The Big Sleep Out is a charity event run every year in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.
The idea is two-fold: to raise money for St Basils, the young person's homeless charity and secondly to raise awareness of the very real problems that the homeless face.
Groups of people, often from local companies or indeed individuals sleep rough through the night, albeit altogether, and ask friends, family and colleague's to sponsor their endeavours. This happens on cold winter nights near the Christmas period so it's particularly uncomfortable. However, the spirits are generally high as everyone is in it to raise awareness and money and more often than not, everyone goes for a big fry up come the morning. If it was me, I'd want a hot bath and warm bed but that just goes to show the spirit of the people that put themselves through this. read more
