A super cool road through the town of Regent that highlights what is most important to the town. Each attraction was exceptional and had so much time and work put into them. I could tell how special these art pieces were to the town and how it's such a defining piece of Regent. read more

Okay, maybe a 5 star is overstating this attraction, but its Americana at its best. Like the "Field of Dreams" or the Biggest Ball of Twine", this is an attraction that it is there.... so you have to go! The Enchanted Highway is the worlds largest collection of scrap metal sculptures located in southwest North Dakota.... in other words, in the middle of nowhere! So if you find yourself driving on Hwy 94 (because who doesn't) take a 32 mile jaunt to the tiny town of Regent. During your trek you will get to view some metal sculptures every few miles or so. But you will also get to see some amazing landscape of rolling hills, prairie buttes, sunflower fields, and horses. This is totally an attraction that the Griswalds (Vacation) would have stopped at if they were on there way through ND. More proof that "if you build it, they will come"! read more

Such a great idea to get people to drive through this part of North Dakota. It's been on my list for years, but never felt like I wanted to make a special trip. I was driving from Bismarck Medora so decided to take a side trip to visit the sculptures and I'm so glad I did. Very cute! read more

The Enchanted Highway is a fun ride in rural North Dakota. Oh wait, almost everything in North Dakota is "rural." The Enchanted Highway is a whimsical ride that passes through farm country and small towns in North Dakota. The art work is a bit sun bleached and weather worn, but nevertheless, the evident creativity of it all will make you laugh out loud. If you get a kick out of wandering around and seeing the sights, travel the Enchanted Highway. read more

Yes, 5 stars for some highway in, arguably, the middle of nowhere. But its really interesting. Driving along in North Dakota I saw a sign for "The Enchanted Highway". Now, I had not heard about this before, and was on the "fast track" back East, but this proved too much for me to pass up. I stopped and googled "the enchanted highway" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enchanted_Highway And found out it is indeed, "real" and a "thing" I could see. So, next exit I get off to see this. The first of 9 "statues" is right on the highway - geese - a large structure with geese on it. Really quite interesting. It happened to be a gorgeous day with blue skys and puffy clouds here and there. All of these statues are made from scrap medal. They are all huge. The next statue is right off the highway and is "deer". Once there there is a sign pointed south in the direction of the next one with the distance. They are all between 1-5 miles down the road. They end in the town of Regent, where the artist is from. The artist went on to buy an old school (no longer used) and made it into the Enchanted Hotel a few years ago. He seems to be single-handedly trying to keep his town alive. This is a 30 mile detour out of your way (+- 30 miles to the town, then you have to go back to the highway) so keep that in mind. It is however well worth it. 5 stars for creativity, effort, sheer willpower I'm sure this took, and interest on the highways coming across America. ** Review 300 - Another thing I loved seeing. read more

It is in the middle of ND. After a morning at TRNP a drive on the Enchanted Highway just seemed like the right thing to do. It was fun if you enjoy Americana. There is an area around each sculpture for parking that is well maintained. There is a maze at one of the sculptures. The are no restrooms. The road ends in the little town of Regent ... not much there but a nice little gift shop. read more

The enchanted highway is a few hours from Bismarck and a few miles from Dickinson. So what is it? It's a looooong highway in the middle of ND decorated with incredibly large metal structures from a local Regent, ND artist. The route is south of I94 and will take you through rolling hills full of cattle, donkeys, and horses. It's a peaceful laid back cruise that, at times, disconnects your cell from the real world and forces you to take a step back and appreciate the peace and quiet of nature. There are donation boxes that allow you to contribute and/or reach out to the artist himself. read more

This is a spectacular drive to see the large metal sculptures - impressively done. It was great that there was a parking area by each so you can see the details. Also, I was surprised how far apart they were. I kept on saying - darn, I must have seen them all, and then a little bit further, I was so happy to see yet another. Weirdness and oddness comes in all kinds of different ways. Cascadia weird is nothing like the oddities one comes across in the Midwest. In the case of the Midwest attractions are deliberately erected to attract otherwise ignorable places and people might even go out on a limb to do it. In the case of Cascadia weird they celebrate their inner freak without going out on a limb at all. We first heard of the Enchanted Highway on the news one night. Or I should say Steve did. The tv usually annoys me and I hardly ever watch it. Any show I do enjoy waits until it is on DVD. From what the newscaster said it sounded like there were copious amounts of sculptures inbetween Regent and Gladstone,ND. We planned to go here on our trip back to Minnesota to break up the monotony of driving. These sculptures were made by a former school teacher to attract more tourists and bring business to the area. There are hardly as many sculptures than what the news was trying to put across but we did enjoy the sculptures we did see peppered along the highway between the two towns. Currently these are the pieces of work on display along the Enchanted Highway The Tin Family(1991) Teddy Rides Again(1993) Pheasants on the Prairie (1996)) Grasshoppers in the Field(1999) Geese in Flight(2001) Deer Crossing(2002) Fisherman's Dream(2006) Spider Webs( In Progress) Probably my favorite roadside piece was the pheasants. There was a whole family of giant birds, including chicks. I got near one head of a chick and acted like it was going to consume me. I would have put that picture on Yelp but alas my phone got haphazardly placed in the washing machine. The photo lives on still on Facebook and Instagram. I find it ironic that I liked the Pheasant sculpture. Earlier that day Steve creamed a real bird so hard on the way getting here it's demise resembled a "death" in a Looney Tune cartoon. Unlike so many attractions in the Midwest(Is North Dakota too far North to be called the Midwest? It acts like a Midwestern state) that come off cheap, trashy, thrown together, a waste of money or down right creepy ( like the Corn Palace at night) the sculptures along the Enchanted Highway are well made, beautiful and a nice (and free!) break when traveling cross country. Trust me, you will need one once you finish driving through Montana. read more

One of those interesting items of Americana that prompt curiosity and in this case a drive down a rural highway through one dying village, Lefor, North Dakota. I admire the artist's vision and work. The geese sculpture right on I-94, exit 72, is the one that is closest to medium-brow or high-brow art. As you drive south towards Regent you pass the other sculptures that have different themes, including one that reminded me of B-movies from the fifties. It's the one with the giant grasshoppers. We met the sculptor at his gift shop in Regent at the south end of the sequence of sculptures. He doesn't seem eccentric but this is one of those eccentric endeavors that interest me, like the man who started to build a direct highway from Duluth, MN., to Fargo. The sculptor would like to construct some more creations. On the drawing board is a giant spider web. I'm looking forward to seeing that in 3 -5 years. I'll add a picture later. read more

About 7 years ago I drove through North Dakota's Enchanted highway. It's not worth going to North Dakota for, but it's a decent folk art assemblage. Some of the sculptures are cool while others cross the line into painfully cheesy. And the massive scale does not save them from this, but only makes them more so. The one the most people see, Geese in Flight, -it's right on the Interstate- looks like a wall hanging on an older single suburban lady's wall blown up to be waaay huge. The family sculptures are pretty tacky, too. They look like they belong at a bad miniature golf course. The pheasants I really liked as well as the grasshoppers. But I have a particular affinity for grasshoppers, so of course I liked that one. Fisherman's Dream was still under construction when I visited. Somewhere I have a photo of me riding one of the giant rusty metal fish, arm thrown in the air like it was a mechanical bull. It's cool to watch the giant metal sculptures slowly rise from the horizon as you approach them, but getting there can sometimes be a little anticlimactic. I hate to be so lukewarm towards a folk artist striving to create a tourist attraction in a vast lonely plain devoid of any, but this highway is more like semi-Enchanted. Maybe the giant spider web he's working on will be sweet and all Tim Burtony. 2.5 stars. read more

I love this highway! My husband and I have traveled through Enchanted Highway on three separate trips now. Once with my parents, once with our son and his family and most recently with our grandchildren. Its such a beautiful drive its well worth taking the time to stop along the way and take a close up view of each sculpture. There other beautiful surprises along the way. Old buildings, fields of sun flowers, horses, farmland just to mention a few. Be sure and stop in for some ice cream in the town of Regent you just might be lucky enough to meet and talk with the man who made these sculptures. read more

It's kind of phenomenal, and, gave me a reason to visit North Dakota. Very large sculptures loving designed, created and maintained by the community. The sculptures fall into the folk art category but the sophisticated skills and workmanship that went into creating each sculpture are on full display. For example, the fish in "Fisherman's Dream" have scales created by cutting them individually. Considering that even the smallest is five-six feet in length there was some serious commitment to doing it right. Driving the highway, around 32 miles is a great way to see the countryside, the farms and the vastness of the Plains. It gave me an appreciation for what it takes to live there. It was a great drive and made me wish that there was more work like this on the long highways traversing our country. read more

We were on the way to Teddy Roosevelt National Park when we ran across Geese in Flight one August morning. We took the Enchanted Highway, and I for one was enchanted. Some of them may be a little tacky, but they are still better than Elvis on velvet paintings, and a great way to spend a morning on vacation. It is not worth driving out of the way to get to the exit, but if you are on I-94 and have the time, it is an interesting diversion. This is one of the reasons I love to travel by automobile rather than plane. read more
