Okay, I'm biased, but I love Brazos Community Church (now called Life Church). For years I had a…read morefriend talking about his church and trying to get me to check it out claiming that it was totally up my alley--and he was right. The services are laid back and have almost a classroom feel to them. The small congregation is always friendly and close knit without excluding the new comers. Pastor Paul is great at really touching on topics that are relevant in life. Yes, this mall is located in a strange location (behind Joanne's Fabrics in a strip mall), but it grows on you. You can tell this isn't some sell out church spouting out popular doctrine and sacrificing tough messages. I think what I like the best about this church is the community--people really get to know each other here. They do great things to foster this sense of belonging like monthly pot lucks, dinner clubs, small group studies, etc. I never felt lost in the shuffle of things and there was a sense of accountability without the accusatory nature often found in religious organizations. I've been gone from B/CS for a few years now and have had the hardest time finding a new church in Houston that can match the environment found here. It is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a smaller setting for your Sunday rituals.

Oh, the years of my life that were wasted with Campus Crusade for Christ cannot be reclaimed. And…read morefor this, I'm the most angry. I will always appreciate things that "Cru" did for me, like supporting me through my early years of Christianity and hell, even converting me (yes, I'm using the word "hell" in reference to my accepting of Christ). But the bad outweighs the good. As far as Christians go, it is a pretty hostile environment towards Christians that don't fit the mold. They are incredibly accepting and warm towards non-Christians, but I guess it is because "they don't know any better". As for those of us Christians who don't comply with what is believed to be mainstream beliefs--watch out! Though I have some major bitterness towards their attitude towards Christians that don't fit in their ideals (or even Christians that decide to leave Cru, but continue with Cru ideals within just a church), I can't deny that they offer some great things. Since the A&M campus is so enormous, they do a great job of being a welcoming committee--especially to freshmen. They have all sorts of fun events, retreats, games, etc. They're not hyper-theological and newbies won't be turned off by long words that mean nothing to them. However, there is a huge sense of competition for them and other religious organizations in the area. I've never quite understood it since we're all supposed to be on the same team, but it was never presented that way. If someone decides to leave Cru and join another ministry, expect to be completely cut out of their lives. There are no if, ands, or buts about it--once you leave Cru, don't expect any friendships to last more than a few weeks of them trying to bring you back. Again, there are good things that they have to offer, but keep in mind that after college, you won't have this support system so it will be hard to adjust. Also, be prepared to have East Asia pushed on you since that is their partner region--evidently no other area in the world needs missionaries (unless of course you move to another Crusade region in which case they'll tell you that Spain is the only country that really needs missionaries).

If you are looking for a group of people who will surround you with excitement and mystery, teach…read moreyou how to lie to foreign governments and customs police, sneak your way onto foreign campuses and deceive Indian students into letting you preach the gospel then Cru is for you! Despite the fact that Jesus never lied or taught his followers to lie , He just told the Truth and told His followers to share the Truth. Cru will team members will introduce you to layers of other Cru employees and follows to surround you in what they call "the Cru bubble", they will even tell you that when you find anyone questioning or resisting your desire to engage with them that "sometimes you have to turn away from, cut out, people who are against your personal mission, EVEN YOUR PARENTS"... what! The Bible says honor you mother and father, not turn from their wisdom and care. CRU ministry workers and mission participants are taught to lie and deceive by telling customs police in India that all in the name of spreading the Lords Great Commision. They mind wash people into believing It's ok to say your entering the country on a "cultural visit" or at the campus to " visit a friend" when in fact you are there to preach the Gospel. Which of course is a good act but where do the lies stop in the name of preaching the Gospel.? And since when should company officers (Cru is a business) get paid $500K+ for running a "mission org". Too, in recent years Cru has embedded a lot of critical race theory into their platform. Even pitching in their summer workshops bogus theories such as white guilt and white privileged AND encouraging "equity giving " as a way forward for white believers to atone for their whiteness. I mean this is some serious mind mashing... since when should anyone apologize or feel bad that GOD MADE them white (and male). And don't believe me... just dig into their own website and the websites of other organization that they embrace or support as inspirational examples... they lay it all out in print. But don't believe me .. dig into their own website. Dig deep into all the content, especially the training content. It's all there, they don't hide who they are. Bury it a little but you'll find it... it's not easy to get through to your kid once they grab their mind. Covid shut downs got our daughter out from thier grips and we were slowly able to get her back through our local church but not wasn't easy.
