Avi is a true craftsman, professional, and mensch. His artistry in dealing with wood furniture is immeasurable. I actually found him on Yelp, as he was the closest (and only) wood refinisher to me, and called him up about my mid-century modern dresser I needed stripped of multiple layers of paint and refinished. After speaking with him the first time, not only was he straightforward, told me exactly what I needed (and even tried to help me when I told him I would try stripping the dresser myself first), but he was also kind, knowledgeable, and fun to talk to! I learned he's been doing this for 65 years! And it shows!! After I failed miserably to strip the dresser myself, I brought it to Avi, and OMG I can't even truly put into words the FABULOUS job he did on my dresser!! And I know how hard it was since I tried to do it myself! But really, it is beyond gorgeous!! It was hard to believe it could even look that great! He was also very quick even though he had other jobs to accomplish, but knew I was moving that weekend. And he only charged me the price he had originally quoted me, even though I knew the work and cost of supplies was worth much more than that. My parents bought their first piece of furniture after getting married back in the 60's, a leather lounge chair. I stole it when I went off to college in the 80's and have had it ever since. Needless to say after 60 years it was literally falling apart and was in sad shape, but it's uber comfortable and means a lot not only to me but my mom. I reached out to three refinishing places on the westside and after talking to Avi I felt he really had an appreciation and reverence for these old, classic pieces of furniture, so I went with him, and man, am I glad I did. After having a 100 yr old dining table (family built heirloom) returned from the worst storage company ever (Green Mountain), we were frantic to find a quality refinishing company to restore the table from water damage and other issues of poor storage. He came to our home and not only accessed the damage of the table, but pointed out other concerns on the chairs and buffet that were additionally the result of poor storage. Our story starts with a little history. I inherited some Danish furniture from my mother many years back and neglected it for all of those years. This included leaving some of the chairs outside and using the coffee table for school projects. Recently my wife and I decided it was time to get some nicer furniture so we went shopping. Much to my utter surprise, it was going to cost around $10,000 to replace the teak furniture I had with comparable items. On top of that, I discovered a sentimental connection I never knew I had to the table I grew up with. So my wife suggested we look into getting it refinished. She is a Yelper and a patron of Angie's list, so she spent hours hunting for what appeared to be the perfect place. We were looking for a craftsman who loved his work and appreciated the furniture we had. We could not have found anyone better than Avi. My wife arranged for an appointment so Avi could come see the furniture. From the first handshake I knew she had done perfect in her search. His expertise with our particular furniture was obvious as he knew the complete history of the style and was able to describe the pieces in detail, before even seeing them all. What you get with Avi is thousands of hours of experience putting out a pride-driven finished product. He loaded the pieces into his truck with great care, despite the not so great state they were in. Much to my surprise, we got a call less than two weeks later to set up a time to deliver the pieces back. He dedicated countless hours in a priority mission so that we could have them in time for Thanksgiving. When he delivered each piece, it was like they were brand new. They looked beautiful, the blemishes were gone, and the furniture all felt sturdy. The transformation was beyond anything I ever imagined and it was clear that they were beyond anything we had considered buying a few months earlier. His work is clearly driven by pride. He offers a very fair price for the quality he delivers. There are so very few true craftsmen left, so we feel incredibly lucky to have had our nostalgic pieces refurbished by a true artistic master. What wraps it all together is the amount of pride Avi took in his work. He stayed as my wife and I shuffled the pieces around our living room and dining room to share with us the artistic beauty of the furniture. It is amazing how great they look now. There is not a big enough thank you I could give to Avi in appreciation for his labor of love. If you have old, vintage furniture that you love, then there is no one better than Avi. Avi refinished a custom-made kitchen table for us that was showing a lot of wear and tear after decades of use by a busy family and an ill-fated attempt to refinish it ourselves. The table is just beautiful now. The table is part of a set with several chairs and some built-in bench seating, and Avi also reinforced and reupholstered the chairs and made new cushions for the bench seating. He made a special effort to have the set ready for us as the holidays were approaching. We also had him refinish a bentwood rocking chair with a cane seat and back. This was quite a job because he had to weave the cane by hand. He also made some repairs to cracks in the wood and polished it up. It looks terrific again! I love the way he spends some time handling every piece and looking at it very carefully to get know it before he starts work on it. His work does seem to be a labor of love and he wants his customers to take delight in their furniture again. Our repairs were not inexpensive, but they seemed fair for the obvious amount of work and attention that Avi invested in them. He will also pick up and deliver, though it would help to have some extra hands around for the loading and unloading if your pieces are heavy. read more

Avi is a fine craftsman in the old world tradition. He retrieved a forlorn oak table we'd bought at a store closing in Culver City and delivered it to his shop- all via phone arrangements prior to meeting face to face. Before refinishing the ugly duckling he required us to bring a wood sample in the color we wanted. Within a week he had stripped, gently bleached and sealed the thing. He required us to view it before the final stage when changes could still be made. He is TOTALLY passionate and knowledgeable. The end result is fantastic!!! He delivered it to our home. His fee is based on hours and he is great at giving a real estimate. I highly recommend Avi and would use him again in a nanosecond. read more

The STORY: living up in Ojai and desperately needing a repair on chair seats before renting the house out this week, I'd seen The Finisher's Touch a number of times driving up Lincoln to LAX. Over the weekend we did a family trip down to San Diego and dropped the seats in for Avi to work his magic. When I gave them to him, they were old tatty vinyl seat cushions, but they came back looking LITERALLY brand new. On top of that, Avi knew it was going to be tough for me to pick them up again (driving from Ojai with a 10 week old baby), so he worked all day on the Saturday and went out of his way to arrange for me to be able to pick them up enroute back up to Ojai on the Sunday. I've dealt with Avi for many years and have never known him as anything less than a man who puts his craftsmanship and honor above all else. This is reflected in his old world approach to furniture restoration. I went here because of the few good reviews. I was totally shocked by how bad the work ended up being. I took a small wooden table frame that had cracked due to moisture to Avi. He said he could use clamps and glue to fix the two large cracks for $125 bucks. The price seemed high but having a finisher take care of this meant it would be done correctly, right? Wrong. I came back to pick up the piece a week later and his clamps had scratched and dented the frame is 8 places. Compression dents and scratches on the surface and sides of the table because he was careless when putting all the clamps on. The finish of the table was wrecked. I told him this was unacceptable and he said that he could re-finish the table for me for another $150 bucks. Total scam. He wrecked the finish of my table and then tried to get me to pay to have him re-finish it. I'm never coming back here and I sure as hell won't have him do any work for me in the future. read more

Avi is a true artist, in an overstuffed little 'old curiosity' style shop that you will miss if you blink. I brought in an footstool (from the 20s or 30s is my best guess) trom Hollywood, that was falling apart and its upholstery worn out. I was almost ready to throw it away. I took it in for a new upholstered top. Avi suggested I have him repair the loose joints of the wooden legs and repaint it. Not only did he make a gorgeous velvet top for it, that replicates the original style and color exactly, but he painted AND added antique glazing (his own idea) to the wood. He went the extra mile, at no increased charge. The piece is now a work of art and a true Hollywood memento of days gone by. Avi is the man for your reupholstery and furniture repair.
