Grand Hotel Beatrix

The Grand Hotel Beatrix is an older property. It needs an upgrade, but compared to most hotels in…read morethe area it's a real gem. The rooms are spacious and many have their own balcony. It has a terrific breakfast in the morning, with a nice choice of food and drinks. The breakfast server is extremely cheerful and friendly. The desk staff is helpful and friendly as well. The cleaning was okay but not what you normally expect in a Dutch hotel. Although you aren't supposed to smoke in the rooms, many guests appear to ignore this rule. My room smelled faintly of smoke. Many rooms offer a view of the sea. It is close to the town center in Huisduinen and a very short drive to the port of Den Helder. There are several places that offer horseback riding nearby and the hotel has an indoor pool and spa. The hotel has two restaurants, one on the main floor which is like a steakhouse and the second is a more formal restaurant. I ate only at the steakhouse and the food was good. The sea is directly across the street from the hotel. They don't have a beach here but a paved area and then a large grass berm. You can take the paved path or the dirt trail on top of the berm for miles. There is a light house just a short walk from the hotel. There is also one of the old forts which is now a museum and two additional restaurants both with nice views of the sea, especially at sunset, all within a short walk. If you need a place to stay in this part of the Netherlands, you can't go to far wrong with the Grand Hotel Beatrix.

The view from the room is excellent, and there is a view of a rook style tower from a balcony. There's also a McDonald's right around the corner for a late night snack, the train station is a block away, there is free Wi-Fi and free breakfast in the morning. The furniture is decent, it is mostly wood Decour and feels homey. It also has an LCD TV in it, about 20 -24 " with about 50-100 cable channels, no premium channels though. There is also a bar downstairs for a late night capper. Overall, the experiences are so joyful compared to the other place that I will come here again. There is also a heater in the room and it actually works and the door is pretty solid, even though I dislike their key system and hope they move to card keys sometime in the future. People at the front desk are really nice as well and will help you when you need it.

Hotel de Magneet
For us giving a hotel 5 stars is not about how fancy or "white glove" it is. Rather, we value the…read morecomfort, feel, affordability and authenticity of the experience. Hotel de Magneet offers all of these plus the location is kick-ass. We arrived off the street and asked for two rooms. The hotel was full. However, they were able to shuffle rooms for us and we ended up in the two bedroom apartment (penthouse suite). This is not a fancy joint but it is comfortable. Our suite was in a typical Dutch home loft with sloped skylit ceilings and a bit of a maze to find the second bedroom and a full kitchen....oh and the stairs.....only in The Netherlands. We ended up with a private balcony with a view of a canal and the grotekerk. The hotel is outside the high street and main square area but Hoorn is so small it doesn't make any difference. The harbor is only a few blocks away and parking here is a snap. We suspect what happened to us is not part of their daily routine but their effort to accommodate us was. We would definitely stay here again. PS The Apple Pie was wonderful.

It…read morecouldn't be fixed right away, and the hotel was completely booked so we couldn't change rooms. We got plenty of fans and a lot of empathy from the manager and the staff (which goes a long way). The next day, we got a new room with excellent AC a view of the ocean and the sound of ocean waves to fall to sleep with at night. In response to the first day's AC issue, we were comp'd breakfast for all six mornings we were there... and, since we're talking about breakfast, let me tell you it is awesome! The spread of fresh meat, cheeses, eggs, salad, and baked goods is on par with what you would find at a Four Seasons in the US (with less posh). Oh, and don't get me started on the coffee maker that pumps out espresso, coffee and cappuccino with a perfect top of crema every time! I kinda got addicted to it. They miss the 5 star rating from me for one reason though: we had a "queen" room and it was just two twin beds pushed together. They weren't the nice, comfy, foam mattresses that I usually find in Europe but the type with springs, and the springs were old and had seen better days. And, since its two beds pushed together, there's always an extremely uncomfortable gap in the middle so, cuddlers beware--you're gonna both have to cuddle on a twin bed or fall into the crack! It is the only reason (and a major reason) I might not choose to stay here again.
