Heard some great things about the place and was excited to try it out! Went online and placed an…read moreorder for delivery that estimated our food would arrive in an hour. The site said you must place a delivery order with a minimum of £20, so we made sure to order enough food to meet the requirement! After an hour had passed they called and said our order was ready but the minimum delivery fee was £30. When I explained over the phone that the website had a lower price listed, they said the "website hadn't been updated". The price or the outdated site wouldn't have been a problem, it was just a bummer to wait an hour to find out that there was a lack of communication on their end... Needless to say, we didn't get to try the pizza tonight :(

Q: Can I write an entire review in childish innuendo?…read more A: Probably not, but I will certainly try. I love The Cock. (heh heh) We entered The Cock on a Saturday evening, so that its delicious sausages might enter us; the sausages come highly recommended. I had the herbed sausage and my wife had a different kind I don't recall. The herbed sausages are packed with huge flavor, so if you're someone who likes a bit more subtlety to their food, probably not the choice for you. I went even bigger by getting the Hemingford mash, which is seasoned with mustard and horseradish; two things I don't normally go for but with the bold peppercorn sauce was fantastic. The whole juicy platter was flavor overload and I loved it. What was possibly even more impressive was the wine list. I have not seen a better wine list at a pub in England -- and it's even better than most restaurants. The pub owners love the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and the wine list is a tour of the area. The list has several dozen wines, and really showcases the diversity of Languedoc. I learned a lot by just looking through the list. The bottle prices are very reasonable as well with minimal markup over retail. The bottle we ordered was on the menu for 25 Pounds, but retails for about 12, a very very reasonable markup. The wine was fantastic as well. If there is one downside, it's that I think this place falls squarely into the restaurant pub category. As a local drinking pub, it's far from the best. Only 4 ales on tap and not a great choice for lager as an alternative. The "pub" side of the house was a bit small as well, and not terribly conducive to stand-up drinking since the bar itself is pretty small. It will do, but come here for the food in the restaurant, not the drinking atmosphere. We can't wait to come back and get some more of The Cock!

I went for the lamb and the other half couldn't resist the temptation of sausages with Hemingford mash (mustard and horseradish) and onion gravy. In the center of town on high Street, I found this place. There's a small seating area inside, just big enough for a few (maybe four) people. Everyone in line was just getting food to go, so I joined the queue. I walked in, stood in line, and then made my order; "fish and chips, please". Fish and chips went in the fryer, and I started salivating at the thought of my first bite of authentic British fish and chips. When my order started to come up, I was quite confused. There is no way that much food was for a single order of fish and chips... but I was sadly mistaken. The portions here are absolutely gargantuan. Everything was fresh, piping hot, and delicious. I'm willing to book another trip back to England just so I could revisit this place!

Hostile service and horrible fish and chips. I sent back the fish and chips because they were…read moreinedible: heavy, greasy and flavorless. The chips were hard and saturated in oil, and the fish tasted and looked like a heavily battered brick, with a hardened crust resembling cornmeal in texture and color. Nothing was crispy or light about the dish. I was especially disappointed after having had a delicious version at the Globe Inn in Wells-next-the-Sea, with pillowy-soft interiors for the chips and shatteringly crisp breading around flavorful fish. The manager--a woman in her 50s with chin-length blonde hair--came out to berate me for sending back the dish. She said that several people had ordered it that night and loved it, and that she was going to charge me because "nothing was wrong" with it. Her manner was remarkably nasty and rude for a service professional. She said she couldn't allow people not to pay for meals based on their "subjective" opinions of the food, since she was "running a business." If I hadn't asked her to leave me in peace, stop haranguing me and stop creating a scene, she would have continued trying to fight with me over my decision to send back the dish. She also couldn't believe that I didn't want to take it home with me. Because of this, I couldn't order another dish: I didn't want to pay for two meals, one of which I couldn't continue eating after a few bites. My companion therefore had to eat her coq au vin dinner alone. The manager later came out to settle the bill and tried to hand the entire bill to my friend, perhaps because she wanted to avoid dealing with me. I had to make sure they hadn't charged us for service and asked to see the receipt before paying. After I did, she asked, "Is everything okay?!" in the same angry and resentful manner--even though she was charging me for a dish I had been unable to eat. On our way out, our original server gave us a strained smile while glaring at me. The atmosphere by then felt thoroughly hostile. Don't fall for the restaurant's "gastropub" identity. Its approach to customer service was petty and shockingly unprofessional. I have never been treated so aggressively and with such hostility at a restaurant merely for speaking up about food I found unsatisfactory.
