The place itself is simple and very unpretentious, it offers a range of rooms and extras such as breakfast but on the whole there is nothing exceptional about the service. The problem I have with this place is that there always seems to be a number of people on the doorstep simply hanging around for large portions of the day which can be a bit unwelcoming if you are new to the city and looking for somewhere to stay. The prices here are reasonable and rates vary depending on the size of the room you order and the length of your stay. On the whole this place is small, simple and adequate enough but if you are after luxury then you should probably head somewhere else.

As of last Sunday 5/20/2017~ish, the new kitchen and breakfast room has been relocated to the old church chapel - it's awesome! So, the room I stayed in was in the "vestry" and was superb! All brand new, clean and cozy - the room was perfect! The ensuite bathroom was very nice (only needed some hand soap.) During my recent trip, I stayed twice, but a week apart...kinda coming and going. Both visits were stellar. Colin was extremely cool and accommodating (only met Monica briefly - she was quite friendly). On arrival the alarm bells rang and that was just looking at this place from the outside. I was greeted by the very pleasant John and shown to my room. Although clean enough, the room was in a really bad state of repair and the decor was extremely tired to say the least. When I go away, I expect a decent standard of accomodation and this fell way short. I was really annoyed as I had travelled a long way to get here. The Kirk Lea Guest House website is extremely misleading and there are lots of issues within the room I was due to stay in. The window would not close, there was a burn on the polystyrene light fitting and the floor was very uneven. The furniture was very worn and damaged and nothing matched at all, not an attempt to look "shabby chic" I can promise. There have been some attempts to decorate by the current staff who are well aware of the appearance of the place and were very apologetic when I approached them with my impression of the place. They were helpful and could not have done more to assist me in finding a suitable alternative. We stayed in the Gribin room (so called because it looks straight onto the mountain of the same name). The bed is huge and was amazingly comfortable and the shower is a proper shower and even changes colour whilst you're in it. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of food. We also walked over to Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall which is a great walk, a couple of hours each way with great views on a clear day and the waterfall itself is beautiful and theirs a tea shop at the base of the falls. Clutching leech-like to the corner of a building, the interior is little more than a corridor dominated by the slick, brass-tapped bar. Outside, there's a barrier separating the patrons from meandering shoppers, like zoo animals. Standing at a table with a cider on a sunny day becomes a bizarre but engrossing experience as people straining with carrier bags and prams shuffle past. You feel like you've simply stopped dead in a busy thoroughfare and in some ways you have. This is the kind of place you could walk into, get a drink and walk out of without breaking stride. Good for one though, provided you don't crack your scalp on the low toilet door. That's never an attractive thing to do in front of shoppers.

However this is a very friendly place despite what the pictures might suggest - the ridiculous number of England flags for the world cup make it look like a BNP social club but they are not a permananet feature, although having said that these things usually get left up until they have turned yellow and start to frey. Noty a great selection of beers, the theme is cheap and plentiful as the old fellas here will usually start at midday and go on drinking for ages which creates that strange, funny but baffling atmosphere you get with drunken old people. Friendly but you rarely know what the joke is - it's generally the young one.
