I am visiting from key largo, Florida and my wire came out of a bracket in the back so I called them.

I had an experience recently with Quartz Creek Dental in Kalispell that I've been thinking about,…read moreand I want to share it--not as a rant, but because it genuinely caught me off guard. I went in for a crown that had come off. Pretty straightforward. Before moving forward, I did what I always try to do when it comes to anything involving money--I asked questions. Specifically, I asked if the estimate they were showing me represented the worst case scenario of what I would have to pay out of pocket. I used those exact words: "worst case scenario." I was told yes. The estimate I was given was around $700 out of pocket. It looked clean. It looked thought through. It looked like someone had actually checked. So I moved forward. What I didn't know--and what I was never told--is that my insurance had changed at the beginning of the year and no longer covered crowns at all. Not partially. Not reduced. Just gone. So instead of around $700, I was billed $1,550. When I asked about it, the explanation I received was that they only verify whether insurance is active, not what it actually covers--unless the patient specifically tells them something has changed. That surprised me. Because somehow a system that only confirms "active coverage" was still used to produce a treatment plan showing a specific estimated insurance payment. And when I asked if that number represented the worst case scenario, the answer was still yes. If I had known that crowns were not covered, I would not have chosen that option. I would have asked about alternatives or waited until I understood my coverage. But I didn't--because I relied on what I was shown and what I was told. After receiving the bill, I contacted Quartz Creek Dental multiple times to ask a very specific question: whether they would honor what I was told--that this estimate represented the worst case scenario. I never received a direct answer to that question. Instead, the responses focused on disclaimers about estimates and that it is the patient's responsibility to understand their insurance coverage. What stood out to me wasn't just the outcome, it was how responsibility shifted. At the beginning, it feels like you're being guided through a decision. At the end, it becomes: it's the patient's responsibility to understand everything. Maybe that's technically true. But it raises a simple question: What exactly is the purpose of a treatment estimate if it doesn't reflect the actual coverage in place at the time it's created? To be fair, the dental work itself may be fine. But when it comes to the financial side, my experience with Quartz Creek Dental was that what was presented and what actually happened were completely different things. I relied on what I was told. That turned out to be a mistake. I won't be going back, and I would strongly recommend anyone considering treatment verify everything independently before making a decision. I changed dentists.
