A great lookout point to see much of the Auckland Harbor in New Zealand, the Big Wheel is a landmark: a giant axel connecting two 8-ton cogwheels. It is from the steam ship "Whakarire", which was used for much of the 20th century to dredge the harbors of Wellington and Napier in New Zealand. It's a nice piece of history, not requiring any sort of maintenance. And the constant flow of visitors coming off of tour vans, was numerous signifying perhaps not looking for the axel itself but the outstanding views that were made possible by boats like these. read more
