The Old Thatched Inn is a lovely old building dating back to 1702, but lovingly restored after a…read moremuch more recent fire. The front of the building is the original old rooms which have been knocked through to give a more intimate atmosphere, at the back of the pub is more recent and has a large modern conservatory which is nice, but can be noisier. The pub has decent traditional ales, and the wine list is good. It has about a dozen each of whites and reds, a couple of rose wines from around £12 to £37. There are about eight champagnes from around £18 to £100. Most people don't come here to drink, they come to eat, and the menu is varied with more fish dishes available on Friday. Starters range from around £5 to £7, mains £12 to £17, deserts about £5 to £7. We had homemade fish cakes with Salad and Homemade Tartare Sauce for £6.90 which were excellent and Gravadlax with Smoked Salmon Pate, Toast & Cress Salad which was the same price and tasty, but a little too oily for my taste, it would have benefitted from a good-sized wedge of lemon. We followed this by Roast Aylesbury Duck Breast, Confit Leg with Gratin Potato, Plum & Ginger Compote for £14.95 and Roast Local Rare Breed Lamb with Crushed Jerseys Royals, Marsh Samphire & Tomato: both were excellent and very tasty. We were flagging a little now, so we shared a portion of cheese and biscuits at £6.50: it was nice, but I've had better. Overall the wine and food are excellent and the staff and service are both very good. There is a reasonable sized car park, but as the place gets very busy (so best to book a table) and parking can therefore be a challenge. Highly recommended.

Open fires means that this really feels like and old fashioned inn. Off the beaten track a bit but worth a visit. It really caters for all types as well which is nice and perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

In a city with such little heart it's a blessing that somewhere so honest and true has prevailed,…read moreagainst all the odds. That somewhere is The Cricketers, Milton Keynes. Whilst my experiences here are limited to Thursday's "Curry Club", prior to the rugby last night, that singular experience transcended normality, taking me and my colleagues to formerly uncharted territory in terms of our gastronomic Weltanschauung. Besides the aforementioned Balti-Bonanza, the pub's kitchen produces food offerings covering all corners of the globe, including American, British, Italian and even fusion via their unique "Mix-it-up Buckets". Rarely in life do you find such culinary variety in one place. Lager lovers are very well served here as The Cricketers boasts Stella Artois, Carlsberg, San Miguel and Coors Light on tap - a line-up more impressive than the '98/'99 United team. From an entertainment perspective you'll find SIX fruit machines, a top quality Winmau Blade 4 dart-board (as used in BDO professional competitions), a pool table and many, many televisions. There truly are very few places on God's Earth that stir the soul in the way The Cricketers in Milton Keynes does. Bravo.

Returned to try this pub restaurant today after a long time away. A friend told me this week the…read morelast managers had done a bunk. The pub / restaurant has only been open for 3 days and the new management were very welcoming. The beer was well kept or so my husband told me - £3.60 fior a pint of Abbot seemed slightly expensive though. The food was good, my husband had butternut squash soup and I had a parfait of chicken livers. We followed with Roast Beef accompanied by horseradish sauce. I would have liked more gravy on my dinner and a little more beef but that was my only gripe. We shared the cheese plate for desert, 1 cheddar and 2 blue cheeses one of which was stilton, would have preferred only 1 blue cheese, came with two small slices of bread and some dried apricots. We had the last two beef available so I assume this is why the portion was small -the 1 slice was thick and pink and very tasty. £1.50 for sparkling water is pretty average and the large glass of rose wine was £5.50 but nothing special. We will definitely go back to try this again. We had a wonderful walk after lunch down the lane opposite where the beautiful village pond is awash with ducks and geese. Awaiting you is a bench in the shade uinder the tree.....Highly Recommended. There is also a house opposite the pub with a stand outside which sells fresh vegetables, plants and the best preserves and chutneys you have ever tasted all at great prices. Came home with a jar of pickled onions, a jar of red onion chutney and 3 salvia plants.
