Karate was huge for me growing up (uncles with black and brown belts, asking for tonfas and sais for Christmas while other kids were asking for Matchbox cars, a subscription to 'Black Belt' magazine) so I couldn't wait for my kids to get old enough to enroll them as well. After reading a lot of great stories about The Dojo (exposing the kids to volunteering and non-profit work on top of the actual martial arts) I knew this was the place to go. Sensei Dan is a perfect blend of Miyagi and Kreese (stern but nurturing, strict but with a sense of humor) and reminded me of my Sensei Doyle from USA Goju back in the day. I am not someone who typically writes reviews online but I had to take this opportunity to tell you about my experience with The Dojo.  When my daughter was 4 years old, back in 2007, I called the school to inquire about a very short summer program for toddlers that was being offered at the time.  I was on the phone for only a few minutes when I realized that I had stumbled upon a very special place.  I expected it to simply be a business masquerading as a school, which would have been fine for a 2-3 week class for a 4 year old, but instead I had found a truly wonderful school that I continue to proudly and gratefully partner with to provide my daughter with a supplemental education that I believe is absolutely essential to her health, development and success. Sensei Dan is a phenomenal martial artist.  You should definitely speak to him about his experience and credentials.  You could also watch him demonstrate his skill in the Adult Class or on YouTube.  What you will see is uncommon excellence that speaks for itself.  Someone more knowledgeable than me could elaborate more.  I will simply say that I have no doubt that my daughter will become a very skilled and effective martial artist at this dojo.  This is, by no means, my only reason for enrolling her in the school but, as a father, it is comforting to know that she is learning how to defend herself physically and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Most important to our family is how the curriculum at The Dojo so perfectly compliments what we are teaching at home and supplements what they are teaching in the school system.  It is the character education that makes The Dojo indispensable for us.  We have always tried to give our daughter good morals and manners, a sense of social awareness and responsibility, empathy, compassion, focus, discipline, perseverance and self confidence.  These qualities of kindness and grit are, with out a doubt, the secret to a happy, meaningful and successful life.  The traditional academic education that the school system provides is, of course, valuable but it does not generally develop these very important qualities and skills adequately.  We thought that we would have to provide all of that crucial supplemental education on our own at home.  Instead, we have incredible partners in Sensei Dan and Sempai Kim. Our daughter is 11 now and she is already benefiting tremendously from this coordinated effort on her behalf.  Sensei Dan teaches his students to be humble but I will take a little liberty to share some of our daughter's achievements because I believe it is pertinent to this review and that The Dojo deserves its fair share of the credit.  She is a Junior Black Belt who helps teach the toddlers now and who plans to be an Adult Black Belt before she graduates high school.  She is an A+ student who gives her teachers attention and respect and who receives the attention and respect of her teachers in return.  She receives awards for good citizenship in her schools.  She confidently navigates the social circles that become more and more complex every year.  She is physically fit and a healthy and responsible eater.  She is fast and strong.  She is a fearless stage performer.  She is considerate and kind.  We are so proud.  We love her so much.  We are very glad that we chose to enroll her in this dojo 7 years ago.  We are excited for the future and confident that we are doing everything we can to help our daughter make her way in the world. Best martial arts school by far. I have trained at TheDOJO since 2003. Reason for signing up was simple: I was tired of going to the gym. I had no idea what to expect but now, looking back at the years, I have learned how to live a more mindful life. This school is one of the very few schools in the area that upholds the tradition of martial arts. On top of it, Sensei Dan is probably the best martial artists I have come across, and I have seen quite a few by visiting other schools as well as participating in ultimate black belt test in California. So if you are looking for a school either for yourself or your kids that will not only teach you how to be a great martial artist but also how to live a more mindful life, based on principles such as respect, perseverance, humbleness, self confidence.....this is the place to be. read more

Sensei Dan Rominski is a great role model to the children that attend his classes. He reinforces the same lessons that I teach to my step son. I started attending the class myself because I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic and I needed to find a way to help reverse the condition. I wasn't big into going to gyms and with my work schedule it made it difficult. But with classes 5 days a week at the Dojo and the class starting at 7PM it has made it easier for me to attend the classes. I love the experience and Sensei Dan is a great trainer. This has been the best decision that I have made. The other students as well as the staff are all friendly and eager to help. I would definitely recommend the Dojo to any adult or parents that are thinking to have their kids take marital arts. read more

If you are looking for a Karate school for your children or yourself, look no further. The Dojo on Park Avenue in Rutherford by far the best school you can find. I was so impressed after enrolling my children, that I myself joined and have started a journey that I hope will last for many more years. Karate is more than just a martial art, it is a journey. And Sensei Dan is much more than just a karate teacher. He is someone who has trodden the same path you now tread. Someone to guide you on every stage of your journey. Sensei Dan is that man. His knowledge of Karate, weapons, Kung Fu, Judo, Jiu Jitsu ,Chi Gong, Chinese Medicine and much more are astounding. He does not just talk the talk, he walks the walk. His way of teaching both children and adults is truly fantastic. I would never consider going anywhere else for martial arts instruction, and cannot recommend this school any more highly. read more

Sensei Dan Rominski is a great role mode for the kids and the adults that attend his class. He is very polite and caring very helpful. I signed my son up at the dojo because i wanted him to become more active. I moved to Rutherford and this school helped me to get acclimatized to the place. Sensei Dan's approach and the atmosphere at The Dojo helped a new bee to martial arts like me appreciate and adopt the skills. I learned more than just martial arts in the school; I was taught to persevere, encourage, support and help, and take care of my health - a very wholesome approach.
