The George and Dragon is a pubin Heighington Village, which is located outside of Darlington. It is a traditional pub with a friendly atmosphere. It offers excellent food at a reasonable price. Since this pub has recently changed owners I have been many times for meals. They are friendly and look after you very well. The food is incrediably cheap considering the quality - everything is cooked from fresh - no ping in the microwave here! Here you pay about the same as any other pub grub, but you get much more for your money. They have imaginative dishes (e.g. Draculars Downfall - a garlic laced dish!). You can sit in the conservatory or in the pub depending on your preference. read more

Sunday Lunch - Good staff service but very rude management (even though meal was bad and I didn't complain!!), very dry overcooked and bland food. Whole meal was impossible to eat. Yorkshire puds were rock solid, and no flavour even with gravy and stuffing. Would not go back unless they changed management and chef. read more

Now much improved under the new owners. It took them a little while to settle in but they do seem to be trying very hard. The weekday meal deals are great value. In response to the previous comment they now have new dining room padded leather chairs that are very comfortable. read more

My wife and I now living in York meet up with friends from Newcastle on a regular basis. After trying a number of pubs we went to the George & Dragon and were so impressed by the quality of the food and the friendly and helpful attitude of the staff that we have been returning there every month for the last 8 months. It is very refreshing to find a pub providing a very comfortable and relaxed environment which offers a well balanced menu of excellent quality at such reasonable prices. Went this evening (08/12/2011) to celebrate my son being accepted as a torchbearer to the 2012 Olympics and honestly was disgusted with the way the chef treated us. I ordered a sirloin steak but asked for it to be medium with no onions as am allergic. I ordered a peppercorn sauce and asked the owner if it came with onions to be told no so ordered this as well. When my food came out the chef had put the onion rings on top of all of the food, so I sent it back, when the waitress brought the 'new steak' she then informed me the peppercorn sauce came with onions as well. I was then told I could wait for the chef to make it fresh if i wanted but by then my food would have been cold. I then cut into the first steak and it was rare. So I sent it back the kitchen for them to rectify they then recooked a fresh steak and did some peppercorn sauce. When the new steak came out it was burnt but by this time I was that hungry I covered it with the peppercorn sauce and ate it. The waitress asked me if I wanted a side salad with just rocket lettuce, peppers and tomatoes I said I would. Big mistake the peppers had been cut by a knife that had been used to cut the onions. Honestly the waitressing staff at the George and Dragon are exceptional they did there absolute best but the current chef they have is absolutely useless. read more

went in for the first time this saturday 2nd october now under new management.Was friendly bar staff and the menu seemed excellent reasonably priced but we were put off by the uncomfortable dining type chairs that were provided .My advice to manager would be to provide comfortable seating and you will double your clientelle and definitely sell more meals . read more

we chose this pub as it is dog friendly- the pub is traditional and charming with a homely atmosphere,the food was excellent value for money and our meal was cooked to perfection.The staff were friendly, we certainly recommend the george and dragon. read more
