This was my fourth visit to the Blacksmith and as such, this rating is averaged out. Unfortunately our experience last night would have been closer to a two.
Saturday nights are quite busy nights at the Blacksmith. With few gastro-pub options in the area, this was to be expected. We had made a booking and we were placed downstairs in the bar area (which we had no problem with) but a bit awkwardly sandwiched between the maitre'd station (on the corner of the bar) and the stairs. Still, our welcome was friendly enough and after placing our order at the bar, we squeezed our way past waiting customers and took our seats.
The first issue arose when, despite ordering literally seconds after each other, the food arrived at vastly different times. The ribs arrived first, followed ten minutes later by the shepherd's pie and then it was a full half hour (plus a visit to the bar to check later) before the salmon dish arrived. Wait staff apologized, with two different excuses; that the different meals took different times to cook (an issue that many restaurants do not seem to struggle with) and/or that ordering separately had meant that the orders weren't put through at the same time. The latter is understandable but we are talking about three orders within two minutes put in under the same table number.
The food, as it arrived, was a mixed bag. The ribs were a generous half serve and well-marinated. The shepherd's pie was adequate, if erring on the bland side. Much to the disappointment of my patient salmon-eating friend, she found it a little over-roasted and underwhelming. We decided to skip dessert and further drinks at the bar.
Both other times I have been for dinner there have been forgotten or late meals, although none quite as poorly timed as last night. I've had no problem with service or quality when I've eaten here for lunch. My recommendation? Hit here for lunch or after-work drinks but look elsewhere for a dinner with friends. read more
