It was nice how all the employees greeted each other and to hear many employees have been employed 6-7 years out of the 8 years of being opened. Even the residents greeted us and spoke very highly of Rose Wood. The facility was extremely clean and the air was not masked by any perfume sprays. Resident apartments were spacious and with lots of natural light. Each floor has its own cleaning service team. We were able to view laundry being delivered to resident rooms. It was nicely folded or ironed placed on hangers. It was nice to see residents actually getting their own belongs returned to them. My father lives at Linden House now. He has been there a year. The first 6 months he was still self…read morecare, remembered to bathe and change his clothing. However, his bed was hardly ever made and trash would pile up. I complained once about this to the director, I saw a brief improvement, and then a few Covid cases hit the facility and both staff and residents were affected. Residents were having to eat in their rooms on disposable plates and food and trash were piling up. I live close by, so I would go frequently and clean his room, putting the trash in bags piled up outside his door. After all of this was over, and things settled some, I did see things getting somewhat better, at least with trash pickup. When norovirus hit the facility in February, my father's dementia was already worsening. He had an incident of diarrhea in the dining room. He continued to not be able to make it to the bathroom in his room, and the staff did an excellent job of taking care of him and cleaning him up, and cleaning his room and carpet. We were told several residents had the same symptoms. My husband and I were concerned and visited with gloves and masks. We expressed concern about the caretakers and other residents, because no one was placed in isolation and my father continued to go to the dining room even though his symptoms lasted several days. His aids told us that the isolation of residents needed to come from their superiors. At this point, my father's dementia worsens weekly, and we have a schedule, with the staff to help him bathe and change his clothing 3 times a week. We feel we have to continually keep on top of it, because I find that if I relax at all, my father will not get bathed or get his clothing changed. I have found that doing my father's laundry myself, has been very telling. One week he went 5 days without a change of clothes even though he had showered. Anytime I suggest that maybe more caretakers are needed on day shift to get everything done, I am told that they have plenty of staff, and they will be "spoken to". The director and director of wellness have both stopped answering my emails. Another concern to think about if considering the Linden House is physical safety. As my father's dementia has worsened, and he has no idea that the pendant around his neck can be pushed for help, and as his knee continues to hurt and give out on him, and he forgets that he needs to use a walker, we requested he be monitored closer. We asked if we could put a non recording video with audio in his bedroom, in case he falls during the night, someone (my husband and myself), would hear him calling out. We were told the policy is we could have a non recording video, but no audio. Well, that would defeat the whole purpose, because we would have the audio in our room at night, while we were asleep, so we could hear him call out. Just like you would use a baby monitor. The compromise was that he would get every two hour checks. Our problem is trusting that the checks will actually happen, since there seems to be very little oversight to patient care. As to why we don't move him. #1 he is only 5 minutes from my house, #2 it would be very hard for him to move to a new place with his worsening dementia and he seems happy at Linden House. He doesn't notice not changing clothing or his bed not made, or if he doesn't get a shower. #3 there would be no guarantee that the grass would be greener anywhere else. I will just have to resolve the fact that I must keep on top of things and people will listen. Some good things about Linden House: I have found the aids to be kind and seem to know my father. The physical therapists and occupational therapists are awesome and excellent!!

Before throwing her out they forced me to stay in her room with her twice saying they would throw her out if I didn't come stay with her, and then a couple days later the head CNA called me at 10:30 am on a Tuesday to say come get her NOW --that she was out! After that my mother then stayed at my house for 6 months until Christmas of 2020 when OLOP took her back, but only in the locked memory care facility. After a year and a half of her doing well in memory care--not belonging there at all--after many meetings I was able to get her moved back to assisted living. In the meantime we had paid a lot more money per month for memory care. When she was moved from one type of care to another they charged us a full month's rent in both places (to and from) because of their "30 day notice policy". So we paid double rent twice while she was there because of their policy even though they were initiating the moving each time She did very well in assisted living until the summer of 2023 when they neglected to keep her on her meds--saying it wasn't their job. She became agitated off her meds and without more than 2 meetings in a short period of time they moved her back to memory care--and again charged us double rent because of the lack of a 30 day notice. She went crazy then not being on her med and being locked up and threatened to climb over the fence and leave. Even though she was 90 plus at the time they said she was a flight risk and that by saying she was leaving she had "discharged herself". They threw her out with no place left to go and no place she could afford in Charlottesville after taking most of her retirement money. They told me as she left they would be willing to take her back if "she changed". Bottom line--they care about their liability and money. Not much compassion that I saw, except for the social worker. I hate to name names but most of the people who were working there in 2023 are still in charge now in 2026. If your parent has plenty of money, is docile and doesn't need much meds or care--send em there.

After looking at a few places in Charlottesville, I found Commonwealth had the room space I needed since I would be there with him everyday. They told all the things that they offered and what they would do to fix the room as I wanted to make me feel that he was safe there. I moved him in the middle of June, after about 2 weeks I took him out because they had not lived up to their promises. Crazy me I took him back. It only got worse. They have one lady that lived there that took most of the staffs time, she touched about all the forks, knives and cups put on the tables, she would try to fight staff or throw them at them if they tried to stop them. They let everyone do their thing without letting staff correct them. I went 3 days in a row and they didn't even know which room or where my husband was. Some mornings he wouldn't even get the right amount of meds if I wasn't there. The cleaning was a joke, I told them not to come back I would clean myself. They are really short on staff, the staff never seemed to communicate with each other. I ended up having to pay a medicine bill for $97 that I never approved since I delivered all my husbands meds from home delivery, I was told every month they would take care of it and never did. It took me about 3 months to get with I was promised when I signed up there. Yes, I or my son was there everyday from about 9am to 6:30pm and I did everything for my husband because the staff couldn't hardly keep up with the others with all the other duties they had that had nothing to do with patient care except giving them the food furnished and cleaning up dining area. I would not recommend this place for anyone that cares about their loved ones when they can't do for themselves. Biggest mistake I ever made.

On July 31, 2016, my mother passed away at Golden Living (formerly The Cedars) in Charlottesville…read more Since December 17, 2015, she had been in and out of the ER 5 times, in and out of the hospital 4 times, and in and out of Golden Living 4 times. At age 91, she was having a series of medical issues, including a couple of surgeries, and she needed care 24/7. As an only child, I found myself being the caregiver, and, knowing my own limitations in terms of being able to deal with everything, I made the decision to have her remain at Golden Living for her last several months, where she was also under hospice care. It was not in the cards for her to return to her home unless she had someone (preferably a registered nurse) on duty 24/7. That was cost prohibitive as well as opening a can of worms. My mother would never have trusted a stranger in her home. Sometimes, as people age, they mellow out, and sometimes they become more difficult. My mother had always had a certain sense of independence, from family, from friends, from the world in general. She never wanted to socialize. She never wanted company. She had rather strict demands. In short, she was difficult, and she made no apologies for being that way. How does any institution deal with someone like this? Are there miracle workers in the field of gerontology? Yes, I believe there are. Except for a couple of long weekends away from Charlottesville between December 17, 2015 and July 31, 2016, I made appearances at Golden Living at least twice a day and sometimes three and four times a day. For weeks, when my mother could eat a regular meal, I brought her breakfast: a Hardee's biscuit with double butter cut in half, and then I would bring from home a Roma tomato which I cut in quarters. That's what she wanted. That's what I brought to her. She eventually could no longer eat solid food, so I am sure the folks at Hardee's wondered what had happened to their standard order. Did my mother appreciate that I did what I did? Yes, on some level, but then she was never one to gush thanks. So what about the miracle workers? At any institution there are people who have, so to speak, 9 to 5 mentality. They are there for the next paycheck. I can honestly say that I never encountered any people at Golden Living with 9 to 5 mentality. Over the course of seven months, I got to know many of the employees, from the people who swept the floor to the people in the kitchen to the aids to the nurses to the managers of different departments. Each and every time I encountered any of them, they were pleasant and smiling and cooperative and willing to do anything that needed to be done, and, with my mother, there was always something that needed to be done. My mother often would not ask a nurse or aid for help. She waited until I arrived so she could have me fetch what she needed. I would then seek out someone to help. On many occasions I would arrive in her room to find a nurse or aid talking one-on-one to my mother and giving her encouragement. When my mother was not aware that I was there, I would hear her saying some things that could be taken in a very negative way by someone who was not trained in the field of gerontology. I would take things my mother said more personally than they would, and they would just say "she didn't mean it". There are lots of options out there for facilities that deal with the elderly. I looked into several of those facilities. I knew my mother was not a "fit" for most of them, especially those that were state-of-the-art with rather rigid requirements for meals in the dining room, required exercises, etc. My mother wanted to stay in her room. She wanted things "just so". It took the miracle workers at Golden Living to deal with my mother in this most difficult time. The miracle workers at Golden Living had to deal with me as well, and I cannot thank them enough. I could hug several of the people at Golden Living without feeling embarrassed. I could cry on their shoulders when I needed to let it all out. Thank you - the miracle workers of Golden Living - for all that you have done for my mother and for me. I will be forever grateful.

I was giving her time to decide if she wanted to pursue legal action but as with everything/everyone in the medical profession, especially when it comes to old people, she thinks they are all untouchable... After having been unceremoniously kicked out of MJH way too early after a second back surgery (see review for Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital), and during a snowstorm, she was dumped in this cesspool of a place. At Golden it seems as if she was just tucked away in a room and administered the antibiotics but seem as if they have otherwise written her off. The day of her admission no one came to talk to her- a week later, we still had yet to see a doctor. Only after emailing the man in charge of the center did we get any acknowledgement and a few days later, the doctor finally made an appearance. Which, by the way, was the only time we saw him the whole six weeks she was there. Basically when he showed up he acted like here was no reason for him to be there and asked what we wanted... uh, how about an idea of what's going on. My mother was just dumped off here one day and hasn't talked to anyone since. During her time there, so many things happened that had me wondering if this place wouldn't end up killing her. As a diabetic, she had to have her levels monitored regularly, which they weren't and when they were would return crazy numbers... tracking of her vitals and SUGAR, which by the way, [sugar] should be checked TWICE a day EVERY DAY, was inconsistent at best which is extremely disconcerting, especially when she is running crazy varying sugar levels of 300 one night, 400 another, 71 a few days prior, 200 one morning... ect... yet at no time did they ever modify her insulin, of which the administration was spotty at best; at one point, someone even took HER OFF her insulin! When asked about any meds, especially pain, when they were late, again, sometimes almost as much as two hours they would just say, well the pharmacy is all the way upstairs and they weren't going back up just yet ... so much or pain management. The bathroom went almost a week with piss in the same spot; no cleaners... when accessing her port, some of the nurses refused to use gloves or wear a mask... they also used the same flush syringe for before AND after treatment... and they had no idea how to feed diabetics which probably contributed to her crazy sugar levels. Also while there she had very bad thrush no one wanted to treat... and remained very confused about her situation, or what to expect. It was also another full week if not more before anyone even tried to clean her up, let her take a shower, or, even check her suture sight... Perhaps among the worst of all... there were a couple of times when the 'tailored' antibiotic she was receiving came to her with an expiration date of one to two days!! Now TH She was also put there for rehab... granted the PT personnel there are for the most part very good, they had her doing things that she probably shouldn't have been doing; something later reinforced/reiterated by her PT therapists at the gym. But, that's not on them because they only follow doctor's orders as prescribed which didn't seem to have any consideration for her condition. Because words are limited here, I wanted to address a couple of angels we ran in to that probably had some small part in saving her life, and sanity... I would be remiss in NOT giving credit where credit is due and sharing that there are some staff persons there who have been very good, and some who have been great and with whom she is fond. She liked her Physical Therapists and even has some of them on board trying to press the matter of her still being there despite her independence and minimal needs at . One is even the person in charge of that department. My personal favorites there are Christine and Rob. Rob seems like a kind soul and he earned my favor when I was watching him with her one day and he said, "Smile Mrs. Ward", to which she replied, "F*&k you" and he would just the cutest little grin on his face. LOL It was a cool transaction to witness and only those how know my mom know not to take it offensively, of which he seemed to be aware. Ya gotta love my momma. There are also a couple of nurses who are very good and who if they were her caregivers for the remainder of the time I would be perfectly at peace with, as would she... Becky and my personal favorite, Crystal. There is a particular CAN whose name is that mother was quite fond of as well. She would make her bed and went out of her way to make my mother smile. Thank you to them for helping us and I hope they can continue their mission of mercy in that institution, as they are probably the saving graces for a few others as well.
