Wow, this is definitely the best fish and chips I have ever tasted! I ordered the £15.75 cod…read morespecial that came with a large piece of cod fish, chips, a side, a slice of bread with butter and a cup of tea or coffee. For the side I opted for the mushy peas which is typically not found on menus in the U.S. I am not a fried food person and definitely prefer my fish raw as sashimi or cooked any other way than deep fried. However, I enjoyed this succulent piece of cod fish and even ate some of its batter which I usually don't do. I walked by several fish and chips eateries before getting here, so I know this place's price is a bit higher than others'. However, the quality of its food made it justifiable. The friendly staff's quick attentive service and their impressive efficiency from seating you quickly after you step inside, bringing you a menu immediately, taking your order quickly, serving your food as soon as it is done, and bringing you your check definitely give you an overall 5-star dining experience.

They don't just have cod and haddock but have a wider range of fish available. I always have the large cod. The fish is moist and very tasty, the batter is always just right, though you can have it lightly battered. Chips are equally good-firm and dry, not at all soggy. It seems to be open all hours so there is no excuse if visiting the Las Vegas if the North not to visit.

Though it was a cloudy and breezy day, the temperature was quite reasonable for walking the hilly streets and popping in and out of all of the shops. Such a lovely town. With all of that walking, we quickly burned off our light early morning breakfast and stopped in at a patio bar on the main street for a couple of glasses of bubbles and a soda for our daughter while we decided what to do for lunch. I had done some research on the several chippies in town, looking to go beyond the normal fish and chips to scampi and chips. I read that the best scampi is had with full tail langoustine, and that some "scampi" actually contains fish pieces. I asked the bartender her opinion of the best shop in town, and right away she mentioned one that I had read about, Vinegar Jones. In fact, it was right up the street. We made a bee-line for the shop and so had a lot of others as the line snaked out the door. Wanting our fix bad enough, I got in line and ordered fish for the ladies and scampi for myself while my luvley wife and daughter headed upstairs to see if there was seating available, despite the sign on the counter that read "Upstairs Full". They found a table just in time so as I paid for our order, I was told it would be delivered upstairs shortly. The upstairs room is smallish, but had comfortable seating and a nice view out over the main street. Our orders arrived quickly, and the large pieces of fish were ever so gorgeous, piping hot and glistening on beds of chips. It tasted so fresh. But the star of my show was the scampi, full tail tasty nuggets of beauty. With little packets of tartar sauce and a full bottle of malt vinegar in hand, we were in chippy heaven. We had two other meals of fish and chips during our stay in Manchester, but none matched the quality and fresh taste of Vinegar Jones. Cheers!

Ok, the surroundings aren't quite as flashy as the purpose built one in Thornton but it's still a decent clean, comfortable restaurant. On arrival, after choosing a table we were given menus with a sample of one of the daily specials which was John Dory. I ordered the hake whilst my dining companion ordered the John Dory. Both were superb. The batter is really perfect, light, delicate flavour and just the right level of crispiness. I would recommend the 'square deal' option off the menu as it includes mushy peas and a similarly sized fish, just a few less chips than a standard portion. They have a good ice cream range so I finished my meal off with a portion of mint choc chip - one of my favourites. They are licensed too so if you fancy beer or wine with your meal this is possible. I'm now at the point where going to Blackpool for the day and not going to one of the branches of Seniors is almost unthinkable!!
