Not us in Esher, we have been privileged to have Garsons Farm on our doorstep for... well, the farm has been running since the 1900's. Garsons became what it is known as today around 20 years ago. It has expanded in the last few years, but what it is primarily known as is a place to buy free range, organic, and where possible, locally sourced, fresh produce. Everything that you buy here is delicious. The fruit and veg are plentiful, and comes in both fresh and frozen quantities. There is a large deli, an extremely well stocked cheese counter (which won best cheese shop of the year 2008), a wide range of pre cooked and frozen meals, and plenty of freshly baked cakes and pies. Garsons also covers the American contingent as well. There is a large community of American families living nearby, and Garsons caters for them by supplying treats like Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemima, Goober Grape peanut butter, Lucky Charm Cereals and of course, lots of boxes of macaroni cheese. I know that these things are not what comes under the umbrella of organic goods, but everyones got to have some treats sometimes!

You can find everything from brilliant pies (Raven's Den in particular), awesome cheese (Lincolnshire Poacher and others), fresh veggies (Earthworks and others), fresh fish and meats... not to mention cupcakes and other sweet treats! We usually start by getting a coffee for the husband from the vendor with the mobile coffee bar (the machine is in the back of his van), and then wander the markets and end at the Merchant for a cup of tea for me. As long as there is a rainbow biscuit on the way even our toddler is happy.

I loved that everything was put in paper bags, not plastic. I read that the market has been around since the 9th century, which I loved knowing. A short walk down the hill brings you to beautiful neighborhoods with cobblestone roads and the huge cathedral. It's a lovely area overall.

Ah, the urge to make many a feast related pun is strong, but I'll resist and instead will tell you…read morethat I honestly LOVE the West Norwood Feast. The Feast is one of London's only people powered markets, meaning that it is run entirely by volunteers who genuinely care about their local area. This makes it an event with a lot of passion and bags of personality. Catch the Feast on the first Sunday of every month, just hop on the overground to either West Norwood or Tulse Hill rail station and spend the afternoon pootling up and down the high street. Retro, Artisans, Gardening and Food are the four central market Hubs (the clues in the name as to what you will find at them) and each is cleverly woven around a community of vibrant local businesses. The majority of the stallholders are also from the surrounding area, so there is a great community feel. If nothing tugs on your purse strings the Feast also offers free entertainment throughout the day - live music, face painting, theatre and you may even find yourself in a hula hoop-off with a small child (guilty as charged!). Disclaimer 1: I volunteer at the West Norwood Feast Disclaimer 2: Buy a flat white from Volcano Coffee at the Food Hub - your life will be better for it.

A very nice farmer's market, Sundays only. It's well worth a visit if getting to Queens Park…read morestations isn't too much of a hike. There were at least 40 vendors including: - 3 or 4 booths selling cheeses - 4 or so purveyors of meats - 2 or 3 seafood sellers - many selling veggies, cakes, pastries, ciders, eggs and other raw materials. And if you just want to show up and eat, there were 5-6 vendors selling sausage rolls, burgers, chicken, pulled pork/beef sandwiches, plus French stews. While there are much bigger/well known weekend markets in London, I think this is the best example of a local one that is mostly focused on farmers, fisherman, bakers and butchers - but that also has a lot of stalls where you can eat something really nice. Nobody is selling overpriced jars of stuff or catering to massive crowds. This is a market where you can discuss how the cheese is made with the person who made it.

This one was just as good. I think california has different regulations or something because there were lots more meat and seafood stalls. There were at least two or three duplicates of each type of stall. I suggest doing a once around to compare prices and see what's all there that day. So excited to come back and figure out what to make that evening for Sunday roast with my market finds!
