Avoid. It's a shame that one of Edinburgh's last independent comic book stores is run by a bitter, rude drunk who actively sabotages his own community and business. Although it feels sacrilegious to write in this time of chain stores, but this place deserves to close.
I decided to ignore the bad reviews and take my son to get his first comic book. I hoped to introduce him to the amazing world of comics in a place that had some history. What we saw was a store reeking of smoke with the owner pished out of his mind and his friends clogging the tight space. Fine. I reasoned to myself that you have to get used to some colour? I tried to find a comic for my son, but the place was so disorganised, I had to ask for help. The clearly inebriated owner's only advice was not to read Spider-Man because "they made him gay now". The rest of the encounter was shambolic and uncomfortable with the owner clearly showing he barely cared about running the shop at all.
I still purchased a comic because I'm an idiot who avoids confrontation and my son was so looking forward to this.
Honestly, I wasn't going to write anything because I was so embarrassed that I hadn't spoken up (in a room full of sloshed old guys who were using the store as a near hotbox and bar to be fair to myself). However, these guys give actual counter culture comic book heads a bad name. Shame on them, shame on the owner.
You may think like I did that it's important to support independent comic book businesses, but all this place supports is the continued bad habits of a backwards old man with a chip on his shoulder who couldn't give less for the next (or current) generation of comic book lovers. read more
