I came in for a midnight showing of Chopping Mall. Concessions were cheap, as were the tickets. The theater wasn't packed, and all the attendees were equally excited to be there. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Prior to the showing, they played a bit of trivia in which moviegoers could win cool local art pieces. The bathrooms were clean, not very accessible as they were on the 2nd floor up a stairwell. I'm sure the building's age has something to do with that. I didn't ask for an elevator or sought out bathrooms on the ground level (I didn't see any), so I could be missing information. I will definitely be back for the following months' viewing.

Time to visit this theater again and see Dune!

Yet another theater I haven't gotten around to writing a review for back in the days when I ran a movie Meet-up Group. That project I got wrapped in was mostly a bust but I made an event here back in the day for the second Thor movie that came out. Needless to say that event was just a party of one. My final event which got scrapped due to illness on two fronts within the family was for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Which has just recently hit it's 20 year mark playing at this theater! That Meet-up up event seemed more promising but too much was going on personally to go through with it. So quite a few years went by after that and I realized just recently I didn't write a review for the Blue Mouse. I wanted a refresher so Steve and I went here and saw the new Dune. I was reminded what a great and historical theater this place is! And the movie was great too! As we left I felt I almost made a full circle as we were going out the door on Halloween weekend (of 2021) a huge line of people in costume to see Rocky Horror for the month of October. Lots of fun to see all of the costumes and gave me fond memories of pre covid times. They also do Friday night frights where they play a classic horror movie once or twice a month which looks like a lot of fun! This theater too would be a great place to do a 24 hour horror movie festival that is popular in some large cities for the month of October to that would be a really cool thing to see here!

SEVEN FOR $4 = $28, TAX INCLUDED! I stopped in here Sunday with my sister, my niece, her husband, their daughter, and her daughter's two friends, seven in all! We came in here to see "The Lego Movie 2". Not too surprisingly, the movie was fairly enjoyable for adults as well as kids. But getting back to the theater, tickets were only four dollars, with no extra coins for tax to slow down the theater line. But instead, the tax is included. This is the way all theaters used to be. But in later years. Most movie houses insist on charging extra for tax, instead of having it included in the "even Steven" price. This is one big reason why I all but quit going to theaters. Also, the treats also charge at even Steven prices (example: six dollars even, including tax, rather than $6.60). LOW TICKET PRICES/FESTIVAL SEATING As my sister explained it, the four dollar ticket price was a special matinee price. That is less than half what most theaters charge for tickets nowadays! Nevertheless, I believe the regular nightly rates are higher (see photo for ticket rates). One other thing, they still have festival seating (that is, just walk in and pick your seats) as opposed to assigned seating (which takes more time to pick a particular seat, while holding up a long line of people waiting to get tickets). But being that this is still a single auditorium cinema, I do not expect the Blue Mouse to become victim to assigned seating as that ploy was designed to keep kids from paying for one movie, but then going into an R-rated movie instead, in multiplexes. 92 YEARS CONTINUOUS OPERATION! The Blue Mouse Theater,'in the Proctor District of Tacoma, is a special place. It first opened in 1927 at the dawn of the "Soundies Age", And has been running continuously for the past 92 years! This is one of the last of the old-time single auditorium theaters, with no special parking lot of its own. However, street parking is not too difficult to get if you come at a time when it's not too busy, such as on a Sunday afternoon. But if you're coming say like on a Friday or Saturday night, I might recommend you get dropped off, or take the bus here instead. Also, the aisles need lighted "runway lights" to help people adjust their eyes to the darkness as they first enter the dark auditorium. BEHOLD THE GLORY! SEE PLAQUE But all in all, I liked the homey nostalgic feeling of this place. Any theater that has been running continuously since the Dawn of Sound is worthy of being tried out for that reason alone! BTW, the building that houses the theater is in the Tacoma Register of Historic Places, complete with a plaque mounted on one of it's brick columns.

    Love this theater!

I have been here a few times now for Fright Night, which is a monthly event where they show older horror movies for $5! I have now seen Lost Boys, Funhouse, My Bloody Valentine (uncut). You get the idea of what kind of horror films they play. They usually have a table at the stage selling prints, buttons, etc... The last few times the Pierce County Asylum come and are normally in costume related to the films showing and also tickets are prizes won during trivia prior to the film starring. Love audience participation! The theater is a local landmark and is in an area where parking on the street is plenty. I have never had a problem finding parking. There is a bar a cross the street of you want to prefunk prior to your movie. If you're hungry, the popcorn is freshly popped (rare occurrence I know) but that's the beauty of a non-chain theater. There is liquid butter offered, and various popcorn flavorings. The prices are way more reasonable and affordable than a chain theater, which is nice! The staff at the concessions and ticket window are very nice and patient! The venue itself is beautiful! A rarity from all the cookie cutter ones that have big seats, and recliners. So, you have no excuses to come and see a movie here. Support a local theater, go to Friday Night Frights (search for it on FB as that is their primary way to let you know when and what movie they will be featuring) where they start around 10pm, see Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturdays where it starts at midnight or come for an "older" newly released movie (only $5!!!!), or go see a new movie for $3 on Mondays or $4 on Tuesdays. Normal ticket prices are $5 for adults or $4 for minors and seniors. Just check out their site, they sell tickets online!www.bluemousetheater.com. As Siskel and Ebert would say: See you at the movies!

    Concession stand. Great price combos!

The footprint is huge, boasting 17 screens with a large arcade area and two concession areas. The theaters all have oversized, mechanically reclining chairs and amazing sound quality. Over the years, the place has been slowly falling into disrepair. They only use one of the two concession areas and a lot of that is automated. The chairs inside of the theaters are worn out or broken and some make terrible squealing noises when you recline them. The sound is still good, and they do offer discounted movies during the weekdays but overall, I liken the experience of seeing a movie here nowadays to the times when I went to the dollar movie theater back in the 90's. I don't feel like I'm viewing a feature in a state-of-the-art theater like I did when it was new. As with many things and places these days, the value isn't quite there but we've all been subject to dealing with things being just mediocre that we've just accepted it the way it is. There aren't too many options for me to see a movie on the big screen these days and this theater is close enough to my home that in most cases. It'll do however, that is said with hopes that things may change for the better someday. Who am I kidding right? Most theaters these days are filled with disrespectful people talking on their phones, bringing young children or just plain talking and making noise throughout the movie. I tend to stay home and watch on my TV and that is why this industry is a dying breed but every once in a while, I do like to try and enjoy a film in an actual theater and when I do, I'm usually doing it here. Thanks for reading, Cheers!

Visiting the Galaxy Theater in Gig Harbor has always been a bitter-sweet occurrence for my bride…read moreand me. It's a nice, clean facility, and there always seems to plenty of seats - which may say more for our taste in cinema than the lack of patrons for a particular showing. The staff are always pleasant, if not a little condescending when going into explicit detail about how to find your way to any one of the 11 screens - including the mighty and deafening IMAX Theater. (Basically, it's either left, or right.) After living here for over a decade, we had never seen a show at this IMAX, so we were excited about what we were about to experience for the premium price of around $50 for two adults - one who is just 6-months from getting that $2.00 senior discount. Those first 64 years was worth the wait. After receiving our navigation instructions from the teenager scanning our tickets, we took a dangerous detour to the counter where wine, beer, chicken fingers and burnt hotdog ends and very possibly marijuana is sold. We ordered a medium bag of popcorn (extra butter substitute) and two soft drinks. Being a slightly awkward grouping of containers, we asked for one of those thin, collapsable cardboard caddies. "OK. But they're twenty-five cents" the barkeep said in a way that made me feel dirty for asking. "Ok. I think I have a quarter in one of my pockets." I didn't want to use my debit card again after spending twenty-seven dollars on the sodas and popcorn. After cautiously sliding my lint-covered quarter across the counter towards the barkeep, he reached down and pulled a flat piece of the stiff beige paper up and in three seconds created an origami in the shape of an open-faced box and handed it over. Now we were prepared to be amazed by the IMAX that was looming at the end of the hall past the first five inferior screens filled with parents and toddlers in one and surly teens in the other. The IMAX with its large entrance area was devoid of any flat surfaces on which to rest our 25-cent caddy loaded with top-heavy sodas and popcorn when my better half asked me which seats we were assigned to. Of course, by this time, I had completely forgotten what the young man who scanned my ticket had told me, as it was all I could do to remember how to get there in the first place. With no table or chairs to rest the caddy and my wife unable to juggle that plus her handbag while also providing me with an array of good ideas about finding tickets and not forgetting seat numbers in the first place, I had to squat to the floor and set the caddy down, stand up again to find the tickets in the third pocket I checked. With that settled, I squatted unsteadily and recovered the origami holding our salty and sweet payload and stepped into the Amazing IMAX Theater. The first thing we noticed were the seats. Those sitting in them on the first row to our right looked so small - only heads, arms and legs were visible. No torsos. The cushions had collapsed to the point of nearly swallowing their occupants like an orange Venus Flytrap with an appetite for senior citizens. As we continued, we saw some seats that were empty, showing their cracked leather like something you'd find in a "57 Nash at a Pick and Pull. We made it to our seats closer to the top of the stands and found that the armrest had apparently been attacked by one Frederick Krueger. After swinging the old, stained wooden tray out of the way, I turned around and slowly descended into my seat. The experience lasted longer than it should have. I knew that after I had passed the point where I thought I should stop sinking and seeing my knees from an entirely new perspective, I was probably going to yell "I've sunken in an IMAX seat and I can't get up!" The horsehair or whatever was used to stuff these seats was likely gleaned from the unfortunate casualties in the Civil War. The leather-like material covering them was a wrinkled mess reminiscent of a very old elephant's derriere, and to complete the horror of it all, there were no toggle to press to recline and/or raise one's legs like the other 10 screens at the Gig Harbor Galaxy. This - was just - a chair. The Mighty IMAX struck out with this patron. But Elvis was the best 90-minutes I've spent watching anything for a while. The popcorn was pretty good, too. The origami caddy is on my kitchen counter waiting to be used another day.
