I came to Chop Shop on a whim. It was a Friday, I didn't really need a haircut, but I was bored, so I decided to get one. All the usual barbers in Providence were booked, so I logged onto Yelp to see if there were any decent places nearby. And that's how I came across Chop Shop. Appointments are only accepted on Tues/Weds/Thurs, which relieved me of my anxiety about being turned away as a walk-in. I arrived around 9:45 AM, and there was ample street parking. The shop itself was spacious and clean with a no frills decor. I was immediately seated by a barber, John. John is a man of few words, but is extremely attentive. He asked me what kind of cut I wanted, I answered, and he asked a few clarifying questions. Of the small talk we had, John mostly responded with a protracted, unimpressed "uh huh", but I didn't mind that. It was clear he was involved in the details of my cut. While cutting my hair, he didn't answer phones or respond to any messages, which is all too common at most barber shops, and I greatly appreciate that. In the end, John not only gave me a high-quality cut, he gave me the haircut I asked for. This haircut would easily run me $30 in Providence, but I was only charged $16. This is a great, professional barber shop in the Cranston/Providence/Johnston area. This shop is in a convenient area with lots of street parking close by. I have my hair cut here several times by John and he is a true craftsmen and has always treated me with the utmost respect. The barbers here are trained and experienced and work with you to give you the cut you want, and the shop is clean, modern and has an interesting aesthetic, And on top of it all, the prices here are very fair for the quality -- only $16 for a standard cut (before tip). I walked in, as opposed to making an appointment, on an "appointments only" day. Both John and Steve were present. They both went out of their way to make me feel welcome and let me hang out until they had a break in traffic and John gave me a cut. Very professional in both demeanor and execution, he took pains to be sure that what I got was what I wanted. Meanwhile I enjoyed great banter with them and the other clientele, as well as the décor which is traditional barbershop mixed with 12 year old boy's bedroom and assorted gas station type memorabilia. I think they call the stuff "Petroliana". One thing I think another reviewer mentioned is they don't stop every five minutes, and in this place the phone rings every five minutes, to take calls and make appointments. Steve let's them leave a message then calls a whole bunch back at once and sets them up. This is a much more polite way to honor your customer's time than the other system, IMHO. In any event, The Chop Shop a great way to blow an hour on a rainy afternoon and come away spiffed out. I've been to this shop twice now. The first time was as a walk-in on an appt only day and Steve squeezed me in. I had been going to different Supercuts since moving here two years ago and was never happy with try the cut. Steve has done a great job both times and I had forgotten what a pleasure hot lather and a straight razor is. I'll definitely keep going back. read more

The Chop Shop opened not too long ago and is now the 'go-to spot' for mens haircuts in the area. This place was completely built from the ground up and is now covered from head to toe with nostalgia (from antique model cars to an antique Coca-Cola soda machine). The decor alone makes it worth a trip! Steve has been cutting my hair for years now, since he began as an apprentice a few miles away, and continued as a professional at Village Barber Shop. He is what one would call a perfectionist, always checking his own work over several times to determine if things are in line and it is symmetrical. Definitely the guy you want in charge of putting scissors and buzzers close to your head and ears! I live in New York City, but come home to RI to visit family and friends from time to time. Now it's at the point where my girlfriend will not let me get a cut at a NYC barber since she's fallen in love with the haircut I get at The Chop Shop. It's worth the wait for me, though. read more

I have been getting my hair cut from Steve for about three years now. I grew up in Cranston but had to move down to New York for work but the way Steve cuts my hair and the attention I receive each and every time I am in the chop shop I will not get my hair cut anywhere else. To me it is worth the three hour drive to get my haircut at the chop shop and also catch up with friends in his very busy, social barbershop. It's the perfect mix of an old school type barbershop where you can get any style of cut you would like. Whether your an old friend of his or a brand new customer you will get the same amount of time and detail in your cut which you can't find at many barbershops in Ri.
