Smile-worthy stuff. It sets the scene for this modest eatery in the very un-Greek suburb of Hawthorn, in the very un-restaurant-like location of being attached to a Caltex. "Oils ain't oils" as they say, so if you want the good oil on this joint look toward it's picture board - a wall of photos capturing characters who have wined and dined and wined here before. It gives further insight into the humble and fun nature of the place. Smiling Chef Sam Antoniou is found in the kitchen with parents Toula and Peter. They all wield cheeky senses of humour, upping the enjoyment ante of your visit. Ultimately you've come for their food. The best way to tackle it in these family-type digs is to hoard some friends around an Astros banquet. The "Apollo" includes chicken yiros and calamari; adventure into the "Poseidon" and tiropites (cheese triangles), lamb yiros and whitebait await; or brace yourself for the "Zeus" and be further fortified with Greek sausages and prawns. There's a takeaway menu, outdoor tables and car parks at that Caltex. Plonk wise it's licensed but the corkage too is a little cheeky so perhaps play "when in Rome" or Greece as it were with the wine list and try some vino tipples from the homeland.

The setting is suburban to the max and. as Roz said it's very un-glamorously attached to a servo. In true Australian-Greek style, all the mains are served with chips and Pita which are delicious, but they very obligingly leave either, or both off for me if I ask . I suffer from the eat-everything-on-your-plate disease so I sometimes do this to save myself from mostrous serves. This means I'm left to tackle the chicken breast as big as my head and generous salad, which to be honest is probably more than I can handle in itself! They do a bunch of my Greek faves... whitebait, saganaki, meatballs, kalamari and a bunch of others as entrees or mezze. The mains boast every type of souvlaki or yiros, along with moussaka, mix grill, selection of fish, prawns, or even quail.

So this is how we came upon Cafe Prego ;) I must say, this place exceeded our expectations from the beginning. We came here expecting a middle-of-the-road pizza and pasta place in the same vein as many other. But when we looked at the menu, we could see that there were some other influences at work here - falafel platters and moussaka on an Italian menu? Interesting! The garlic bread we shared was amazing - not good if you don't like your garlic bread dripping with butter ... but I thought it was delicious! More like a garlic pizza than garlic bread - yum! I ordered the 'George's' pizza - salami, olives, marinated tomatoes, anchovies, bocconcini and fresh basil - it was amazing! Meals came out very quickly (we were still finishing off our garlic bread), the base was cooked perfectly - not too crusty - and the toppings were generous and fresh. My partner had the moussaka, which she was was delicious and very 'homemade' tasting (I had a bite, and had a bit of food envy :P). The staff were very efficient and friendly, and we felt very comfortable here. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with Cafe Prego, and would definitely come here again ;)

Estia is hands-down the fanciest and most authentic Greek restaurant I've ever been to. From the moment we walked in, it felt like a getaway to the Mediterranean -- ocean views, warm lighting, and that relaxed Greek island vibe. We ordered the saganaki, chargrilled octopus, kleftiko lamb, and spanakopita -- every single dish was perfection. Like, flavour explosion, melt-in-your-mouth, zero-faults kind of good. The loukoumades and baklava for dessert? Unreal. Sweet, crispy, soft -- 10/10. Service was next-level. Super friendly staff, quick service even though it was packed, and they surprised me with a free dessert for my birthday! The staff made me feel like family. Not cheap, but totally worth it. The food, the setting, the whole atmosphere -- it's a special place. I'll be coming back for every celebration... or just when I miss Greece. Pro tip: Book ahead and try to go at sunset. The view over Henley Beach is unreal.
