My son was treated horribly and singled out frequently. A student who does not fit their definition of a model student is ridiculed and given no opportunity for growth. If I could, I would rate this school less than one (1) star. It's such a nightmare. The school camouflages its shortcomings with a technology-free zone, outdoor lunches, and gym classes in Central Park to hide its fundamental shortcomings of inadequate teaching and a subpar facility.

Pros - -reasonably healthy food options -lots of outside park time kids -no tech in the lower school (could be a con for many also) -nice community of parents Cons - bad for working parents. They cancel and cut days on a whim, with barely any notice. Their phase in schedule is 2 weeks of the kids only attending 1-3 hours of school. Same thing happens at the end of the year. We are required to attend many school events, often starting in the morning or midday. -no academics in kindergarten. The kids don't learn a single letter of a number and are therefore unprepared to attend school anywhere else should you choose to leave. -difficulty with admissions at other more academically oriented schools. We were offered spots if we agreed for my daughter to go through kindergarten AGAIN because she was so behind. The phone often went silent after telling the admissions person at prospective schools that we were coming from Rudolf Steiner. One said "better to just stick with that". Waldorf education seems amazing, until you try to interact with the rest of the world. -hiring of inexperienced teachers. Many issues arise when you have a bunch of teachers with 1-2 yrs experience. Which brings me to... -poor handling of children with any "differences" or challenges in reading, writing, speech, sensory issues, or emotional issues. Kids that are hyperactive, rambunctious or having a bad day get sent home. Parents of boys beware, it's mainly little men being tossed out of the classroom. We had to take our 3 yr son out because he was being sent home almost daily simply for not following along. It was happening to other boys in the class but it was just too damaging to continue. His confidence was getting destroyed and we were being tortured. Many friends had the same experience. They send your child home constantly, forcing you to eventually confront them and withdraw from the program. Then they keep the entire tuition and any reimbursed by the tuition insurance (the check goes to the school and they are supposed to hand it over....) In case this isn't abhorrent enough - When my daughter had Covid she suffered scary side effects. For weeks after, she couldn't sleep, had stomach pain, anxiety and couldn't regulate her body temperature. She took off her snowsuit one day before going outside because she was too hot. The teacher made her put it back on and sat her in the hallway alone for 45 minutes fully clothed, hat on, until I got there to pick her up. She was red and sweating. My daughter is super easy and had no disciplinary issues, yet she was treated this way when suffering. She was only 5 yrs old.... -messy politics and no leadership- the parents are always complaining about how poorly run the school is. We agreed so we left. In conclusion - if a Waldorf education is your one and only and you are also wed to Manhattan, you don't have much of a choice. But if you are just partaking because you think it's a sweet nature school, think again. Once you start here, your other options shrink and life will be harder should you change course.
