Unfortunately, I don't have either, so I headed inside to see what other goodies were in store. Inside are tons of gift items as well as neat stuff for your home. It is full of "FUN STUFF" and a great place to find a unique gift for a hard to shop for friend/relative/etc. Personally, my favorite is the wall of novelty socks. I'm fairly certain I have purchased at least one pair every time I visit this shop; there are different socks each visit. I also started this "tradition" of picking out a silly dog (or cat) tag for my dog's collar each visit. My Angel Beagle, Sasha, had a great collection (for example "I look much better online" - even though she was adorable!), and my Roxy is starting on her collection ;) Looking around, it appears other customers have fun while in Fun Stuff. And they have awesome pink bags for your purchase. This store is seriously a highlight of each and every Door County adventure. Never stop being fun! :)

My daughter and I decided to use the time to browse at Skal, just two stores down the road. I later discovered, quite by accident, that Skal is also owned by the same people who run Al Johnson's! What a charming Scandinavian gift shop! Skal has a wonderful, thoughtfully curated collection of housewares, clothing, and accessories. There were so many unique and delightful items to browse, and we were especially drawn to the cute and whimsical merchandise. Although we spent only about 15 minutes there and didn't make any purchases, simply browsing through the shop made us happy. We returned to Al Johnson's in a good mood! I only wish I had more time to shop here. There are so many lovely and distinctive gift ideas that would make wonderful surprises for family and friends. Skal is definitely worth a visit when you are in Sister Bay!

Their selection is so vast, I could wander for hours and admire the wares. I had to pick up some Swedish Candy, of course, although the chocolates had to stay on the shelf due to the 100-degree heat outside. But Salty licorice and Bubs skulls came home with me. Delicious. I was most excited to find that they carry clothing. I bought a couple of dresses by Paapii, a Finnish brand. They make comfy dresses and tunics in all kinds of cute patterns. Everyone at the store was so friendly and willing to help out. The dressing room was occupied for a while, so they offered to let me try on my outfits in the ladies room instead. My haul ended up being quite pricey, but that is not Skal's fault. Their prices are rather reasonable in my opinion, I just...bought a lot of stuff. Be warned, you might too!

Recently we spent a few days in Door County enjoying the fall colors and sightseeing. We visited…read moreAl Johnson's Swedish Restaurant and Butik in Sister Bay, as it is such a popular spot for tourists. Their goats usually go onto the restaurant's sod roof at the start of the tourist season, in late May, continuing through mid-October. We visited on a chilly Fall day on October 22nd, the goats were no longer grazing on the roof. We did spot a couple of fake ones, though, so we got the idea! It was still fun to look at grass growing on the roof of all their buildings in the street. We arrived around 12:15 pm on Thursday, there were a lot of customers waiting around the entrance area. The cheerful hostess took my husband's name and gave us an estimated wait time of 30 minutes. My daughter went in their connected butik (boutique/gift shop) to browse, but then decided to visit their other gift shop down the street first. As soon as we returned in 20 minutes, we heard my husband's name being announced outside the door. So, the wait was not long. The restaurant has a lot of traditional Swedish décor. Even the waitresses wear traditional Swedish dresses. The atmosphere was fun and festive. Our server was friendly and attentive. The menu book was huge in size. The menu was extensive. I just followed our daughter to order a Swedish Pancake Special ($18.50), served with pancakes (with lingonberries, butter and syrup), two eggs over-medium and choice of ham, Canadian bacon, sausage or bacon. It ended up all 3 of us ordering the same things, with sausage as our choice, and we all had coffee ($3.75 each), making it very easy for our server, haha. I especially liked their sausages which were plump and juicy, light and not too salty. The Swedish pancakes were rectangular in shape and very thin, stacked in several layers, which were interesting to eat. The first bite of lingonberry jam seemed a little too tart for me, but my husband loved it and even asked for a second dish. I loved their coffee which was rich and good. Our server made sure that our cups were filled too. This was a good lunch even without goats on their roof. It's worth a trip to dine in Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant. We will definitely return if we visit Door County again.

This is probably the biggest tourist draw in Door County. We arrived at 8:30AM on a Friday and it…read morewas already a 30 minute wait, which we did. We sat outside and listened for our name to be called as we enjoyed the view of the water across the street. Name called, seated at a table in a full dining area, and we watched the staff do a very specific dance, each person with a clear responsibility to keep the customers happy and moving along quickly. One woman was obviously in charge and kept other staff on task very well. We ordered the Swedish Pancake Special with scrambled egges and sausages, which was done perfectly all across the plates. The Oatmeal was a large serving, with cream and brown sugar. The dish of lingonberries was nice for us to try as we wished. They do not have any specialty coffees, which was a surprise, but fine, considering there is a fantastic coffee shop next door. (See my review for Happy Coffee.). The biggest thing to note was how fast we were served our meals; from ordering to being served was no more than 5 minutes. And yet the food did not taste like quantity cooking, each dish tasting fresh and not reheated. If you are hoping for a slow and easy breakfast, go elsewhere. Al Johnson's wants the huge waiting list to move quickly, and you are encouraged to "keep 'er movin". The wait for a table was longer than the meal itself. When we left the line was even longer, and by 11:00 AM the outdoor areas of the restaurant were packed. Plan your day accordingly. Our two meals totaled $25 before tip. The servers work hard and quickly and deserve a nice tip. No goats on the roof, but that's OK. Just seeing grass up there is interesting, and I would rather they treat the goats well than worry about my entertainment.

Not only can you deck out any type of Christmas tree you wish to have, they had a whole section that was very specific to door County and specific locations that they hand paint in the store.
