To be honest, I'm not even sure how I got there. It's not even worth it. Inside the place is encrusted with blandness and the drink selection skips through the usual lager cavalcade without having anything new or even decently priced. It's the kind of pub you'd hope to be able to boast about discovering, like some show-offy traveller, but you can't because it's so dull.

Before I start, I'm going to tell you now that I'm going to refer to this pub solely as 'The Buck',…read moremostly because I'm not even sure how to properly pronounce 'I'Th Vine'. Not that I'll be saying it aloud, but as I type it I'm sure I'll be saying it in my head. The Buck itself is a lovely, traditional-looking pub in the heart of Ormskirk's town centre, sat in between two rows of busy shops. From the outside, The Buck has a great old-fashioned feel to it and inside it looks like a proper 'old man' pub (which I love in pubs, personally). The beer available there is very nice and affordable as well as quite varied and the food, whilst basic, is decent enough if you fancy having something with your pint. Alternatively, there is a chippy just across the way for after last orders on your journey home. The staff in The Buck are friendly and attentive, ensuring you aren't waiting too long at the bar and the outdoor area at the front of the pub can be very pleasant if the weather manages to hold out whilst you there, enabling you to watch the world go by (and pass comment on people, if you're that way inclined).

The meals are well filling as well. If you don't want a whole meal they have plenty of snacks and crisps to eat too. The outdoor patio is incredibly nice to enjoy a pint in the evening and watch the town settle down. Theres also plenty of televisions to catch a match on and lots of different rooms if you're not into the rowdy sports crowd. Definitely a must stop in on an afternoon or even early morning!

It has an outdoor bench area which is perfect for watching the world go by on a sunny afternoon. They have a full bar inside, with ales, bitters and lagers on tap. They also have a selection of bottled beers and house wines, and a full selection of spirits and liquors. Given the area this pub is in, you would expect it to be a little snobby as it is on the cusp of the affluent areas of Lower Heswall such as Baskerville Road etc. However, this couldn't be further from the truth, I guess the rich people stay in and sip Moet rather than mixing with the local's in the local watering hole! Great little pub!

There was plenty of food, all really tasty and we had lots of compliments from our guests. All of the staff were attentive and polite and provided drinks on arrival for the guests and allowed us to have a tab for the remainder of the party. Very reasonably priced food and drinks and took the stress out of organising the day allowing us to really enjoy ourselves. Highly recommended!

Stopped off on the way back home to Yorkshire with our caravan only…read morebecause it was on a nice straight bit of road and meant we didn't have to mess around turning or manoeuvring with such a large piece of kit behind the car. What a cracking find. The place had real character and even for a Monday lunchtime was very well patronised. No wonder. The service was excellent; the young chap behind the bar was extremely welcoming and was great with our 2 year-old granddaughter (note: child friendly, although a few high chairs would have been a bonus). The food was well prepared and far more than we could eat. The menus were extensive and provided good value for money. A nice little touch was having the menus pasted into the insides of different books, guides, reference books and even story books for the kids. Overall, a pleasant experience. If we are in the Chester area in the future, we will certainly be back, and I suggest if you, the reader of this review are near there, you give it a try, too; you won't regret it.

Actually quite surprised to report that my most recent trip to the Brocket was an enjoyable one!…read moreWith the other half being from Wigan originally and only living down the road, we used to frequent it quite often; whether it was for the quiz, a quiet drink, or family gathering, it pretty much ticked all the boxes. This weekend's trip was to spend some time with grandparents and, with grandad being partial to a Wetherspoons' mixed grill, the Brocket was simply the best option for all parties involved. Roughly a 15 minute walk from the centre, we managed to avoid any big crowds and quickly settled on a table near the front windows (the back can feel a bit dark as natural light reduces the further back you sit!) The menu was standard Wetherspoons fair, though it's changed somewhat since we used to visit, with new items including burritos, hot dogs, and more pasta/salad options. I'm not sure whether I agree with the calorie count being listed next to everything as, personally, it takes the fun out of eating. They continue to offer drinks with food, though they're not great options to be honest e.g. only one 'proper' cider on draught and only alcohol-free cider in bottles. I went for the burrito with chilli con carne and it was actually a good little meal. Served with tortilla chips, salsa, guac, sour cream and a few jalapenos, it had a good level of spice and was a good lunchtime portion. I pinched a few chips and onion rings from the other half's plate, and have to say that the onion rings were probably some of the best we've had in a while! When you want something simple and pretty tasty, Wetherspoons is a solid bet. The Brocket is also a good option when you want to be out of the centre, especially on a Friday/Saturday night.

I've always thought this…read moresounded more like a restaurant that specialises in cheap, boil-in-the-bag rice, or some kind of dry cleaning expert. Local pub though, not at all. The pub is one of the larger ones in the area, with the building being very large in size as well as boasting an impressively large outdoor area around it. Once inside, the Packet Steamer splits in two, separating those visiting for a few drinks and those coming for a meal instead. The food is very high quality pub food, with their menu offering all the usual classics (including very delicious cuts of beef that make excellent steaks which are very good value for money) and the restaurant setting has a contemporary and relaxing feel in which you can enjoy your meal. The pub side of the Packet Steamer is similarly nicely decorated, with a range of seating there as well as several plasma TVs littering the walls. The drinks on offer there are your usual suspects, all available at reasonable and competitive prices. Handily, there is also a Premier Inn Hotel next door if you have too many and don't fancy getting a taxi home, and the nearby police station should ensure that you feel safe no matter how drunk everyone gets.

If this isn't your thing, I would avoid it on Mondays (I told you, that's all I'm saying). But it's a more subtle Irish pub rather than the out-and-out Irish(!!!) ones with barrels all over the shop and a little corner with betting slips in it which gives a nod to at least a section of the clientele here. I personally like it in here, but it's a bit of an old man's pub. Or at least a mid-life man's pub and so if you're not in a group it can be a bit daunting.

This tends to be a place where the more mature people of an Irish persuasion hang out, so there's less tomfoolery and more belly laughs. Having live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening, plus karaoke on Monday night certainly livens the place up, otherwise it can be slightly more sedate and quiet than you would expect an Irish pub to be. Still, it's as green as the walls, and though the furnishing have seen better days and barrels are used as tables, it's a pretty decent pub to spend some time in and make new friends.
