I was introduced to the game of Skittle which was very similar to bowling but with a much smaller wooden ball and 9 wooden pins. It was a lot of fun. Where the skittle game was located used to be a stable because of this, in this area, the tables are set in the stalls which gives some privacy. There is also other dining areas around the pub as well as an outside seating area. The service was exceptional and the food was good. I ordered the cheddar cheese and chutney sandwich with crisps and a salad.

There was a black board with about 10 specials plus a regular bar menu. It is a 16th century thatched pub. We sat in front of a lovely log fire. The meals appeared to be homemade. Service was relaxed but pretty good in general - this isn't the sort of place to rush things. The menu always looks pretty tasty, and manages be interesting and fresh. It's quite easy for gastropubs to fall into an unimaginative rut with their food. Totally forgot to borrow one of their menus at the end of the evening as it had some great ideas for dishes. I think the thing which put us off in the past was the slightly aloof service. I'm glad to say that the staff on that night were great - clearly from the pashmina and white jeans brigade, but very good none the less.

A delicious home made mint sauce sealed the deal for me. The starter was an usual choice for me, tataki sea bass which was a sashimi style thing. Very delicate and flavoured with coriander and sesame oil. Three courses was probably too much for me, but I tucked it all away regardless. It was £21.50 for three courses, which is a generous price for that amount of quality food. The pud was brownie with whipped cream, fruit and nuts and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I'm still stuffed full now three hours later. The village is very idyllic, reminded me of the place where the Vicar of Dibley was set. I'll go there again and again without doubt. I'd love to stay in one of the rooms too. 10/10.

Although we didn't arrive until 2:15pm after a wet and windy walk at the nearby Seatown, the staff cheerfully accepted our order (their last food order for lunch is 2:30pm). My boyfriend had the venison burger, I had the Chideock Scotch egg, and my friend had the goat cheese salad. Everything was prepared with great care and perfectly seasoned. It was fantastic value for money too, with the bill coming in just under £30 for three people with some food and a drink each. I highly recommend a quick (or slow!) bite here for those in the area.
