Planet Comics - Had to pick up a cheap and geeky thrill before I left!

Planet Comics

Finally visited Planet Comics in Greenville this weekend. Yes..they have a good selection of…read morecurrent comics (by current I mean from the last few months), back issues are pretty lacking. The games isle is pretty haphazard. Hard to even find what you are looking for because there seems to be no rhyme or reason to how the shelves are stocked (example: They have a Bumblebee transformer figure in 4 places in the store scattered randomly..put all of 1 item in the same place). My BIGGEST peeve was 95% of items in the store had no price on them what so ever. How do you expect to sell things with no prices??? I did ask the cashier about the price of Funkos and she acted like I should have already known the price ‍. Ummm...no prices on boxes, no signage saying what prices are...guess you have to be Professor X and read minds if you want to go in there and be aware of ANY prices. My opinion...skip this one and just hit up the Planet Comics in Anderson...bigger store, better selection, most items are priced, and their back issue selection blows Greenville's location away.

As an actual avid comic book reader, the 1-star reviews don't track with my repeat weekly…read moreexperiences here. I'm not usually one to jump into commenting about other folk's reviews... but since it seems like they were left by ze crème de la crème~, I figure I should at least submit a counter balancing review. Obviously, from not being there during the 3 year old's traumatizing YELLING... I can only say that the three clerks (including the owner) behind the counter I've encountered in my many visits, are almost painfully mild mannered, friendly, helpful folks. I can't even imagine any one of them looking, acting, or sounding vicious enough to be traumatizing. I mean, I guess the temperature in the room IS about room temp (70 degrees) so if you are or are raising a snowflake... Do not enter... you might melt. Low quality in what way Mr Deadpool? The place is well organized, the shelves are modern, clean and not some wired shelving. I would only place Borderlands (only the top dog in the area) above it. Easy to scan. New, new books to the left, issues that are recent as you go deeper, and back issues there beyond. They usually have new books that other shops in the area pull for subscribing die-hards and/or are sold out of. The place is small, sure. But they're expanding... and what's your ideal state? LESS comic book stores? You want eBay as THE source for your hobby? Knock yourself out, man... Planet comics is my go-to for new/recent comics. I go to Borderlands for the experience, and I go to Richard's for back issues and to talk comics. They're all valuable vendors and members of the community.

Book Warehouse Outlet - Comics

Book Warehouse Outlet

I am so happy that I saw an advertisement for the Book Warehouse Outlet on Instagram. Once a month…read morethe location has a 70% off all books. Hence the importance of my visit. We arrived about 30 minutes after the business opened. This was a visit that we pre-planned/research for. Our research led us to learn that the warehouse has no AC. Because of this heated detail, we decided to bring fans and water. Our choices led to our first visit being a bit more enjoyable. The amount of books at the warehouse was insane. We were at the warehouse for two hours to give some context. It was a bit overwhelming, but brought me so much joy. I was able to find series books by author Kimberly Lemming, a date night cookbook, a Lisa Jewell novel + so many more books. The selection was plentiful, although I do wish that the genres were all grouped together in a central location. Also, I think having direction signs for payment lines and directional travel through book aisles would be very helpful.

Luckily I saw a video with tips on how to shop here--it really helped! This is a true warehouse, so…read moreit's hot inside. We came prepared with portable fans and a cart for our books. Got there at 8:15 (they open at 8) and it was already packed. It's definitely overwhelming with the crowds, but we took our time and browsed what we could. We were a little disappointed not to find books from some of our favorite authors, but there's still a huge selection across all genres. My biggest critiques are the lack of clear signage for genres, no arrows to help with flow, and a need for someone to direct the checkout line--cashiers were calling people up but many couldn't hear them, leading to unnecessary wait times. That said, I compared prices with retail and Amazon and still saved over $300--spent $175 total. Definitely worth the 6-hour round trip, and we'll be back!
