I would…read morehave to say this is certainly one of the best assisted living places I've experienced compared to many others I've visited. I read something saying the building was constructed sometime around 1999 and it still looks to be in excellent condition. This assisted living community has very nice communal areas. The atmosphere for the residents seems active and vibrant. During my visits the residents were very enthusiastic when lunch time arrived with a lot of pleasant seating areas to enjoy meals. I had the opportunity to eat here and met the chef who has worked here for over 20 years! I was amazed to discover the chef had previously worked at such NOLA legends as LaRuth's, Commander's Palace and Salvatoire's restaurants. Overall, if I ever had to end up in an assisted living community, this location is one of just a very few on my list of options.

In between the folks live in rooms they decorate and eat great New Orleans food. There is a small coffee bar, large tv area, a cathedral and church. The staff are very personable - night swing shift not as much so - a doctor prescribes drugs and nurses do the hour to hour day to day. There is transportation to town and a daily happy hour. How that works with the meds I don't know. But It is very expensive. Hope you save money on top of your ssi check. I Believe it's about $70000 a year to start. The building is stately, well kept, large rooms and lovely chandeliers. Out front there are pools and fountains with koi. Nice stately trees. The area has lots of things to do . Whole Foods is nearby.

After speaking with insurance they informed me that they (nursing home) were the one's that needed to handle the insurance and all I had to do was get the medical forms filled out doctor. Makes you wonder if the large staff are primarily for administration rather than nursing care. Our experience with the aides was better than with the nurses. It seems to be common practice for the nurses to take lunch/dinner breaks with no coverage for them while they are gone. Just the other night my father needed morphine during the night and it took 45 minutes to find the nurse. It was 4:45 in the morning and an aide said that the nurse would be available after she finished "feeding" a patient. Turns out that she was on her lunch break. St. James spends a great deal of time and money on public relations and very little on the actual care of the patient. Please do NOT be taken in by the slick image.

Patients are left for hours with no attention.Do not leave your loved one there with the expectation that because you are paying a fortune they are getting exceptional care. . I had to pull my loved one out ....have never been so disgusted . I am an RN and would not recommend this facility to anyone I care about. They are more concerned with aesthetics of the independent living areas than patient care. Don't be fooled by the chandeliers and new paint ....its all for looks . Never assume you can forget about your loved one thinking they are being cared for. You MUST check on them daily .
