Barrecode is one of my favorite studios to go to in the Madison area. With such variety, no two classes you take during the week are the same which keeps all the classes interesting and engaging! Studio and all the equipment is always clean, the barre room is really large, and there's always hair ties, dry shampoo, etc. if you need it. All the instructors are really friendly. Also the classes vary in time so you are are daring enough to do a double, they will be 2 different types of classes. During the class, the instructor is guiding you the whole time and coming around to check on form, which was extremely helpful for me when I first started doing barre. A lot of the positions aren't regularly done so form is important to get your best workout in. Even after class, I always appreciate the community Barrecode fosters through their social media, sending the message of encouragement and support to everyone no matter where they are in their fitness journey and taking these goals beyond their health to their everyday lives.

Let me start by saying I have NEVER taken a barre class before and was actually pretty nervous…read moreabout it. That all went away as soon as I got there. The ladies at check in did everything they could to make me feel comfortable & confident: showing me around, helping me grab the stuff I would need for class, and answering all my questions. The class I went to was a classic barre class, so there was a focus on core, glute stuff, some upper body stuff, then more legs. The music was upbeat, as was our instructor, and that helped keep me going for the 50 minutes. I was surprised how challenging these little moves could be and as I type this my right butt cheek is feeling it. I was also surprised to not be dripping sweat by the end. Anytime I run or spin, it looks like I just got out of the shower, so this was a pleasant surprise. However, I still appreciated that the lights were dimmed during class. I am not great at doing things in time like leg lifty things, so I appreciated being able to retreat to the shadows. At the end, a really friendly stranger (who clearly knew what she was doing because I noticed & envied her on-time leg lifts/lack of shaking legs) came up and said she'd only been there a few months but it gets easier. She also said that none of the classes she's been to have been the same, so it stays challenging/interesting. Overall, positive experience! I would especially recommend it if you were interested in starting barre classes, but didn't know where to start.

I asked if they were open because it felt really weird and uncomfortable and she said I'm just about to close up. It really isn't warm and welcoming from my first impression. I'll maybe get a pass instead to make sure it's not like what I just experienced.

New in Madison area and wanted to find a good studio to jumpstart. I've always preferred hot classes, Bikram style, like 105'F with 50%+ humidity. I'd love a good sweat and I found easier to relax and stretch in the heated environment. Learned there are 4 locations and Middleton was the one I attended. Initial impression was cute place with vibrant color. They offer showers and a waiting area to read/decompress with hot tea and filtered water. I signed up online and showed up for my 1st hot class. Parking wasn't hard and it was free. Walked upstairs and checked in at the counter. I saw members can get free towels; otherwise, it's $1 or $2 depending on the size. There were about 20 students in the class and I ended up towards the opposite side of the entrance which it isn't the best spot. I had a hard time hearing the instructor (no mic and loud music). Given it's my first class, I thought the instructor should ask who's there for the 1st time and if there were any injuries. No one asked so I just have to modify as needed due to my herniated spine. Given this is my 1st class in almost 2 years, I took it slowly and participated as much as I could which was still over 80% of the class time. I didn't sweat at all. The room was warm but definitely not hot or humid. My mat towel was dry which was different from all of my previous practices. I later found out the temperature was set to around 90'F and no one knows if a humidity level was turned on. I'm glad that I went as it was a good way to try out but I'll go back again to try a couple more classes before deciding if I want to be a member.

I've been a student here since January 2013 and became a volunteer instructor in August of 2013. Most, if not all, of the instructors here are volunteers. We all have "day jobs" but we love this place and owner Arielle so much that we teach classes in exchange for taking classes. Dance Life offers fitness classes such as Zumba, piyo, piloxing, Oula, dance classes like bellydance and ballet, and crossover classes like 'tone and tease' and burlesque fitness. The main entry has a cozy lobby space with overstuffed sofas, chairs, and decorative pillows where we all gather before classes begin. There is a changing area, two restrooms and a water dispenser in case you forgot your water bottle. Classes happen in either the large Sultana Studio or the smaller Peacock Studio. I'll post a photo of the wonderful peacock mural next time I'm at the studio. There is a small shop where you can stock up on bellydance hip scarves and other dance apparel. There is also a small practice studio that students can rent. In fact, when classes aren't in session the whole studio is available to rent! Parking spots are located along the walls of the building. It can get a little crowded on busy nights like special ladies nights events but it's usually not an issue. Come check it out, you just may find your home away from home.

I still have no rhythm, but the classes are welcoming and I feel comfortable stumbling along about a half beat behind the instructor. I've mostly stuck to the beginner belly dancing classes, but I've also made it out to ladies burlesque night and just recently to the chub club dance party kick-off. That last event was a ton of fun, and like all of dance life's classes was a great mix of ages, sizes, and dance experience. Once you attend your first class, the rest of your groupon classes never expire, so even if you can't make it out regularly it's still a good deal!
