There are a few hitches - e.g. we had a Saniflow toilet in our room which made rude noises intermittently; and whoever has responsibility for putting up notices about the place is not a gifted speller - but frankly the warmth and genuine friendliness of the hosts more than made up for these small matters. What's more, I can't remember the last time I had such a fabulous cooked breakfast. Aah, the bacon! Ooh, the sausages! I would definitely return here. I wouldn't dream of bringing the kids though, as they would spoil the calm atmosphere and wouldn't appreciate the proper Welsh Breakfast like we did.

Beautiful interiors carefully restored and a real country house feel. An excellent menu and a reasonable wine list, great surroundings, friendly people and a lack of pretension made this a great day out for us on a sunny sunday. Well worth a visit but do book ahead. The terrible experience I had at Peterstone Court Hotel has been compounded by the shockingly poor customer service I have received since. Myself and a relative recently visited the hotel having been given half spa day packages as Christmas gifts. Firstly, hotel staff seemed unaware that a two course lunch was included in our package and when our food finally arrived my order was completely wrong. Both of these errors are forgivable and would be easily and happily forgotten if it was not for what followed when we went down to the hotel's spa. We were first left to wait for a long time before being greeted and provided with robes. The floor of the changing room was very dirty. We made use of the jacuzzi for around 40 minutes which was fine until we noticed that sediment had suddenly gathered beneath our feet. It felt like sand or salt and at first we weren't sure whether maybe it was supposed to be there. We then noticed that it was all over us and so we got out. We waited for the jacuzzi to stop so that we could see what it was and there was a large amount of dirty sediment that had settled at the bottom of the jacuzzi, as well as fragments floating in the water (see attached photo). We alerted the spa staff and the way it was handled was less than professional. It was treated with joviality; we were told not to use it any longer and that we would "probably best have a shower". We showered before going in for our aromatherapy massages - the relaxation element of which was marred by the yawning and suppressed giggling of the two therapists. One of the therapists also burst back into the room just minutes after leaving us to get changed "in our own time", saying she had forgotten we were there! They were clearly in a rush to pack up - we saw them leaving at 4.25pm despite the fact that our package was supposed to go on until 5pm (granted, once the Jacuzzi was off limits, there was not a lot to do)! I contacted the hotel asking for a refund as the services provided were of poor quality and not as advertised, the facilities were not fit for purpose, and the situation with the jacuzzi was frankly disgusting. The Hotel's General Manager, Helen, took over a week to respond to my complaint. She ignored several of our concerns and offered vouchers for a return to visit to the spa. I assured her that there are no circumstances under which I would wish to return to the spa. Refusing to make suitable recompense for our abysmal experience in her establishment, she stated that they "can't just hand out refunds to everyone who doesn't have a nice time". This made me wonder how many people fail to have a nice time at Peterstone Court Hotel! When I highlighted the seriousness and deep unpleasantness of the issue with the Jacuzzi, she assured me that the filter contents we had been bathing in would not pose a serious health risk as they would have been chemically treated. Unsurprisingly, this was of no great comfort! During this conversation, Helen also intimated that I was lying about the actions of the spa staff, and accused me of blackmail when I explained my intentions to share my experience should they not take responsibility for, and rectify, the terrible service they had thus far provided. My last contact with Helen was over a week ago, when she phoned on a Saturday evening. At her bequest, a meeting was set up for the following morning with Mr Glynn Bridgeman, one of the directors. I cancelled my Sunday plans so that I could attend, only to receive a phone call from a receptionist less than an hour before the meeting was due to take place saying they had been unable to contact Mr Bridgeman and would need to cancel. Astounding.

They've painted this a garish pink since many of the photos online were taken, which has the pub in a far more professional looking white. Let's start with the positive: inside, this place is really pretty. The layout allows for lots of little nooks and crannies, with the restaurant seating towards the back after a small but functional pub. Exposed brickwork and beams lend the venue a classy feel. The service was attentive and friendly and food came out quickly. Dishes seemed reasonably priced with a 10oz sirloin steak topping the menu at £18. Unfortunately, there's less positive news to report. Firstly, drinks are not offered as part of the table service. Neither are guests provided with a drinks menu or wine list (despite many being available behind the bar). Instead, guests are required to get up, go to the bar, order their own drinks and carry them to the table. That's despite our table being laid out with wine glasses (and glasses for water we were never offered or provided). The menu itself is extensive enough, however half way through our dinner we spotted a promotion for a dish that wasn't included. It turned out to be included on a specials list we weren't provided with but was scrawled on a specials board out of sight to more or less every table. Talking of the table, ours was sticky and needed a good wash. Once we ordered our starters we were actually asked if we would like clean cutlery for the next course. That's a first. The food itself was inadequate. Our steak was over cooked (medium rare was closer to well done) and the chicken coach tasted dry and I strongly suspected had been cooked from frozen. We left feeling this venue has bags of potential. It's appointed well but everything from our entrance went downhill (with the exception of a couple of delicious deserts). It needn't be that way. If they changed their silly drinks policy, provided a full menu, washed down the tables, gave a little more care to the food and generally extended the quality of the building to the experience of their guests, this would be at least a four star place to spend time.

Good comfortable inn on the edge of a small village in the eastern part of the National Park,…read moreconvenient for both the Black Mountains and the main peaks of the Brecon Beacons. The hotel has 10 ensuite bedrooms. We found the rooms clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious but perhaps in need of a little updating. There is not T.V. lounge or rooms solely for the use of hotel guests. However, this is perhaps compensated by a large and comfortable lounge bar. A large T.V. is at one end but this area is seperated off and thus is unobtrusive to those located in the main area. Rev. James and Hancocks H.B. on draft are the pick of the beers. Choice of lagers, wines etc also available. There is also a garden at the back of the hotel for warm and sunny weather. We booked in at the hotel on a half board basis for a whole week and during that time never had a disappointing meal. Good choice of food ranging from local sausages, salmon, half roast duck, crevettes and various steaks. Portions are generous to the point that you may wish to consider a 2 course meal instead of the normal three courses. The fixed price lunchtime menu is excellent value. If available, try the salmon with saffron sauce and Bacardi and Blueberry cheesecake. The website has sample menus. We found the staff friendly and efficient and would happily recommend this inn/hotel to others seeking a reasonably priced establishment in one of the most attractive parts of Wales.

The best place to start the walk is next to the Angel Inn at Pontneddfechan where there is a rocky path which leads you through the woods alongside the River Nedd Fechan. You will need to allow a good hour in both directions and the path is uneven and even dangerous when wet and slippery, so not suitable for everyone (there are several warning signs) and sturdy shoes are a must. You pass an old mill and the entrance to a disused silica mine. Further along, the Nedd Fechan and Pyrddin meet and the path now borders the Pyrddin. The first waterfall to see is the Sgwd Gwladys, a lovely sight. It's possible to climb behind the falls as well though I haven't done this myself! Further along you'll come to more waterfalls including the Horseshoe Falls and the Lower and Upper Ddwli Falls. There are lovely views everywhere of the falls and trees overhanging the river. Well worth a visit.
