Picturesque, fairly affluent and with fine hillwalking and cycle routes nearby, Chipping is the sort of village of which a decent tearoom or two could reasonably be expected.
The Cobbled Corner is located in the middle of Chipping village, with ample car parking to the rear. The freshly painted fascia and renovated stone building are easily fit to grace the cover of any English tourism brochure and the interior is elegant and modern by village café standards.
I've only ever visited The Cobbled Corner for tea and cake before or after a day on the hills. This is a family business, with a husband and wife team running the show. The view into the semi-open kitchen gives confidence that this is a solid eatery with food cooked from scratch on the premises from the good stuff, which is confirmed by their website. On our last visit, my friend Paul S. enjoyed an apple and blackberry crumble submerged (!) in an impressive amount of custard, while I had almond tart. Both desserts tasted wholesome and well-made, with the bill, including one cup of tea, coming to a very reasonable total of £6.
What lets The Cobbled Corner down, however, is that the staff team don't really seem to have a firm grip of the business, leading to delays in being served, a bit of nagging going on and therefore a less-than-idyllic village tearoom atmosphere! However, from a cursory look around the village, I don't see any other tearoom in Chipping with the same level of ambition as The Cobbled Corner. So The Cobbled Corner it is for us. Keep the cakes coming, folks - preferably with more of a relaxed, cheerful, business-as-usual ambiance. read more
