A friend of mine was going through a divorce, and she asked me to look up lawyers for a name change. I spoke to a couple of lawyers on yelp, and they explained to me, a name change is included in the divorce legal process. Her brother asked me to find out about a name change as well. I'm not going to use his real name, but let's just call him "Zuby." I used a real name of a friend in my review of the Funko store in Hollywood, and he was annoyed. "Zuby" was born in Korea, but became a US citizen in the mid-90's, at the same time he graduated high school. When he went through the process of being a US citizen, they asked him what his name was. Zuby didn't want to use his Korean name, but wanted to use "Zuby." They told him he would have to pay to use Zuby instead of his Korean name. Zuby decided to use his Korean name but they did him a favor and put "Also known as 'Zuby' on his Citizen certificate (N-565)." This favor worked in ways Zuby didn't realize. On his social security card id, it cleary said "Zuby" along with his Korean name. So, Zuby thought this made his American name official. Flash forward to 2022, California was requiring a real ID program, requiring California citizens to prove their identity. Zuby brought his N-565 to the DMV, and they explained to him that "Also known as" is not your legal name. So here we are, I'm on yelp looking for a lawyer for a name change. On yelp, there are several legal services to offer name change. One of them was EZ Name Change on yelp, and I used the yelp feature to consult. EZ Name Change quoted me $700 for the legal fee for the name change, $120 for the legal publication in a news paper of the name change, and $435 for the court fee. Eviction Defender in the state of California quoted me $400 for the legal fee of the name change. Most other lawyers were quoting me $499. I googled cheap name change, and Legal Zoom was asking for $149 for name change. I thought something was fishy, why did the prices for name change vary so much? I talked to a family friend's lawyer who happens to be Korean American and he told me the truth. Legal fees for name change are a scam. Even Legal Zoom is a scam, despite being the cheapest. You can do the legal paper work yourself, and here's how. There's 12 superior courts in Los Angeles county, google them and pick the one closest to you. On the specific superior court's website, type in name change in the search tool on the website. It offers you to either print out the paper work for name change, or create a profile to do the paper work yourself and then print the completed results. By creating a profile on the website, they offer a questionaire to fill out the paper work. Finish the questionaire, then print the paper work! And you saved $700! Or print out the paper work for name change and bring it to the Clerk's office at the superior court, and they will help you fill out the paper work! And you saved $700! The only fees you should be paying is the court fee- $435 and the publication of newspaper of your name change. This is where British Weekly comes in. At the clerk's office, they give you a list of newspapers in Los Angeles county that are acceptible in publication of your name change. This is required, and there's a big list. Los Angeles Times is asking $350 for a name change publication, Pasadena Journal is offering $300 for a name change publication, Eagle Rock Sentinel is offering $275 for a name change, and Arcadia Weekly was offering $120 for a name change. British Weekly was the cheapest. British Weekly was offering $85 for a name change publication. For name change or Doing Business As publication British Weekly is the cheapest! read more

I needed to publish my company's DBA since we opened up a new bank account. I found The British Weekly when I did a Google search. I had 10 days before my DBA had to be published, the deadline for BW's Saturday's paper comes with a Wednesday 12pm PST deadline, it was Thursday at 4PM and I needed it in before the next Saturday so I could make it within the 30-day window for DBA publications. I also used them for DBA filing. Most of the places on the list from the County Registrar's office seemed to link to the same website. The British Weekly appealed to me because they seemed to do more than push DBA listings - they are a legit publication and posted their fees on the website without any flashiness or unclear wording. I had filed the paperwork with the County on my own and emailed the British Weekly to ask about publishing the classified ad only for $30. I used the email link from their website and got a reply within the hour. I was told I could fax in my copy of the paperwork and call in with my credit card number, which I did the next day. When I called in I was helped by a nice man with a British accent (what else? LOL) who walked me through the whole process. Their deadline for the week was Wednesday 5/9 and I had called on 5/10. I was given the option of getting put into the current week's edition if I paid an extra $10 for the office to submit my listing to the publisher after the deadline. I declined, but I appreciated the offer. $10 for the extra work for the office was not a bad deal, but I was not in a hurry. This place is the best. I shopped around to finally submit my DBA (since I now finally needed this paperwork) and after reading a couple reviews on Yelp, I also decided to give this place a try. I own a leather accessories manufacturing and sales business that my partner and I started about 7 years ago.
