If Millisle's lacking in one thing, it certainly ain't newsagents. There's the Mace just a few doors down, another wee place further on up, and a Spar after that. What a place like this wants with more than one corner shop type place is beyond me, but out of the four, The Candy Box is my fave.
As Stephen mentioned in the previous review, it is a newsagents, but it has dozens of sweets and other confectionery, dulce (eugh...eating seaweed just isn't my thing), hot food to go (including pasties, sausage rolls, pot noodles and soup), drinks to go (tea and coffee), a small range of greetings cards and a few essential groceries. Oh, and the loveliest shopkeeper I've ever met. Super cheery wasn't in it.
The minute I walked in through the door, she greeted me and started a conversation on everyone's favourite topic in NI...the weather. [Unfortunately this bit was cut short due to a new customer entering the premises]. As I waited patiently for Ms Lovely Shopkeeper to do her thing, I scoured the walls for some form of sweet I could take home (my dad had recommended The Candy Box to me, and I was certain he was expecting sweets in return...), and settled on chocolate raisins. Yes, I'm a fan.
Mrs Lovely Shopkeeper was soon finished with the customer (she even apologised for my wait, bless her), and asked me what I would like. Chocolate raisins please...and yes, I'm a fan. She was slightly disbelieving, and said she liked chocolate peanuts herself, which I told her were my worst nightmare, not being a nut fan and all that. Twas a pleasant convo indeed.
The Candy Box deserves four stars for service alone. I've never come across someone so happy on such a gloomy day. Thanks lady. read more
