The Deep! What an awesome afternoon out! We ventured here for a 1/2 day from Doncaster. The drive was easy. The place was easy to find and parking was a snap. We headed in, purchased out tickets (£8.95). We headed in and there was so much to see. There were some people in costumes talking to small children (not sure what was happening there, as we didn't have kids with us). There were tons of different aquariums. Each tank/area has a theme and the organisms in that tank are from that theme. Some areas were brightly lit and others dark. I thought the place was very well done! The Deep is partitioned into themed areas: * The Ocean Planet * The Evolving Sea * The Lagoon of Light * The Coral Realm * Endless Oceans * Slime! * The Industrial Seas * The Twilight Zone * The Kingdom of Ice * Hullaballoo * Deep Blue One * Reflections * Cafés * The Deepartment Store I can't describe each one as well as the website, so check out their website: www.thedeep.co.uk What I can tell you... Give yourself plenty of time. There was at least one school group there when we were there.... so bring your patience. Check out the cafe even if you don't eat there. There is an outdoor observation deck right on the tip of the building accessed from the cafe. It's an awesome place to take photos. The Deepartment Store is really cute. Make sure to check it out before you leave. It's worth the time and money. Check it out. read more

This really is a great day out for the family (provided they like all things marine). We visited on a bank holiday so it was busy and there was a queue to get in but the staff were still smiling and very helpful. We had been tipped off to pre-book on line as this gives you a discount and I was pleased with the cost of a family ticket especially when I realised that it's good for a year! The actual exhibits are easy to see and very informative and staff were great with children. We had a wheelchair with us and found access to be extremely good. The one thing that lets the Deep down is it's catering which is mediocre and over priced but to be fair they do have indoor and outdoor picnic areas and my advice would be to take food with you or eat before or after your visit. read more

The Deep is another of the brilliant rainy day attractions in Yorkshire - It's totally indoors so you can go all year round. The Deep is basically an aquarium, but it's set out differently to most, you start off right at the top of the huge building it's housed in and it takes you on a journey of the seas, you walk along a sloping ramp and there's various features and educational games which explain the story of the sea. You then get to the very top of the aquarium itself where there is a touch pool and usually a member of staff on hand to tell children what's what. Then you get to the main feature the aquarium itself and it is HUGE! you won't believe it until you see it! you then travel down the aquarium until you reach the bottom where you go through the tunnel and watch all the marine life swimming above you! brilliant! One of the best features which is unique to the deep is you then ride on a lift back up to the top and the lift goes straight through the aquarium so you can really get a great view of all the fish! It's a place you can go back to again and again. read more

A truly unique and wonderful experience. I've been taking my daughter regularly for the past 5 years, and she loves every single visit, as does her younger brother. The displays do often update, and the look of surprise the first time she saw the new mud-skippers was worth the price of entry alone. If you Gift Aid your entry fee you can go back as many times as you like for the next 12 months, so it's not as expensive as it may first appear. Definitely highly recommended. read more

This was the highlight of my visit to Hull (OK maybe that's not as glowing a recommendation as it could be). But it really is a great experience for young and old alike. If you have a family it's not cheap, especially as you drag the kids kicking and screaming through the gift shop. If you live in Hull you can get a discount. A lot of people are attracted to the sharks, but I found the octopus and the jelly fish way more interesting. So in spite of the expense, it gets top marks from me for being so super cool. read more

it lost a star as its so expensive to get in! and the food there is extortionatly priced! so like i always say, take a pack up! (they also have a restaurant for corperate functions etc) loads of school trips for this spot, has its own car park, its sign posted from what ever direction you come in from. and good luck! driving in hull is a full on white knuckle ride! so you make it to the car park after following signs and ex amounts of U turns, make your way in, with your expectant kids. and its quite worth the hassle of getting here and the cost of getting in? its laid out quite nicely, loads of interactive displays for the kids to prod and poke at. and little tanks for the smaller fish so you can see them up close. a short tunnel under the shark pool. lots off little talks by the staff about certain fish, the enviroments they live in etc nothing to long with enough information to hold a childs attention! so its quite educational, won't take a full day to get about, and can get really busy. NO flash photography! staff will jump on up from all corners, if you do! not personal experience, just watched some poor bloke getting the no flash photography please lecture! though there are clear signs asking people not to use flash! read more

Amazing piece of architecture, lots of fish in here and it is very deep. Walking around there are lots of different species of fish and would suit children or school groups. There is a lift which runs down the whole building with glass sides so you can get an immersive view as if you were really inside the water! read more

Well I've been to many aquariums all over the country and I have to say that we wish that we hadn't bothered with driving all the way the Hull to visit the much hyped 'the deep'. It was quite expensive to get in and we were very disappointed with the lack of actual exciting sealife, most of the fish looked drugged up and were in tinsy tiny tanks. The educational value was about 1 out of 10 as there was hardly any interactive stuff for the kids to do and the whole experience was over in under an hour and a half. Save your money go to a sealife centre instead. read more

If you can put aside expensive parking £3 and the fact that the restaurant could be much more than it is both in layout and food choice, the deep itself is well worth a visit. It is well laid out with plenty of interactive stations and displays throughout the walk around. The fish are beautiful and there is plenty of opportunity to ensure children and adults of all heights and ages get to see the displays of fish. This is by far the best aquarium I have visited and would be happy to go time and again. I dont find it rushed or too busy to allow everyone an opportunity to see all there is to see. If you did want to read and try out all the interactive bits, you could easily be in there a couple of hours. During the evenings, The Deep have fine dining alongside the tanks which is a nice idea. I am not sure how popular this is but the food is certainly much more varied than the daytime restaurant. There is a little gift shop on the way out full of the usual bits and bobs children love. It isnt too pricey considering what you see inside. We went to Newquay aquarium this summer and they didnt compare. The fish are very well cared for and look immaculate at the deep and as it is fairly new, the complex is immaculate. Well worth a visit. read more

What a great place to visit. The Deep provides fun for all the family at a very respectable price. Many aquariums are a bit boring, tank after tank, full of the same animals. But not the Deep. There are so many different activities and animals to see. The diversity of the animals really impressed me, with penguins, a variety of sharks and even snails! The staff were lovely and the day was excellent. 5 stars for sure! read more

After visiting the sea life center and being dissapointed I decided that a trip to the deep was in order. This was the first time I visited and even though I had to climb many stairs I was not dissapointed. I woudl highly recomend this to any one, it is pricey but so worth every penny. I love the lift that take you up through the tank. read more

Although the structure does not look anything much from the outside inside it is a fantastic underwater world. The aquariums are wonderfully stocked and presented and the whole experience is atmospheric and impresive. There are many different species to look at and learn about, it is impossible to leave the Deep without learning plenty. It is a wonderful experience for children and there are often lots of school trips visiting. It also gets very busy at weekends and during school holidays, if you can it is worth going for a weekday visit in order to miss the crowds. The cafe is spacious and stocks snacks and meals. There is of course the obligitory gift shop. read more

If tanks of wild caught fish being kept in captivity floats your boat, then the Deep is for you. However, if you are compassionate about animal welfare you might want to avoid the Deep. It is also expensive to get in, the cafe sells fish! and is also expensive. If you care about animals avoid and visit the Hull and East Riding museum (for free) instead. read more

a very clean, informative day out. Disabled acces is brilliant as they have wheelchairs to hire, and the staff are very helpful in terms of guiding you the best way around. the large tanks are all clean, and i saw no dead animals in any of the tanks. Even with the 3 school trips when we went its so big and there is so much to do that you didnt really find yourself getting crowded around any single exhibit. The sharks were brilliant to look at and the evolution walk made excellent use of history combined with weird and wonderful species. The Arctic section was probably one of the best bits because the walls are actually maintained with a layer of ice over them which makes for a very very unique exhibit! The lift that goes down the centre of the giant tank was a brilliant experience because you really do get a tremendous view all around and actually feel as though you are in the water read more

I can see the attraction of the Deep, but in my opinion it's a big waste of money. Theres little but miserable fish swimming in circles. I think people only go there because it's well advertised. As for it being 'the world's only submarium', well of course it is; they made up the word! read more

The best exhibition of its type I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. I couldn't fault it in an any way - the staff, access (I took my wheelchair bound mother as well as 2 small children), range of goods in the shop, location, the architecture of the building itself, and of course the sealife! The cafe was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting to see burgers and chicken nuggets, but instead found a good choice of healthy eating options, and very reasonably priced. And what a view whilst eating. All in all an excellent, entertaining, informative and good value family day out. Recommend highly. read more

The Deep is great for a family day out. Children will be kept mesmerised by the hands on experiences and puzzles dotted around. The submarine is always a winner, and young children love to see the bright colours of the fish. The Deep is always clean, and the fish are obviously well cared for. read more

my grandson has decided since visiting the deep he wants to be a deep sea marine biologist, he is only 3 so it definitely left a good impression on him! theres so much to do and look at it makes for a great day out. theres several different sections to visit showing different species that live in different places such as the twilight zone is full of deep sea animals that live so far down they are permanently in the dark and a section all about creatures that live where its very cold, including 2 walls made of ice! the main part of it is taken up with the huge main tank with sharks and octopi and other huge underwater animals. you climax your visit witha trip in a special lift that takes you up through the middle of his tank. amazing! read more

Had a good experience here. We went for dinner with friends and you are able to look at the fish inbetween courses. Food was good and pretty reasonable. A great place for a first date as you have lots to do and talk about should the conversation become difficult! :) read more

My family love this place, its great. Even though it is quite expensive, if you go once, you can go back free for the rest of the year (read and keep the ticket stub from your first visit). We all have our favourite bit, I am fascinated and horrified by the Moray Eel and finding it, my husband likes the octopus, my 5 year old loves the sharks of course, and there is very little he doesn't know about them, my 2 year old loves the smaller coral reef fish and my baby loves to watch it all! There are many diving exhibitions that are well worth watching. There is even a soft play area 3/4 of the way round for letting off some steam, somewhere to eat your own food rather than pay exhorbitant fees for the two cafes. The thing I really dislike is that you have to walk through the gift shop to get out- which is a bit of a nightmare with the kids, although when you haven't paid to get in there are lots of pocket money toys for £1 etc. I would strongly recommend this place. read more
