About a week ago I went in here because I collect oddities and also comics (in fact, I used to be a…read morecurator of a comics museum in NYC). After a quick walk through of the store, I noticed that my boyfriend was looking through a selection of books- they were all part of a series, and neither of us had seen them before. As I looked through the titles and flipped through some of the pages, I started to think that some of these books would be good gifts to bring back to my friends in NYC. Naturally, I started looking more carefully at the titles, trying to decide which of these books would be suited for my each of my friends. We were probably there looking at the books for maybe 5-7 minutes (if that) when the owner/proprietor/sales clerk came up, asked if we needed help and then grabbed one of the books from my hands, saying that this is not a library (and I know the difference between a library and a store, since I'm a professor and going to libraries is kind of a thing that I do on a regular basis). It is very hard to determine whether a book is worth buying without skimming through the pages.... I was actually about to buy that book by the way, but I was so shocked at how rudely I was treated that I walked out and continued my way to the National Galleries. This was my first experience in Edinburgh, but thankfully the rest of the city was very warm and kind.

It is basically a walk in warehouse. It offers comics, toys, action figures, DC & Marvel figurines and has a growing number of customers worldwide. Buying comics can be a bit of an emotional minefield and not one I know a great deal about but the folk in here seem to know what they are talking about and do all they can to help you. They know my friend in there by name, which probably says more about him than it does about them :) Red Hot Comics has a real growing reputation amongst comic book lovers in Glasgow.

I've managed to get nearly every issue of Hellblazer from here, so is the first target of any comic collector in Aberdeen. The owner has an encyclopedic comic knowledge, and is always happy to give advice. The shop's the only one I've been to that also has regular signings from people in the comic industry. Artists such as David Lloyd (V for Vendetta), D'israeli (Stickleback), John McCrea (Hitman, The Boys) and Mike Colins (Captain Britain) are regular visitors, as well as writers like Mike Carey (Hellblazer, X-Men, The Unwritten, Lucifer) and Ian Edginton (Stickleback). In a final note, the owner's dachshund (Captain), is also famous, having appeared in Garth Ennis's The Boys spin-off Highland Laddie.

I honestly couldn't tell you what the owner of the shop looks like only that he seems to be a myth that makes the orders and doesn't get the correct product in as I don't think any new Magic the Gathering sets have been bought in about a year and I am having to resort to going online which I don't want to do as I like supporting local buisness. The other two members of staff seem slightly more reliable in their knowledge so the owner can make sensile decisions. I feel that if a few minor changes were made the shop would be a vast improvement.

The first book I picked up (which was on display with a few others in the middle of the shop) had crushed papers and mouldy pages with a £20 price tag, and trust me, this guy did not seem like the haggling type. The boxes were also soggy and mouldy which was another red flag. The person I was with is an expert collector and had been carefully looking through the comics when the man sitting behind the desk (with his friends drinking at 2pm) started yelling something about being careful with the comics which we responded with "yes of course" because obviously we didn't want to overstep. We moved to a different section that didn't look as damaged and were yelled at again, this time extremely aggressive and rude saying he was going to throw us out if he has to tell us again and stood up as if he was going to shoo us away!! He literally said "I'm trying to have a chat with my mates" as if we were a hassle buying his comics!! We had already put a couple less damaged ones to the side and asked if they take card so it was obvious we were going to buy something and not just hanging around. We thought he was joking until he got more aggravated. We left immediately after. I don't know where all of the 5 stars on this place has come from but there's definitely something fishy about this place. And if another (nicer) employee works there than god bless them for keeping their business going. Forbidden Planet is worth the trip after such a sour one. If only no stars was an option.

Whilst this branch is a lot smaller and smarter than the original Edinburgh branch on Cockburn Street, it still stocks a cracking selection of CDs, DVDs, box-sets, graphic novels, books and tee-shirts. There's no listening booths unfortunately, but a lot of the new releases come with written descriptions and the staff are usually willing to play certain album if you ask nicely. As for the stock, we're talking fantastic compilations, back catalogues, re-issues and new releases for bargain basement prices. With great Blondie, Human League, Cocteau Twins, Nick Cave, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Bob Dylan remasters for £3 each, I defy any fanatical music or film fan to come out with less than half a dozen goodies!
