Breakfast in America
Andy S.

This bed and breakfast provided a wonderful stay for me and my female companion. The owners provided us with a key, a tour, and homemade breakfast. There were short a bar, but pointed my companion and I in a direction where we could find some booze. The bed was cozy and bathroom was spacious. I would have liked the front porch had a view of the river instead of a row of houses, but it was not in the cards for me or my companion. Overall, nice stay with great hosts.

Elsie (the Corners' unofficial mascot) was a welcome companion throughout our weekend!

We were on a trip to Texas and needed a place to stop halfway and chose this gem of a BnB after reading the Tripadvisor and Yelp reviews.

We stayed in the River View Suites, NOT the main house because we were traveling with our dog and only certain suites accommodate guests with dogs. In short, don't plan a stay at the River View suites expecting modern anything in terms of decor, lighting, bath, etc. Upon approach, pulling into the lot, it is at best intriguingly confusing, and at worst awkwardly sketchy. In short, the main house is a beautifully authentic house surrounded by grounds that mostly do not match that of the main house. First impressions set a tone, so the owner would do well to consider paving all parking/driveway areas and polishing the greenery/foliage. The main building where you check-in and can stay is beautiful (to anyone who admires authentically well-preserved 19th century homes). The grounds themselves are filled with the potential to convey the opulent charm of the 19th century gardens that adorned homes such as this one. However, they are a work in progress and you shouldn't expect to have your breath taken away in their current state. I will point-out, the pool area is a quaint little space with foliage and four ornamental fountain statues adorning each corner of the pool. It's small but uniquely inviting. Now in terms of accommodations... As stated, we stayed in one of the neighboring buildings (River View Suites, suite 34), on the "2nd floor" (which is technically the 3rd floor because there is a ground level used for housekeeping activities such as laundry). The 2 flights of stairs are steep so be warned if you have difficulty climbing stairs. The view up there is nice, overlooking some of the grounds and a piece of the river behind it. All-in-all, besides the occasional thumping of subwoofers coming from cars that drive on the street behind the property, it was a peaceful location on the grounds. Inside the suite itself, the appointments are all intended to be authentic to the 19th century so don't expect a couch/chair to melt into at the end of a long day touring Vicksburg. Having been to plenty of 19th century plantation homes and mansions across the south, I didn't mind it, and it was something worth experiencing once (ie being surrounded by classic furniture/decor). In terms of comfort, the king bed with a 25" flat screen was a welcome retreat after a long day exploring Vicksburg and/or enjoying the huge balcony of our suite (which is shared with two other suites, but they were unoccupied most of our stay). The balcony runs end-to-end with the building so even if the other suites were/are occupied, you shouldn't feel cramped but you will share the space. Where the suite was found a bit wanting was ventilation. The AC works well (constant 70 degrees) but air flow is non-existent in the bathroom spaces (double sink-vanity area, separate shower area, and separate toilet/jacuzzi tub area). That made for a constantly humid feeling while in the bathroom space (if there is an operational fan/vent, we couldn't find it). The bedroom area also does not have the best airflow but the airflow is certainly adequate enough to make it comfortable. A note about the bathroom: the shower is something to behold. Specifically, the shower-head. For Seinfeld aficionados, think "Commando 450." This thing is capable of bathing circus elephants. Also, the toilet was wobbly; not to the point where you felt like you were fishing on the Mississippi but just enough to question your sanity a bit. In terms of staff/service/cleanliness, the entire suite and property was clean. And every staff member we encountered, morning (for complimentary breakfast) and night (for formal dinner), was a delight. Everyone was very polite, friendly, and accommodating. Note: the food was good but nothing standout-ish. I would only eat here out of convenience of staying here. In closing, with enough investment, this place could be a truly amazing destination for people seeking an experience that transports them back to a taste of the 19th century. It offers an ambiance and environment you won't easily find anywhere else. I think this location is a microcosm of Vicksburg itself: a beautiful place with the potential to become the most beautiful version of itself.

I was slightly late for arrival, but Paul and Carolyn said not to worry. Upon arriving I discovered the B&B is located a ways south of downtown, and the surrounding neighborhood seemed a bit run-down. Also, there were several dogs roaming in the street. After waiting some time for the dogs to disappear, I went into the main building to meet with Paul. Inside the main building looked in keeping with its exterior, with lots of antiquated artifacts scattered about. I forgot the B&B was basically cash-only (a bit strange given we're in 2018, but I ran with it anyways), so I ran to an ATM to withdraw cash to pay for my stay. After receiving keys I headed to the Gardenia Room. Upon entering the room, I developed this sinking feeling--something about the place just felt awful, like someone's broken dreams. Surrounding one actual painting were several small replicas of expressionist paintings in cheap plastic frames, an old tube television sat atop of a chest and below the level of the bed, to the right of the chest was a non-brand name microwave sitting on top of a refrigerator which appeared to be not working and daisy-chained to an outlet. The bed looked clean and comfortable, but draped about and around the headboard was a length of hot pink lace that did not seem to match anything else in the room. There was one small window to the left of the door, and it made me feel somewhat better to kep it open. I tried to sleep, but my cold/sinus infection was exacerbated by the heater. On the low heat setting, the heater fluctuated every few minutes between about 60 and 75 degrees. The trains didn't bother me as much as the heater. The combination of illness and fluctuating temperatures allowed me little sleep. The next morning I awoke, and found a wasp on the headboard. I then went to the bathroom to run the shower and found a dead roach in the tub. Soon after, I for some reason decided to look into the heater, and could see several dead roaches in the vents. I called Paul and told him I was going back to New Orleans because I was to ill to go to the meetings I was in Vicksburg for, and it was then that I discovered there is a no-refund policy within 7 days of a scheduled stay. It seemed like given I was sick and my lodging was for business purposes, and was not aware of the policy, that it would have been reasonable to refund me despite the policy, but that didn't happen. I really wanted to like this place, the person who recommended it said it has improved and to disregard earlier critical Tripadvisor reviews, but by all appearances it has not changed for the better.
