I have always been impressed with the service here; the staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is large, although I don't like the way that it is written on boards all around the room instead of on paper menus, as it feels like you're leaning over people who are having their meal just to see what food there is! We have some had lovely lunches there, it is really nice sitting in the small beer garden at the back looking out over the countryside on a sunny afternoon. The meals are not overly expensive, and although the portions aren't huge they are probably just right for most appetites. The pub is very popular and most people I know have dined there at some point; I've never heard a negative review of the place. Although I wouldn't say it is my favourite place to eat in the area, it's well worth a look.

Everyone commented how well the food was cooked, and as a bottle of wine for two was part of the deal, we only paid £12.50 each for a rump steak, lovely fat chips and trimmings as well as a half a bottle of Hardys wine each. The staff were very friendly and the service couldn't be beaten. We enjoyed ourselves so much we are going back on Wednesday to sample the Curry Night. The new owners of the Hamilton Russell are very pleasant and it is obvious they have a will to improve things. If they keep on producing good food at a good price like we have recently sampled they have 11 converts. Well done the Hammy.

Toby Carvery was recommended by friends and really wish they hadn't. Restaurant was extremely busy with huge queues however we were seated fairly quickly, about 5 minutes. Queued for about 15 minutes to get to the Carvery. A normal carvery is £9.49 with a choice of 4 meats, plus a Yorkshire pudding and as much Veg as you want. As I'm not big on Veggies I plumped for the King Size Sunday Lunch which, for an extra £1.49, comes with an extra Yorkie, 2 sausage and more Carvery meat. First of all the amount of meat I got, bearing in mind I paid for the King SIze, was pathetic, one thin small slice of gammon, and one thin small slice of beef. The fat and gristle content of the meat was around half of the meat I got. To really rub my nose in it, the lady sat on the next table had a regular size lunch and has more than twice the meat I had. The extra sausages were tiny, unidentifiable white fatty things. The yorkshires were huge, but very oily and bland. I'm a big fan of yorkies as I don't do veggies much so the fact I couldn't eat one let alone two is testament to how awful they were. Gravy was also bland, couldn't taste much meat in there and was very thick, almost like they'd overdone the bisto... Roasties are one of the few veggies I eat and was looking forward to the goose fat roasties, however they were just dull and couldn't eat more than half of one. My wife also didn't enjoy her meal either. The only two positive points were that my son ate for free, as he only really does veggies and yorkies so he was happy to eat from his mums plate, and also if you get a Pepsi brand drink there are free refills at the self service machine. A small point about the bill and service, our entire contact with the waitress consisted of "Everything OK with your meal?" and "Can I get the bill for you". I usually tip but on this occasion the food was awful and the service was literally those two comments therefore I didn't leave a tip this time, for which I got such fithy looks from the four waitresses chatting and checking their phones at the till. Whilst waiting to pay they one of the waitresses was trying to bully a girl into leaving a tip. The girl was about 13 and had clearly been sent to pay by her parents with their debit card, the waitress kept pushing her to add a tip to the card payment but the young girl was clearly distressed by this and kept looking to her parents for instruction , who obviously weren't looking or couldn't hear her. I don't know if she added a tip but if she did she was pushed into it by a very belligerent waitress. I will definitely not be visiting Toby Carvery Wolviston again, and only wish I had visited KFC or McDonalds instead as I was still hungry after we left. It is a shame there isn't the option for a 0 star review as the food we got wasn't even worthy of 1 star (the minimum you can give a review). Recommendation? Anywhere but here, even McDonalds.
