New paintings were being hung as we entered the small gallery and the owner of the gallery lovingly spoke of each painting as if he was totally involved in the creation of each masterpiece. His passion was commendable. His enthusiasm was infectious and yes I signed up for the next special preview of current works. I hope it is a champagne and caviar night. Love those arty nights. The paintings, mainly of calm beach scenes, were relaxing and full of blue tones. Easily each work could be a feature in a modern lounge room or bedroom. There were also a good range of signed prints, each numbered. I was impressed to see that each print was numbered less than 100. I like the idea of buying a signed print and only 99 (or less) other people might have one. Don't you hate it when you walk into someone's house and they have the same print or painting! You just feel like scratching out their eyes and leaving! ha Unfortunately I could not take any photos...you just have to visit this little gallery when in Newtown. The prices are very reasonable! I hope to visit again soon and see some different paintings. I'll keep you updated.

Exhibitions change every few weeks, featuring both solo artists and group shows. They display some really interesting art, always worth a browse even if you're not in the market for buying. Take, for example, the recent 5th Annual Google Exhibition, which was part of The Sydney Fringe Festival. A bunch of artists were given the same phrase (this year 'Uncanny Valley'), and had to Google it at the exact same time, then take inspiration from one of the resulting websites. Cool, yes? Yes. You can also get your used vinyl fix, plus a range of art services like framing, installation and canvas stretching. With a focus on supporting emerging, interesting and challenging artists, the gallery aims to not only display thought-provoking work but also challenge the currently limited general view of Aboriginal art. Housed in the old Vintage Glamour spot, just before Enmore Park, it's an unusually-shaped space, which seems to reflect its ethos rather perfectly. The gallery opened with the 'Kindling' exhibition, which was a really diverse but beautiful collection of work from cardboard animal skulls to bright paintings to paper installations. Packed with punters, it gave a pretty good indication of the potential this place has. Melbourne street and graffiti artist Phibs also displayed his works here through September, which goes to show the gallery's unique bent. There are also plans in the works for the gallery to host special nights like spoken word and music events.

White Rabbit Gallery, located in the Chippendale, is a multi-level art gallery showcasing…read morecontemporary Chinese art. There is also a gift shop telling unique items and a teahouse on the main floor. Admission is free and they have free daily tours which may highlight several artworks and the artists behind them. We had stumbled upon White Rabbit Gallery while trying to find things to do in Sydney. We stopped by White Rabbit Gallery on a Sat morning. We ended up doing the free tour (about 30 min long) once we arrived as staff had mentioned this to us when we arrived. Staff explained to us the gallery and the types of artwork that they had on display, noting that the exhibits change every few months. She took us around several artworks and told us about the story behind the works and the artists, which was pretty interesting. The art itself was pretty cool - quite unique. Each artist we saw had a statement and a story behind why they decided to create such works. We definitely enjoyed our time at White Rabbit Gallery and would highly recommend if it you are in Sydney!

I popped into Beehive for a little look the other day and found myself in a state of sensory…read moreoverload. With things packed into cubby-type displays and vastly different styles coexisting all together, it felt a little schizophrenic. I am all for showcasing the work of many different artists in one space, but Beehive didn't seem to pay much attention to layout, and what is the most conducive to a pleasing shopping experience. If I were less patient, I would have marched my little self right out of there the second I walked in. But looking close, there were some little gems to be found, so I stuck with it. One little craft line I really enjoyed incorporated wine and and beer bottles that were flattened and turned into cheese boards. With the labels still intact and a cheese knife attached with twine, this would make the perfect housewarming or hostess gift when going to a dinner party. They had sets of beer bottle dishes as well that would be perfect for small crackers or nuts. Another little display I really enjoyed contained jewelry made out of toys. Yep, dominos, scrabble tiles, Lego pieces, Micro Machines. The craftsman(woman)ship is good and the prices are pretty low here in Beehive Gallery, so if you can stand the overload, pop in a have a little look. You might just find that special something that will set you apart from the Sydney pack.

Beehive Gallery is a showcase for artists and craftspeople to sell their work (there were signs advertising a few free spots) and as such, the quality varies enormously. From handmade leather boots to origami earrings, pottery to creepy dead-cat-in-basket ornament things. I'm all for supporting handmade, but there are limits. There's also a bunch of Japanese fabric up the back which you can buy by the metre or just offcuts. And kimonos... My cryptonite... sigh. I think I know a bacon addict who'd get a laugh out of the coasters too.
