We traveled to Yarmouth on the ferry. I asked two of the workers for a good dinner spot, nothing fancy, just good food. They quickly recommended The Dinner Plate. After debarking, we drove down Water Street and easily found the spot. However, we arrived ten minutes before closing. The owner was outside as we realized this and although we offered to look elsewhere, he was insistent that we come in and order even when we said take out would be absolutely fine and appreciated. We received excellent service from the waitresses, great conversation with the owner about his travels and wonderful food. The Dinner Plate is ostensibly a restaurant for local working people and not a tourist trap. As for ambiance, a local radio station was playing quietly in the background instead of the usual head-poundingly loud recorded music emanating from every orifice in the room. Local art for sale displayed on the walls. My kind of place. I am addicted to grilled cheese and poutine, so nothing could go wrong. What's-her-name's fish and clams were what she expected. We were visiting from Vermont and found this restaurant by happenstance and decided to give it a try. The ambiance was family diner and the place was crowded with locals. We had rappie pie for the first time and the waitress suggested a couple of condiments to use with it. To my amazement, it was excellent with just a little bit of molasses with each bite. The staff was welcoming and attentive, we were seated and served quickly, and even bought a painting by a local artist while there. Highly recommend eating here. read more

Will never be back. Ordered hot lobster sandwich and a captain's plate. Mine was the Captain plate and it was a take out order. Got home and no Lobster which to me is the whole point to ordering a "Captain's Plate" They loaded the tray with cheap haddock and over cooked clams.. Had to leave to go down and pick up the lobster that was missing from the meal and without so much as a sorry. By the time I got back home, my $25 meal was a soggy deep fried bunch of goo and had rendered it inedible They have now lost 2 loyal customers maybe more once I let my friends and relatives know Only good thing was the girl who took my order was polite but as far as that goes a big thumbs down Very disappointed seeing that this is a fishing town...and such sub par seafood! read more

Three of us split the captains plate, and even then I think this portion was too big! I had lobster bisque and it was so delicious; I also tried the fish and chips, deep fried clams and scollops. It was all good, but you know what's even better? The price! It's so cheap here. You really get your money's worth. We went twice during our week in Yarmouth. The second time I split the Thai chicken wrap and coconut cream pie. Both very good and a good size to split. Love this place. We arrived at the Dinner Plate tonight (7/31/18) after they were actually closed. The owner, who was in the parking lot kindly invited us in, even though the remaining parties in the restaurant were finishing up. We quickly ordered. We split a Ceasar salad and each ordered the pan fried haddock. The lightly fried fish was flavorful, the serving (3 pcs.) was plentiful and the baked potato (instead of ff) was large. Given the time of night, they were out of cooked vegetables. I had a glass of wine and my dining partner had a beer ($5.00/ea.). We split a light and airy lemon cake for dessert. The owner was friendly and the staff was courteous. I would highly recommend The Dinner Plate for good plentiful food at fair prices. We were staying in Yarmouth for our last night in NS, taking the ferry early the next AM to Portland, ME. A little worried about going to the Dinner Plate because it only had 4 Yelp reviews. Went in on a very busy Monday night, probably because it's a national holiday and several other restaurants in town were closed. The very gracious owner sat the 2 of us at a large "reserved" table and then moved us to a booth as soon as one opened up. Really appreciated that since it meant we could order our food and not be standing around, knowing that the busy kitchen would be a little backed up. The seafood chowder was excellent, with lots of fish and chunks of lobster. It's not the heavy creamy New England chowders we Americans are used to, but was a lighter and much better version, IMHO. The fried clams were ah-mazing!! They were lightly battered big whole clams, fried to perfection, not the tiny overbattered clam "strips" I hate. My partner tried the rappie pie, a traditional Nova Scotian dish with grated potatoes and chicken baked into golden deliciousness. In short, a wonderful dinner at very reasonable prices. The hallmark of a good local restaurant? The place was filled with locals and regulars. read more

Yelp's prior 2 reviews of this place were right on. The fried fish was fresh and delicious as was my friend's chowder. We were amazed how close this place is to the center of town and yet off the beaten track. We got there late (8:00ish) and even thigh few folks remained in restaurant, the service was lovely and quick AND price: more than reasonable. read more

If this diner wasn't in the seafood capital of the world, it would get a five. Food is good, plentiful, service is friendly and prompt. Cozy little diner. There are better places in the region, but you can get a fine meal here. I've been back on occasion. read more
