear cut case of discrimination. They never did call the cops on me but continued to threaten to do so for quite some time. Empty threats because they knew they were doing something wrong, they were hoping to scare me into leaving. Had they not said anything I would have been out of the store within 30 seconds, this harassment resulted in me being in the store for more like 30 minutes. If this is about safety you failed miserably, because it's not about safety it is about compliance and in this case, a power trip. The Arms Liquor Store should be ashamed of this behaviour. I will never shop here again or eat at the attached pub and I encourage anyone still believing in freedom to do the same. I was never at any point offered a "proper mask" or even treated like a human being. I am supposed to be exempt since I have a health condition that is none of anyones business except my own. I have been donning a mask in establishments during the last few weeks to mitigate the harassment as most places don't care about disabilities during the latest mandates. This employee sold my wife the liquor I wanted to purchase moments after refusing me service, he touched every bottle. This confirms this employee was never at any point concerned with safety, only compliance and power tripping. This is fascism and the longer we put up with it the longer it will continue. Employees at the local liquor store should not be behaving like the Gestapo to their customers and my medical condition should not need to be broadcast every time I enter a store. Once again this employee and everyone present on Saturday December 5th should be ashamed of themselves, this is disgusting. Boycott this business and support local business's that support the local community rather than oppress it.

He sells the cheapest and worst ubrew kits that money can buy, and nickles and dimes you at every turn. Recently he sold me flip-top bottles without the caps, insisting that they come that way: I phoned the distributor and confirmed that they DO come with caps and the boxes must have been opened. I confronted the owner about opening the boxes to remove the caps, and he insisted that it was his supplier who opened the boxes. I don't believe him at all. Another time he told me that I couldn't bottle my wine for weeks and weeks because of a purported "CO2 shortage". Because I homebrew, I happen to own a tank of foodgrade CO2, but when I offered using that, he refused because "it has the wrong connections". He's wrong about that: it is a standard food service CO2 tank. This man is a liar and a poor businessman. His wine isn't even very good! Save your money, go somewhere more reputable, or buy your wine kits directly from the distributor (you're really just paying extra for the same kit here anyway)

Customers get hands-on training and are e-mailed with special offers and other interesting options. They also sell neat wine-related giftware at reasonable prices. My only complaint with this and every store in this plaza is the crowded, tight parking. You really have to time it perfectly to get a parking stall, and getting in and out of the stalls is sometimes difficult because the parking area is used as a through-way between Coquitlam Centre and Glen Drive. Not the stores' fault but something for clients to consider.
