The staff are always friendly, professional and helpful. The food is always amazing quality from rolls at lunch to the best chicken pie in the evening. We turned up without a booking just wanting a summer time drink but when we asked if we could possibly have a table they managed to fit us in. During lockdown we visited several times. My third venture into Epping brought us to this little pub, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It was a Tuesday night and we had signed up for the quiz night. The plan was to have a bite to eat and then take the quiz prize for the Northerners (2 Geordies lasses and one Scouser/Mancunian). Theydon Oak, is a traditional pub with a nice selection of beers on tap, uneven floor surface, ceiling beams, antiques along the walls, all the things that add to a boozer with a rich history. On the quiz front, we came third (no not out of three teams' lol). But on the food front, it was a big win. I opted for the Fillet Steak, as I was intrigued to see if they could match the Londoners, and they did. Firstly, it was a proper portion, although 8oz, it felt bigger. Cooked perfectly to order (medium rare) and really tasty. I partnered this with Diane sauce (cream, sherry, mushrooms and onions) and fries. Helen had the pub menu staple item of a burger and Sam had chilli con carne served with basmati rice which was interesting choice. There could have been a little more sauce with the chilli, but it was tasty enough with the mixed peppers and kidney beans. These were washed down with Sauvignon Blanc, Rioja and Moretti beer. Service is informal and friendly. They are obviously used to regulars, but were very welcoming to us. We felt like we had known them and the other quizzers for ages, possibly because were a little bit jolly for a Tuesday eve. Pricing is reasonable with the Fillet steak being the most pricy thing at £19.95 and totally worth it. It's a shame this place is so far away from me, as I could see myself popping by for an after work drink or dinner on a lazy eve when I don't want to cook. I am definitely up for trying their Sunday roast at some stage, which is £18.95 for a four course set menu! To summarise, if you live in Essex or even Hertfordshire, you must go!

When I queried why we had not been telephoned I was told, again in a very aggressive manner, that they did not have my number and was I not listening, they would not serve us and he slammed the phone down. A week or so later I visited the pub, as I often have after playing golf' to be greeted by Mr. Kirtley appearing from the back of the pub in a totally aggressive, intimidating and frightening manner shouting and swearing at me to, "Get out of my pub or I will throw you out". He subsequently manhandled me to the door and threw me to the ground injuring my hands. I later suffered chest pains and was taken by ambulance to A&E, where I spent around five hours having tests. I know Mr Kirtley has lost his brother and for that he has my sincere condolences, we have all lost friends and relatives but don't react so violently. This sort of behaviour is not acceptable particularly to someone who has been a loyal and supportive customer over many years. Lastly, I still have no idea what upset him. Steer clear is my advice!!

The mustard to go with the chips hit harder than a pimps slap. The chicken sandwich my friend got was good. Chicken very crispy and joined with chips. I went with Gammon steak with peas and chips and it was a good pick. Then to close it up we went with several pudding options and tea to cap off a great meal. Obviously the landlord and landlady had moved on as was their aim. Henry, no doubt, playing golf. However, the people that have taken over have kept my favourite pub as it should be. Good, friendly, professional service with a smile. The smile is something that is missing these days in the catering trade. As it was a nice day this gave me the opportunity to sit outside on the decking area and take in the view of the green. With my bestie having packed up and left London for leafy Epping, it was clear that Essex in general, would become a regular haunt; and it has. The George and Dragon has a nice local feel. All ages roll up for drinks, food and banter. I have been here several times, even had my new years' eve drinks there which was nice. Finally on a Saturday afternoon we wanted to recover from the night before with a hearty lunch! You should definitely note that from Monday to Friday until 6pm, they have a great fixed price lunch with £12.50 for two courses or £15.50 for three courses. Well worth it. Unfortunately it being the weekend, we missed out on this saving (sad face). The restaurant is not expensive though, it is reasonably priced. In terms of space, it is very cosy and warm. To the rear, they have outside seating for the warmer months. We opted for two courses to help us recover from our La Sala shenanigans. Delicately fried salt and pepper squid with aioli was my starting off point, gorgeous. I followed up with sticky chicken marinated in lemon, honey and chilli sauce, roquito peppers (which I love) and French fries. The chicken was a little bit dry, but generally it was ok. My Essex champion had deep friend Somerset brie with an apricot and cumin chutney. Unfortunately, her cheese had not been cooked enough and could have been a bit more gooey. For mains, it was the beer-battered cod fish finger sandwich with tartare sauce. This brought a smile to her face, as it was good. The service was prompt. The place had a good buzz with a half full restaurant of dining folks. They say it is the people that make the place. Every time we have been here, the bar team have been suitably cordial. We never need over the top in your face service, but the odd smile and attentiveness is welcomed. On this occasion, our waiter was miserable. He acted like he wished he was somewhere else, as did we, as this put a dark cloud over my first dining experience here. Having heard friends rave about how amazing the food was, I only saw glimpses of it on this occasion. Maybe this was an isolated day or perhaps we were psychologically affected by our bored waiter. Regardless, this is not the last you will see of me. I will be back to get me some of that outstanding food and service my local friends have been promising me.
