I brought my pup Gracie, a pitty mix, to the Saint Paul location for basic obedience and had a great experience. The trainer was patient and knowledgeable and wonderful to work with. And on the last day of class when all the dogs were testing out, my pup seemed to be over it and eventually just laid down and refused to do any more. The trainer laughed and sympathized with her and gave her some pets, telling her she was a good girl. I definitely recommend bringing your pup here for training. read more

We recently sent our 6-year old Cavaliers to Boot Camp with Wendy in St. Louis Park and would highly recommend this service. Within the first week the dogs were learning new commands, but surprisingly were calmer and happier at home. This has remained true several weeks after class ended. I believe the dogs appreciate that we can communicate and understand them more effectively. We found Wendy's bi-weekly human coaching sessions and emails to be helpful learning tools. Her style was approachable and informative. The dogs clearly enjoyed their time with her, too. if there was a lower rating, I wouldve selected that rather than 1 star. we took our dog to level 1 obedience class, first try with nick and second try with Stephanie. Nick was a complete liar. The intern for that class turned out to be my old principal. Even after giving clear distress signals, and my visible discomfort, nick proceeded to make jokes such as "don't make me get your principal!" And "don't make me send you to the office" which later on caused numerous panic attacks for me after having to leave public school due to the administration. He then tried to coarse us in to paying 20$ for a 5$ tube of dog treats since we were unable to bring our own due to coming from an appointment the opposite direction from our house. He criticized how we were going about his training, when we were doing exactly what everyone else was. He never engaged with us or our dog. We then left that class to try another level 1 obedience class, this time with Stephanie. She used every other dog in the class for demonstration while leaving Bailey out of that loop, time and time again. She told us she would give us a printed out copy of the training plan, so each member of our family that didn't have access to a device could participate in training our dog. Yet she didn't follow through and instead told us to do it ourselves, knowing we can't. She refused to acknowledge our dog or our family. She was very stand offish and rude. we had just gotten off the phone with aaron, a manager of the dog trainers. She told us that Stephanie wouldn't demonstrate with our dog cause our dog would hide from her, which couldn't be farther from the truth. We have video evidence of this mistreatment and lies. Aaron then told us if we disliked how we got treated, we could find somewhere else to get our dog trained. Verbatim. They are dishonest and don't care about your dogs. They just want your money. My dogs name is Bailey. She's an English cream retriever and the absolute sweetest girl. She loves people, she loves cuddles and everything that has to do with any attention from any person. We were really struggling with behavior issues and housemate aggression between our corgi and mixed breed. We recently completed the Leash Aggression class with the instructor Nick at the St. Paul Canine Coach location. I was so impressed with the progress that we made during the 6 week session. Before the session, our pup pulled when we walked and would show aggression anytime we saw a dog when our pup was on a leash. The session gave us some tools that really worked for us and our pup. He now walk without pulling and we are able to avoid a lot of the aggressive behavior that he exhibited before we took the class. $160 is not something I drop lightly. In terms of my budgetary priorities, that's a lot of lattes and bread. But my dog friend Chelita, who is loyal and good and true and loves nothing more than ice and snuggling, also likes trying to eat other dogs. It's not a super fun attribute. She was found on the street in Denver, so who knows where this came from- sometimes she'd be totally fine at dog parks, but sometimes she'd get her panties in a twist about something and take off after other dogs like a cheetah after gazelle. You see this happen in slow motion, and it makes you wish you had brought the tranquilizer gun. So finally, FINALLY I sucked it up, airkissed 30 lattes goodbye and signed up for a six week dog-on-dog aggression class. We just finished the second week yesterday, and let me tell you... freaking incredible. Blair is our instructor, and she is clear, consistent, and gives GREAT instructions. She's not scared of aggressive dogs. She loves dogs. And as a dog owner who has gotten a little stigmatized about her dog's behavior and look, this has allowed ME to relax and learn. The most important thing you should know before signing up for a class like this is: if YOU are not prepared to do this 100%, your dog will not get better. Nothing will change. Blair expects practice outside of class, and moves her lessons forward accordingly. So don't bother dropping this kind of money unless you're going to take the lessons home and work with your dog daily. I don't even know where to start with how much my boyfriend and I loved our experience with Canine Coach. We had a dog with very severe issues - excessive barking, anxiety and extreme dog aggression that made even going on walks nearly impossible. The owners who had her before let these issues go unchecked because "training is mean". Sigh. After months and months of trying to train her on our own and doing everything responsible owners should, we we're coming to terms with the reality that we couldn't handle her. No amount of exercise could tire her out. As a last ditch effort, we enrolled her in the 8 week boot camp. Honestly, I feel almost bad for Cele because our dog was such a difficult case. Boot camp has several other dogs so our dog had to be given special treatment because of her aggression. They tried a few times to introduce her to a couple ultra-chill dogs with no success but this was not for lack of trying. They never gave up on her though this issue was too deep-seated to help. However, her obedience training results were amazing! She went from a leash-pulling monster to a respectful, lovely little walker. People on the street would comment about how they wished their dog walked like that. They figured out how she learns best and we used that to teach her some fun tricks to keep her mind occupied. Her barking in the house was dramatically improved and they taught us how to keep her distracted and calmer when we run into other dogs on our walks Later on, we had an in-home session with Maureen to try to get our dog and our upstairs neighbor's dog to tolerate each other since they've had a couple fights (his dog was ALSO dog aggressive). It was wonderful and, by the end of the session, both dogs were lying in the same yard relaxed and ignoring each other politely. Of course, we were never able to duplicate this miracle exactly but life was much easier after this experience. It's important to know that, like all reputable programs, it's not about them taking your dog, training it then giving it back all fixed. It takes a LOT of work on the owner's part to really learn from the trainers and be accurate and consistent at home. If you wont put in the work at home, you'll be wasting your money and your dog wont absorb anything. A million thumbs up for Canine Coach! The next dog we get, we'll be enrolling them in boot camp automatically whether they are poorly behaved or not. read more

I had a voucher worth $50 from a silent auction and initially enrolled online for a class and paid by check but the class was full. I did call and asked some questions and decided leash aggression class would be helpful for my rescue dog Hunter. Hunter had a bad history of lunging toward other dogs on the other side of the street and sidewalks while walking. Highly embarassing. The instructor Julia was so smart. My dog caught on quick to leave it exercise, non negotiable sit stay, loose leash walking without pulling and redirection when she meets another dog on the sidewalk or across the street. I had to learn a new way of walking Hunter and was hesitant as she is a chronic scent hound. We have encountered other dogs walking and I have used these skills and techniques and they work for my dog. Julia was gone last week so Courtney covered class at Lake Nokomis. She is also a very good trainer. The classes were 6 weeks and my dog caught on after 2 classes. Highly recommend this class on leash aggression. Two paws up for K9 coach! My dog and I have been taking classes with Maureen and we couldn't be more pleased! I adopted my cockapoo a few months ago and was having a few obedience issues that I couldn't figure out. Maureen's advice and expertise has been very much appreciated. The class was a variety of breeds, sizes, ages, and abilities. I was worried the first night of class that I wouldn't remember everything, but Maureen sent out weekly emails reminding us of everything we went over in class. The classes are small so you get a lot of individualized attention, and they are constantly starting new classes so it is very easy to find a time that works with your schedule. I am very surprised how much we've covered and how much my dog has learned in such a short time. We will be going further with levels II and III. read more

I've taken my 3 year old bulldog to 3 different training programs here. The first when she was a puppy , the second when she was 18 months old and the 3rd this past month. She loves the classes and I do too. Training is as much about the human as it is about the dog and I get lazy in reinforcing the training between sessions so we need to go back to k9 coach as much for me as for the dog! I love that they don't pass judgment, they obviously know their stuff and you can tell they love dogs. Jeff is my favorite trainer, but I'm sure the others are great too! I've been to other dog training sessions and ey didn't hold a candle to k9 coach. read more

I used Canine Coach when the founder, Maureen, was training. It's gone way down hill since then. I went to a 5 session puppy class. The trainer never smiled once. He showed zero interest in my puppy. He played a radio in the background and then used a sound system to talk over it. I tried one other trainer hoping she'd be better. I guess she might have been slightly better but she spent part of our session bad mouthing the first trainer I had, and then went on to bad mouth other trainers and programs as a way of saying Canine Coach was better than others. Very uncomfortable! There are better programs. Keep looking. read more

We really wanted a strong foundation as pet owners for how to take care of our dogs, so we started out with Puppy class, which was incredibly fun and educational! I brought my dog here for leash aggression classes. This was a 6 week class and at the 5th week session my dog and I were only at the session for about 10 minutes before my trainer and I agreed that my dog was not ready to be walking near so many other dogs (as the last 2 weeks of the course were near a dog park). THAT BEING SAID, I am more than pleased with how much improvement my dog had in just those 4 weeks of class. He still has along way to go, but he is able to walk by other people (and SOMETIMES other dogs) and remain clam while walking by my side. My trainer's name was Lauren and she was wonderful. She emailed me weekly to check on my dog's progress. She took extra time before our class was scheduled to start to try a new technique on my dog. Driver - pitbull mix - and I have taken 5 various classes with Canine Coach. All were fantastic. We took obedience 1 at another place and it just didn't fit for Driver - too easy on the dogs. I learned Driver needed me to demand good behavior - he responded. The Aggressive dog class taught ME so much and Driver fell in love with our trainer, Blair. Obedience 2 also was great and we are getting ready for Driver to become a Canine Good Citizen. The most fun were Agility for Fun and Tricks class. 5 stars? Hmm, not so fast. I recently enrolled my dog into obedience training where my dog did complete the course. I feel as though the trainer did her job as she was instructed to do by company protocol.The problem that I have is that the training all took place in a controlled environment with minimal distraction which in the case of my dog who I admit can be a challenge,it did very little for her in real world situations. I'm certain for some dogs the training is very productive. However, for mine it was not. Perhaps this was just not the right training facility for my dog. So, I've been debating if I should write a review for these guys or not. See, not only is there a picture of me attached to this review but so is a picture of my dog PLUS I also still shop at both Urbanimal locations. I know, I know. I shouldn't give a crap at all but, I'm a Minnesotan woman and I not only carry a lot of guilt, I also want to make everyone happy. It's in my DNA. With that said, we were so unhappy with the training that we didn't even bother going to the last session. This was last summer and Carl was about 5 months old. We weren't with Maureen, who I hear is a miracle worker, so this isn't about her. I can't even remember the lady's name, to be honest but we did go to the Uptown location. I took him there not because I thought a 5 month old dog could be trained to do anything I asked it to, but because I wanted him to have a good foundation that we could build on over time. Basically, I just wanted the little jerk to understand his name and come to me when I said it. That's it. Each class we would learn something new and then practice it, one dog at a time, in front of everyone. Guess what? Carl NEVER got it. The trainer saw this and just went on to the next dog. It's like she was blind to the fact that my dog was doing exactly what he wasn't supposed to be doing. I figured he was just over stimulated, so we continued to practice constantly with him at home. He still didn't get it. I would go to class early and ask the trainer about it, but she basically shrugged it off and said we had to keep trying. I didn't pay this woman to not answer my questions, you know? I definitely felt like she knew he wasn't getting it (pugs are known to be pretty stubborn) and she wasn't even going to bother to help me correct it. All of the other dogs had caught on and mine hadn't and nothing was being done to help me with it. My boyfriend and I both felt like idiots sitting there every week. I mean, what was the point? Carl's grown up now and doesn't leave my side when he's off leash AND he even sits when I ask him to. I learned a couple of good tips in the class that helped me out, but it's nothing I haven't heard from Animal Planet and that Cesar guy on tv. I'm proud of my little alien. read more

I am a little perplexed about the great reviews of this place because of my experience. It makes me wonder if we just got a bad trainer. Positive training is non-negotiable with us, especially with as sensitive and fearful of a dog as we have. The first night of level 1 obedience, the trainer made us use a rope choke leash, which was already a red flag. Then, at one point my dog planted his butt on the floor and wouldn't move. The trainer said "DON'T let your dog do that to you," grabbed the (choke) leash and yanked him across the floor. To me this shows a profound lack of understanding of dog behavior and of skill; a good trainer will help you find a way to communicate with your dog that doesn't require coercion. We didn't go back. When I emailed later, they were courteous and gave us the rest of our money back, which I appreciated. I am giving two stars instead of one because of that. Wherever you go, don't sell your dog short and avoid any trainer or advice that jeopardizes your relationship with your pet. I've taken my 13 month German Shepherd to three classes at the Canine Coach. We started with Puppy Class, Obedience 1 and most recent Obedience 2. I think the teachers are awesome! So full of knowledge and can adapt any lesson to your dogs individual needs or problems. Lydia was unbelievable in level 2. We had all sorts of dogs in our class and each dog made tremendous improvements. Her personality and demeanor was very easy to work with and learn from. We learned so much. I use our new skills daily. I'm look at taking her leash pulling class next. She always listened to us and answered our individual issues even after class when it was time to go. She made class fun to go to, talked to us all like we were all class-mates, never felt like she was preaching to us. She always had an answer, she knew so much. read more

Over the years, my Lola has become fear reactive to other dogs, which became a huge problem on our walks through the neighborhood. I cannot even think about how much $ and time spent with trainers who did not recognize the fear in her, that used such negative responses to her that I actually had to ask one trainer to leave my house and never come back. Then I met Blair, from Canine Coach. WOW. She listened to me, she watched Lola and I, and within the 2nd visit, Lola was back to doing her fancy heel walk by my side! I can't believe how such common sense, positive body movements that I learned to do from Blair, made all the difference to Lola! We have so much fun again on our walks! No longer am I constantly in fear that Lola will react. We now have a proactive system to our walk and I put Lola at ease before a fearful situation could occur. AMAZING! Also, Blair and her team at Canine Coach approved a Dog Walking class for my team at Urban Tails Waggin'. We had close to 3 hours with Blair to learn anything and everything to help us be better at the service of dog walking that we provide to our clients. My whole team raved at the positive tips they received and within a week, their own dogs and the client's dogs they were walking were learning to walk in perfect heels by their side! As first time dog owners, my husband and I were at a complete loss on what to do when our little two month old puppy started terrorizing our house. In a panic we turned to Yelp to help us find a place that could teach us how to train our wild puppy before he destroyed our house and sanity. We found the Canine Coach website VERY helpful and loved how each class gave you a thorough description of what the course taught. The description of the puppy training course seemed to address every issue we were currently having with our little guy so we immediately signed up for the class and eagerly awaited the day that training would begin. The first day of class, we managed to get lost and ended up being late to class. To say that the training area is difficult to find is an understatement. My advice is to give yourself plenty of time to find the area before the first day of class. Our trainer's name was Lynn and we loved her. Not only was she knowledgeable about each breed in our class but was also very lively and a joy to be around. Each class gave us some excellent tips that actually worked. We were also assigned weekly homework, which really made our puppy into a little less of a terror to live with. Being in a class with a bunch of other new dog owners resulted in us all asking a lot of questions each week. It was also nice because you really felt like a community and it was nice to have a support group of sorts to go through this journey together. Lynn took the time each week to answer all of our questions and would often times end up going over our hour time slot to help us all with our dog training. Overall, we loved Lynn and our experience at The Canine Coach and will be back again. We did find the training sessions to be reasonably priced compared to other local competitors which was also a pleasant surprise. I just had my 3rd private session with Lydia and could not be more thrilled with how this is working out! My dog Shefu is a little terror on walks - pulling on the leash, barking at dogs, people, cars, her shadow, the pavement, etc. Today, in one session, she was walking next to me peacefully and wasn't yanking on the leash or going wild at passing cars. I feel confident I have the skills to keep our walks calm like the practice one we did today. Lydia is fantastic - she uses excellent metaphors in her training which cement the skill for me in a way that I won't forget what she said. I love this place! I've taken both of my dogs through level 2 there and one just finished their Canine Good Citizen class and will be taking Therapy Dog class in the fall. We've completed two sessions with the canine coach and have been really satisfied. The class times are convenient, and the instructors super helpful. I recommend getting your puppy into classes as soon as possible- Watson started at 10 weeks and I'm so glad! I wasn't particularly fond of our level 1 instructor, however. I LOVE the Canine Coach! I've taken just about all the classes I can with my dog, and plan on retaking the lure coursing and agility classes this summer. I've had a number of different trainers, and every one of them has been fantastic. I've even had to do a little in home training for kenneling/separation anxiety. While my dog isn't 100% (and I never expect him to be in this regard), his anxiety has definitely improved with the tips I received. I've recommended them to a number of friends, and everyone who has gone to training here has really liked them. Lydia is an honest-to-goodness miracle worker. In ONE private lesson, Lydia taught me training techniques that have transformed my lovable, but neurotic, miniature poodle-ish rescue pup from a barking, pulling nightmare into a loose leash walking pro. I still kind of can't believe it. Not only is she a whiz with dogs, she also excels at working with humans (probably the real key to her success, as I have much more to learn than my dog does). She is professional, punctual, and patient. She gives clear instructions and checks for understanding often - hallmarks of a great teacher. Plus, she is super nice.
