This review is long. If you do not want to read the whole thing just read this: THE STAFF IS INCOMPETENT!
If you want to know why I say that:
If I could give this place a negative review I would. My experience here was so frustrating, and that frustration so easily avoidable that I was compelled to make a yelp account and write this review. This not a bookstore for anyone who is serious about reading. I went in the other week and was overwhelmed by how hot, stuffy, and sloppy the store was. I needed help finding a book but the store seemed to be deserted. I rang a bell at the counter and no one appeared. I yelled "hello? anyone here?" and finally an old lady who looks like a troll popped out from behind a bookcase. I think she was sleeping back there, was not wearing a mask, and had that crazy look in her eyes of someone not right in the head.
I should have known better than to ask this lady for help. If you've been here before you know the one I'm talking about! She has also been mentioned in other reviews stalking customers, yelling at customers for parking in the parking lot, harassing POC's in the store etc. I now add my voice to the chorus of complaints against the avid reader lady.
I told her I was looking for a copy of Welcome to the Monkey House. She then turned her back on me, went to a computer and after mistyping the title several times, finally managed to look up the book on amazon. She then pointed to the screen and asked me "is this the book you want?" I said "yes, Do you have it?" and she went to another computer, typed for a few seconds, got frustrated went back to the first computer, mistypes the title again on a different website, and finally said "It looks like its in our warehouse, not our secondary warehouse, but our one in Oregon, so we can get it for you in a week or two, or two days, by Tuesday."
Dear Avid Reader Lady, let me give yous some advice:
1. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE JOB or hide or whatever you were doing, customers need to see you and you need to see them. I could have stolen anything I wanted.
2. DO NOT SHOW YOUR CUSTOMER THAT THEY CAN GET THE ITEM ON AMAZON FASTER AND FOR LESS THAN YOU ARE CHARGING!
3. Is Welcome to the Monkey House that hard to type? Are you unfamiliar with this book? How could you work in a bookstore and not know Kurt Vonnegut?
4. It took you at least 15 minutes to tell me that you could order the book. That does not give me confidence. And when will it arrive, one week, two weeks, two days, Tuesday?
I asked her to clarify if it would take two weeks or two days, and she give me this very confusing convoluted explanation that was hard to follow. She said something about the president and covid and the postal service and multiple warehouses and how if its in Tennessee its two weeks and sometimes its less. And I was just like OK, you crazy.
I ordered the book on amazon while she was talking at me. But I asked her to order it just because I was curious to see how fast they could get it and she said I didn't have to pay until I picked it up. I never intended on picking it up. This was a test, and AVID READER FAILED!
I gave her my name and number. She said she would call me when the book arrived. Later that night I checked my voicemails and the lady had left me THREE VOICEMAILS!!!!!! Like why would you do that. Don't harass you customers. What's your problem?
I wish I could share the recordings here to warn ya'll away from this place. She may have a learning disability, so I shouldn't be mean. She should not be the only person in the store and she should not be calling people multiple times leaving crazy sounding messages.
Call one: She asks to confirm that my number is correct, and comments on the fact that my voicemail message does not state my name, asks that I call back to confirm this is indeed my number.
call two an hour later: She says the book is available in the first warehouse and she'll have it in two days, but that their are two different versions a special and a regular and that I should call back to let her know which one I want, and then repeats her criticism of my voicemail message, saying I should state my name so people know who they are calling.
But like, I gave you my name and number lady, you know who you are calling! wtf.
Call three twenty minutes later: She says she has the book, it was in the store the whole time.
I repeat: Welcome to the Monkey House was in the store the whole time. Thank you Avid Reader lady. Great f-ing job! You lost a sale and you lost a customer, and everyone should know that the people who work at this place don't know books and don't even know how to find books in their own store. Save yourself and shop online or go to another bookstore. This place sucks. read more
